Welcome to Tuesday Bluesday! Hear Our Blues Playlist, Our Album of The Week, and Winwood & Clapton Live Later, November 3, 2020

You won’t get any election updates from us. You’ll only hear music. Because here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio, we know what the only path is. In the meantime, we’ve got great music.

The House of Blues, New Orleans. One of my favorite places.

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up!

11:00 a.m. Something Old, New, Borrowed, Blues: Various Artists

The playlist created for Blues Week (September 2020) is now a permanent fixture here, and is actually being expanded for Open Stream days. You will hear Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Delbert McClinton, Little Walter, Slim Harpo, The Robert Cray Band, James Cotton, Koko Taylor, Long John Baldry, John Lee Hooker, Canned Heat and many more!

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Sweet Baby James by James Taylor

I remember seeing JT live several times, once was out at Tanglewood in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. When he sang

Now the first of December was covered with snow
So was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston
The Berkshires seemed dream-like on account of that frosting
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go…

Lyrics from Sweet Baby James

the crowd went insane. I have hundreds of musical memories like that. Thankfully.

7:00 p.m. Steve Winwood & Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden, New York

Two musical legends recorded live at Madison Square Garden during their performances in February of 2008.

Anyway. I have no idea what you’re waiting for, but hey, we’ve got time. I think. Hehehe.

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We are still getting our winter shit together, but we’re moving forward here with some great programming as it all falls into place!

James Taylor & Carole King working in studio.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Sweet Baby James by James Taylor NEW!

I remember when I first bought this album. I wore the damned thing out, I loved it so much. I still think it’s JT’s best damned album ever. It is our Album of The Week.

3:00 p.m. James Taylor & Carole King Live at The Troubadour NEW!

This was recorded in November 2007 at the Troubadour, where James Taylor and Carole King reunited on stage to celebrate the venue’s 50th anniversary. The two also originally performed at The Troubadour together in 1970.

6:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: Out In The Cold, Various Artists NEW!

We’re moving into winter, so it’s fitting that we have a brand new playlist about the weather, inclement and otherwise. Hear Neil Young, Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers, The Allman Brothers Band, Johnny Rivers, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and so many more!

This is the trifecta of music nirvana. We kick off a brand new month with all-new programming. This would be a most excellent day to tune us in. We’re still free. We’re also commercial-free. We’re outside this system.

Petty Month Draws to a Close With ‘Wildflowers’, We’re All Under The Influence, and Later Tonight: Live Dead, Saturday, October 31, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers. I trust your day will be a good one. Today we bid a fond farewell to another Petty Month. Hey, with any luck, we could be streaming from his birthday bash in Gainesville. Fingers crossed.

Today’s single Tom Petty offering is the All The Rest portion of the new Wildflowers project. These are the songs that would have made Tom’s double album had he released it back in 1994.

A fan’s fond farewell.

Here’s today’s line-up:

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wildflowers & All The Rest by Tom Petty FINAL AIRING!

Today’s Airing: All The Rest

These are the ten songs that would have been included on the ideal Wildflowers double album set. Congratulations to his bandmates, family and friends for making this happen.

The boxed set entered the Billboard 200 at number 5. The re-issue of the album Wildflowers has gone to number 1. There is no question that the world misses Tom Petty’s music.

Afternoon Open Stream, 26,000+ Songs, No Advertising, Totally Free

Listen for those Three-in-a-Row interludes throughout the day!

7:00 p.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Now, being under the influence doesn’t always mean it’s illegal, mind you. But more often than not, it does. Don’t lie because we’ve all been there.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Dillon Stadium, Hartford, Connecticut, July 31, 1974 NEW!

Another great outing by The Dead. No two shows ever the same, even on consecutive nights. The ultimate jam band.

So, will this be your lucky day? Or are you still lost in the ozone? Time will tell, won’t it?

Back To “Wildflowers & All The Rest” and The Ladies of The Mermaid Lounge Own The Evening, Thursday, October 29, 2020

Yes, it’s more streaming, some Wildflowers & All The Rest action as it is our Album of The Week, and we turn the stage over to the ladies later on.

Before we move along to the schedule, if you haven’t heard, the Wildflowers boxed set made its debut at no. 5 on the Billboard 200 it’s first week of release. If that isn’t enough, the original Wildflowers album was also re-released on October 16 and is currently at no. 1 on the rock charts. Think about that.

Maria Muldaur and Linda Ronstadt let it rip.

Here’s Thursday’s line-up:

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wildflowers & All The Rest by Tom Petty

Today’s Airing: Finding Wildflowers (Alternative Versions)

Tom Petty month is fast winding down, so we’re back to Wildflowers & All The Rest today. This is a great playlist that perfectly illustrates what a great band does on its journey to the final product. It’s a process.

Afternoon Open Streaming 26,000 songs without interruption.

Remember to listen for our new Three-in-a-Row feature throughout the afternoon!

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 2

We haven’t aired this one for a while: Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, Emmylou Harris, Etta James, The Two Janis’ Girls: Joplin and Ian, Laura Nyro, Joan Baez, Maria Muldaur and more!

We’re moving to our winter programming, whatever that turns out to be. We’re consistent, but not regimented. Our music selection remains as it always has. We’re free and we’ll stay that way. We respect your privacy and support your right to listen to free and open music without strings on your private information. We’re outside this system.

The Tom Petty Birthday Bash Continues, “Wildflowers & All The Rest” Remains Our AOW, Sunday October 25, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! The Tom Petty Birthday Bash continues on here in The Mermaid Lounge. Wildflowers & All The Rest will continue on as our Album of The Week as we celebrate Petty through Halloween.

Tom Petty’s Wildflowers & All The Rest remains the Album of The Week.

Here’s today’s Petty Party programming:

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wildflowers & All The Rest by Tom Petty NEW!

Today’s Airing: Finding Wildflowers (Alternative Versions)

Wildflowers & All The Rest remains our Album of The Week for one more week, and today we feature alternate versions. Most musicians don’t feel comfortable releasing this stuff. Tom Petty was one of those guys, from what I could ascertain. But I’m a fan of this stuff because it’s always great to see what a band goes through as it makes its way to the final version. In reality? All of these versions are great. Yes, they are different than the final version, but great nonetheless.

Next week, we’ve got some programming planned around alternate versions, and not just for Wildflowers.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty: Subdued NEW!

There is absolutely no question that Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are masterful rockers. But both Tom Petty and his band had a more subdued and reflective side. This is all tied up nicely here in this playlist. While it is over two hours of music (but who is counting), it’s nice to just put this on in the evening when I’m tired and sit in the dark. There is some very beautiful and powerful stuff here encompassing The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, and The Traveling Wilburys.

This would be a most excellent day to tune us in. Seriously. I’m a person of few words on musical arm-twisting scale today. It’s Sunday. A day of rest.

Welcome To The Petty Party! Today We Feature More Wildflowers, Streaming & Dreaming, and Live Dead Later, Saturday, October 24, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! The Petty Party starts today, with a morning and evening trip through Wildflowers & All The Rest. Some stuff you’ve not heard (at least here) yet. But hey, we’re keeping a balance. There’s other stuff too.

Petty. At home. On stage.

Here’s todays line-up!

11:00 a.m. Not The Album of The Week: Wildflowers by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

This is the new package version of Wildflowers. Tom Petty considered this the best thing that The Heartbreakers ever did. It was, technically, a solo album. Except the whole band was on it. So, it really wasn’t. But he did do somethings differently: Steve Ferrone and Rick Rubin among them. It’s a brilliant fucking album.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wildflowers & All The Rest by Tom Petty

Today’s Airing: All The Rest NEW!

Today’s offering is completely new: The songs that did not make the cut when Petty switched from a double disc to a single. Some of the songs here were used in the She’s The One soundtrack, but they were originally intended for Wildflowers.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! TO BE DETERMINED!

We will have our usual Live Dead offering tonight. We’re just not sure which one it will be yet! We will keep you posted right here a bit later.

In between, we’re streaming great music, giving you some LIVE DEAD, and tossing in the Three-in-a-Rows, so you really should join us. Know what I mean?

Petty Month Rocks On With Anthology & Wildflowers, while Linda Ronstadt & Her Friends Serenade Us, Friday, October 23, 2020

Good Morning, Music Mixologists! Petty Month is winding down on the calendar, but not here in The Mermaid Lounge. We are preparing for Petty’s Birthday Bash this weekend.

Linda Ronstadt & J.D. Souther on stage.

Here’s today’s line-up as we edge toward the weekend:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: The Live Anthology, Volumes 3 & 4

We wind down the week with The Live Anthology, released November 23, 2009. Up until that point in their brilliant 40-year run, these recordings represented the absolute best of The Heartbreakers live. So much has happened since then.

7:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt & Friends: Duets & More

Linda Ronstadt is another of those artists. She’s our favorite female in the house. In essence, our House Songstress. In spite of her incredible solo career, Linda Ronstad always preferred singing with others, and it shows on this playlist. She could sing with anyone, any time, anywhere, and sing any style.

10:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wildflowers & All The Rest by Tom Petty

Today’s Airing: The Home Demos

A little late-night airing of what we’ve been playing over the past couple of weeks. We’ll be hearing much more over the weekend.

We have visitors from Poland on for the first time today. In fact, they joined just before my bedtime and are still on this morning. We’re waiting on ya’ll in the U.S. to wake the fuck up.

We Set Up the Weekend Petty Party With a Trip Through Live Anthology, and Put Emmylou In The Spotlight, Thursday, October 22, 2020

And did we mention our new Three-in-a-Row feature here in The Mermaid Lounge? Listen for it throughout the day here as you enjoy our minimal-intervention format.

Emmylou Harris. What more needs to be said about this woman?

Here’s Thursday’s line-up!

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Emmylou Harris

I’m not sure what words can be used to describe Emmylou Harris’ brilliant musical journey. I can say this with a chuckle. I never paid any attention to country music on any level until I heard Elite Hotel. I remember distinctly saying to my oldest sister, “There’s something wrong with me. I’m suddenly into country music.”It was a great awakening, thanks to Emmylou. (But, oh, yeah: I’m not into the “bad pop bands with fiddles” as described by Tom Petty. He got the whole country thing.)

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: The Live Anthology Trip

This live release is amazing. You get to hear stuff you might not otherwise hear in a live format, and you get to hear one of the greatest cover bands as they shove all those classic rock n’ roll numbers into their live shows. Enjoy this as we prepare for Petty’s Birthday Bash this weekend.

I’m a person of few words this morning. I’m not going to bug you about tuning us in. No sir. Your loss. Know what I mean?

Pssssst…don’t forget to listen for those Three-in-a-Row moments!

Derek & The Dominos Live, Emmylou Harris Rarities, and A Repeat of Yesterday’s Live Wildflowers, Monday, October 19, 2020

Good Morning, Musicologists! Here’s today’s funky mix of music for your listening pleasure, including a repeat performance of yesterday’s unveiling of the live Wildflowers songs.

Eric Clapton during the Derek & The Dominos phase.

Here’s your week-opening line-up:

12:00 p.m. Derek & The Dominos Live at The Fillmore East, October 23 & 24, 1970

Derek & The Dominos, for those not in the know, is a British blues-rock band populated by Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle & Jim Gordon. Their live recordings come from two nights at The Fillmore East. If we were using the term ‘supergroup’ back in the day, this just might be one.

5:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris: Rare Tracks & Forgotten Gems

Here are some tunes you may have forgotten that Emmylou Harris did, some you didn’t know she did, and others she has done with her contemporaries. In short, it’s a great little playlist.

8:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wildflowers & All The Rest by Tom Petty REPLAY!

A replay of yesterday’s live versions of Wildflowers songs as chosen by Tom Petty’s family and bandmates. These may not be as much a revelation as the upcoming selections will be, but they certainly reflect a band at the top of its game and having a great fucking time on stage. And isn’t that why we love live music?

People, you need to get with the program. Seriously. We’re not going away, so you might as well just give in and pull up a tab. Because, hell, it doesn’t cost you anything and we run all day and night. We are your escape in the middle of this pestilence. Get your musical shit together.

“Wildflowers & All The Rest” Debuts, Johnny Rivers In The Spotlight, and Some Great Soul Later, Sunday, October 18, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers & Petty Fans Alike! We’ve got a great array of music on tap and — as you may have suspected — Wildflowers & All The Rest is our Album of The Week! It’s an amazing volume of work. I’ve already passed through once. The only question was how it would be presented.

We’ll do that in bursts, but we will have one airing in its complete form before the end of Tom Petty Month. We’ll also air the segments twice a week at various times.

Tom Petty in the studio during the recording of the original Wildflowers album.

Here’s your line up for Sunday Funday!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Wildflowers & All The Rest by Tom Petty NEW!

Today’s Airing: Live Wildflowers

There’s a ton of new material here. It’s a revelation about how the guy worked, how he worked with his band, and where he was at the time all of that great music made its way out. We’re starting with all the best damned live versions of Wildflower songs.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Johnny Rivers

Johnny Rivers, ,a favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge. One of the best damned singers, songwriters, and record producers many will probably never know. His style encompassed rockabilly, folk, blues, and good old time rock n’ roll. You might want to tune this in.

7:00 p.m. That Sweet Soul Sound: Various Artists

This is one sweet playlist with Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Fats Domino, Roberta Flack, Jackie Wilson, The Marvelettes, The Supremes, and many more.

So, it’s a day of rest. Give it a rest. Tune in. Turn on. Drop out. It’s the only way to unwind. We’ve got great music. And it’s all fucking free. You got a problem with that?
