Good Morning, Long Weekenders! We move into fall in style today with an appropriately-titled Album of The Week, and our infamous Original Sixties Rotation this afternoon and into the evening.

We’ve got the music that inspired the radio station today!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Harvest by Neil Young NEW!

This great piece of genius was Young’s fourth studio album, released in February of 1972. It featured the London Symphony Orchestra on two of the cuts, as well as guest singers Graham Nash, David Crosby, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, and Stephen Stills. It resulted in two singles, Old Man and Heart of Gold, which went to number one on Billboard. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor sang the backgrounds on Heart of Gold, one of my all-time favorite songs on the planet. It was the best-selling album of 1972, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015. Need I say more?

4:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This is one of the very first playlists we ever put together. Since we started, it has developed into an extended play event, covering more than five hours of songs by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, The Searchers, The Dave Clark Five, Fats Domino, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Simon & Garfunkel, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Lulu, The Who, Dusty Springfield, Peter & Gordon, Jefferson Airplane, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Petula Clark, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and more.

Saturday Delivers A Great New Playlist, NOT The Album of The Week, The Actual Album of The Week, and LIVE DEAD, September 4, 2021

Here we are with our usual frenetic Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge, and we wish you a great Good Morning. We’ve got some really cool stuff on tap, including a brand new playlist called Repeat After Me.

I was driving home from work when this idea came into my head and I wondered what the hell took me so long. I also have to tell you that I somehow feel this is simply the first volume. I thought of even more this morning. Here we have some great songs that have also been the beneficiaries of great remakes. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and that is certainly the case in the music world. The best want to remake and pay tribute to the best songwriters and performers who have inspired their own music.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Countdown to Ecstasy by Steely Dan FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of this great album. Get on it while you can. Tomorrow, we’ve got a brand new album to feature, and it’s one that just got its 50th Anniversary edition to boot!

7:00 p.m. NOT The Album of The Week: Surf N’ Burn by The Blue Stingrays

Last summer we added surf music to our repertoire, but we’ve not given it much of an audience this summer, regrettably I might add. As we work on the Labor Day Weekend, we’re going to play Surf N’ Burn by The Blue Stingrays. There’s a story behind this one. This band made one album, although the liner notes called them the premier surf music band of the sixties (when surf music first burst onto the music scene). The band is actually Mike Campbell and Ron Blair (of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers), and Randall Marsh (drummer for Mudcrutch, another Tom Petty band). The did this anonymously because they didn’t want to detract from The Heartbreakers meteoric rise of 1997, the year the album was released. They didn’t particularly care if it even sold a copy (which it did; I have one). They did it because they love the sound of surf music.

The album was just picked up and re-released a few weeks ago. If you are a lover of guitars (and of Mike Campbell, simply one of the best guitarists on the planet), then there’s something about surf guitar music that can’t be explained. Tune it in and see for yourself.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles, California, July 1, 1973

This is one of the few repeat performances we’ve played since starting LIVE DEAD three years ago, but it also hasn’t been aired since 2019. It’ll be like new, just like every live performance The Dead has done. We have several brand new never-before-played concerts in the bucket. We just need to get them ready.

Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge is pretty busy, and this one is no different. Give us a shot. We’ve got listeners from all over this morning, including Italy, Israel, Denmark, Sweden, the UK, France, Germany, The Russian Federation, Romania, Spain and even The Republic of Korea. Good Morning, Music People! It’s the end of the work week again (thankfully) and we’ve got some really great stuff coming your way from The Mermaid Lounge today!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Badfinger Live at The BBC (1972-1973)

We consider Badfinger a highly underrated band. They were pioneers in the ‘power pop’ genre, and were the one bona fide band with real star power signed by The Beatles’ Apple Records. They are the architects of one of my favorite songs of all time, Baby Blue. I remember binge watching Breaking Bad and when they closed the series with that song, I thought it was the perfect choice. Today we have them live at the BBC.

3:00 p.m. Acid: The Lost Cream Tapes

In the middle of the afternoon, we’ve got some great “lost” music that was just released to the public in this decade but was actually recorded back in 1967. This selection is pretty much all over the place with some unreleased music, some great studio jams (which we can only describe as hooch induced at this point), and even a couple of commercial recordings for Falstaff beer. Is that shit even still around?

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 5: Various Artists

As you well know, we have a particular commitment to the women of popular music, and we continue that tradition today with volume five of our All-Girl Revue. In this volume you’ll hear Joni Mitchell, Lulu, Petula Clark, Chi Coltrane, Janis Joplin, Tracy Chapman, Maria Muldaur, Karla Bonoff, Marcia Ball, Wendy Waldman, Valerie Carter, Judy Collins, Aretha Franklin, Carlene Carter, and many more!

Here in Boston, we have two formidable bands in rock music history: The J. Geils Band and Aerosmith. I have always preferred The J. Geils Band myself, perhaps because their roots are more seated in R & B, but also because they were more versatile. (Also because Steven Tyler is a horse’s ass, but that’s another story.) Today we put J. Geils In the Spotlight.

3:00 p.m. Little Feat Live at The Rainbow Theatre, London, UK, August 4, 1977

Another Mermaid Lounge favorite here, Little Feat. This was one sweet band, and their songs were the favorites of many a performer, including Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt. In fact, Bill Payne, the piano player for Little Feat was also Bonnie’s piano player on many tours. It was also rumored that Lowell George was madly in love with Linda Ronstadt. But I digress because I love musical trivia. At any rate, I think of all the bands who lived beyond their leaders’ death, Little Feat was the most formidable. But still, the Lowell George version of Little Feat could not be touched.

7:00 p.m. George Harrison with Eric Clapton & His Band Live at the International Exhibition Centre, Nagoya, Japan, December 5, 1991

Two great friends perform live together. As it turns out, the road-resistant George Harrison only played two live stints during his solo career. This turned out to be his second, and final, live performance.
