It’s Sunday Funday Here in the Lounge, and We Have Our New Album of The Week, and The Original Sixties Rotation For Your Listening Pleasure, September 5, 2021

Good Morning, Long Weekenders! We move into fall in style today with an appropriately-titled Album of The Week, and our infamous Original Sixties Rotation this afternoon and into the evening.

We’ve got the music that inspired the radio station today!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Harvest by Neil Young NEW!

This great piece of genius was Young’s fourth studio album, released in February of 1972. It featured the London Symphony Orchestra on two of the cuts, as well as guest singers Graham Nash, David Crosby, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, and Stephen Stills. It resulted in two singles, Old Man and Heart of Gold, which went to number one on Billboard. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor sang the backgrounds on Heart of Gold, one of my all-time favorite songs on the planet. It was the best-selling album of 1972, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015. Need I say more?

4:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This is one of the very first playlists we ever put together. Since we started, it has developed into an extended play event, covering more than five hours of songs by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, The Searchers, The Dave Clark Five, Fats Domino, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Simon & Garfunkel, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Lulu, The Who, Dusty Springfield, Peter & Gordon, Jefferson Airplane, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Petula Clark, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and more.

What more could you ask for on this fine day? Oh, yeah, did I mention that we are completely free? No subscription, credit card, or personal information required to tune us in. We don’t buy from either Apple or Amazon, and we accept no advertising. That’s a bonus.

Saturday Delivers A Great New Playlist, NOT The Album of The Week, The Actual Album of The Week, and LIVE DEAD, September 4, 2021

Here we are with our usual frenetic Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge, and we wish you a great Good Morning. We’ve got some really cool stuff on tap, including a brand new playlist called Repeat After Me.

Today we’ve got a great new playlist of remakes and reboots along with the originals!

Here’s your Saturday line-up!

11:00 a.m. Repeat After Me: Various Artists NEW!

I was driving home from work when this idea came into my head and I wondered what the hell took me so long. I also have to tell you that I somehow feel this is simply the first volume. I thought of even more this morning. Here we have some great songs that have also been the beneficiaries of great remakes. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and that is certainly the case in the music world. The best want to remake and pay tribute to the best songwriters and performers who have inspired their own music.

The playlist for this volume will be in the blog under the “Playlist” tab. Just click on it and scroll to the bottom.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Countdown to Ecstasy by Steely Dan FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of this great album. Get on it while you can. Tomorrow, we’ve got a brand new album to feature, and it’s one that just got its 50th Anniversary edition to boot!

7:00 p.m. NOT The Album of The Week: Surf N’ Burn by The Blue Stingrays

Last summer we added surf music to our repertoire, but we’ve not given it much of an audience this summer, regrettably I might add. As we work on the Labor Day Weekend, we’re going to play Surf N’ Burn by The Blue Stingrays. There’s a story behind this one. This band made one album, although the liner notes called them the premier surf music band of the sixties (when surf music first burst onto the music scene). The band is actually Mike Campbell and Ron Blair (of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers), and Randall Marsh (drummer for Mudcrutch, another Tom Petty band). The did this anonymously because they didn’t want to detract from The Heartbreakers meteoric rise of 1997, the year the album was released. They didn’t particularly care if it even sold a copy (which it did; I have one). They did it because they love the sound of surf music.

The album was just picked up and re-released a few weeks ago. If you are a lover of guitars (and of Mike Campbell, simply one of the best guitarists on the planet), then there’s something about surf guitar music that can’t be explained. Tune it in and see for yourself.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles, California, July 1, 1973

This is one of the few repeat performances we’ve played since starting LIVE DEAD three years ago, but it also hasn’t been aired since 2019. It’ll be like new, just like every live performance The Dead has done. We have several brand new never-before-played concerts in the bucket. We just need to get them ready.

Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge is pretty busy, and this one is no different. Give us a shot. We’ve got listeners from all over this morning, including Italy, Israel, Denmark, Sweden, the UK, France, Germany, The Russian Federation, Romania, Spain and even The Republic of Korea. We’re sitting here waiting on the U.S. (although we do have someone from North Carolina and someone from Texas this morning). Tune us in. Get with the damned program.

We Close The Work Week (Thankfully) With Badfinger, Cream, and a Dose of The All-Girl Revue, Friday, September 3, 2021

Good Morning, Music People! It’s the end of the work week again (thankfully) and we’ve got some really great stuff coming your way from The Mermaid Lounge today!

The women of rock n’ roll bring up the rear this evening

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Badfinger Live at The BBC (1972-1973)

We consider Badfinger a highly underrated band. They were pioneers in the ‘power pop’ genre, and were the one bona fide band with real star power signed by The Beatles’ Apple Records. They are the architects of one of my favorite songs of all time, Baby Blue. I remember binge watching Breaking Bad and when they closed the series with that song, I thought it was the perfect choice. Today we have them live at the BBC.

3:00 p.m. Acid: The Lost Cream Tapes

In the middle of the afternoon, we’ve got some great “lost” music that was just released to the public in this decade but was actually recorded back in 1967. This selection is pretty much all over the place with some unreleased music, some great studio jams (which we can only describe as hooch induced at this point), and even a couple of commercial recordings for Falstaff beer. Is that shit even still around?

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 5: Various Artists

As you well know, we have a particular commitment to the women of popular music, and we continue that tradition today with volume five of our All-Girl Revue. In this volume you’ll hear Joni Mitchell, Lulu, Petula Clark, Chi Coltrane, Janis Joplin, Tracy Chapman, Maria Muldaur, Karla Bonoff, Marcia Ball, Wendy Waldman, Valerie Carter, Judy Collins, Aretha Franklin, Carlene Carter, and many more!

Come on, kids. Get with the program. We have listeners from all around the globe online with us every single day. It’s time to join the party, and it won’t cost you a penny. What the hell are you waiting for?

The Operative Phrase is “New Content” Today With Nina Simone In the Spotlight, and Our Brand New ‘Paint It Black’ Playlist, Thursday, September 2, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! Well, it’s downright cold here today and I’m loving the break from tropical Massachusetts. To top it off, we’ve got brand new stuff for you today.

Today we put Nina Simone, singer, songwriter, musician, arranger, and activist, In the Spotlight

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Nina Simone NEW!

This has been a very long time coming, and we are so glad it’s finally come to fruition. Nina Simone had a very long and illustrious career. She was a singer, songwriter, musician, arranger and a social activist during her lifetime. Her musical styles covered and blended jazz, classical, gospel, R & B, pop, folk, and blues. Enjoy.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Countdown to Ecstasy by Steely Dan

We’re winding down on this great album. We’ve got one more airing on Saturday before we choose a new album for Sunday’s airing.

7:00 p.m. Paint It Black: Various Artists NEW!

This is our brand new playlist and it features the word “black” in the Title, the lyrics, or both. You’ll hear The Kinks, Tim Hardin, Rosanne Cash, Johnny Cash, Dr. John, Fairport Convention, The Grateful Dead, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones (of course), The Flying Burrito Brothers, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jackson Browne, Taj Mahal, Laura Nyro, Linda Ronstadt, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Tom Rush, Steely Dan, Three Dog Night, The Hollies, Warren Zevon, The Band, and many more!

By the way, this new set list is up on the blog under the Playlist tab. Simply go there and scroll to the bottom!

It’s a new season outside and inside The Mermaid Lounge. We’ll be adding some new features, new music, new playlists, and Trifectas. We hope to utilize the blog more than we are right now, and we can be followed on Facebook at @BecomeUngovernable Radio and Della Piana’s Ungovernable Music Emporium and Museum, and on Twitter at https://twitter.com/UngovernRadio2.

We Kick Off a New Month With Jimi Hendrix Live, Some Afternoon Trifectas, and The Temptations In the Spotlight Later, Wednesday, September 1, 2021

It’s September here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we are kicking off the month in style. We’ve got a great live Hendrix and friends performance from 1968, we spotlight The Temptations later, and we toss in some Trifectas during our afternoon Open Stream.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Jimi Hendrix Jams With Elvin Bishop, Harvey Brooks, and Paul Butterfield, Live at The Cafe Au Go Go, New York, March 17, 1968

Jimi Hendrix jams with several of his friends on stage at the famed Cafe Au Go Go in New York. Not to be missed.

Afternoon Open Stream with Hourly Trifectas NEW!

The Trifectas are pretty popular right now, so we’re riding the wave today with four new selections:

3:00 p.m. The Beatles

4:00 p.m. The Rascals

5:00 p.m. Carly Simon

6:00 p.m. Stevie Wonder

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Temptations

We close the programming today with the legendary Temptations who helped to pioneer the Motown sound.

As always, it’s a great day to join our growing worldwide community and tune us in. We run 24/7 so we can accommodate everyone’s best listening times. Some of our listeners start tuning in at 3:00 a.m., depending upon where they are in the world. Already this morning, we have listeners from the UK, Spain, Italy, Israel, France, and the Faroe Islands. Give us a shot.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With The Second Half of Our Allman Brothers Extravaganza, Stevie Ray Vaughan In the Spotlight, and Our Album of The Week Sandwich, August 31, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! Welcome back to another Tuesday Bluesday here in The Mermaid Lounge. We’ve got the second half of our Allman Brothers blues extravaganza today, and some SRV a bit later.

We’ve got Stevie Ray Vaughan In the Spotlight a bit later

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

10:00 a.m. Martin Scorcese Presents The Blues: The Allman Brothers Band NEW!

This is the second half of what we began last week. We start an hour earlier today because it’s a bit longer than the first set. Essentially, we have round two of the brothers playing traditional blues songs. It’s a treat. Don’t miss it.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Countdown to Ecstasy by Steely Dan

The second airing of this great album. We inject a bit of good old rock n’ roll (with a hint of jazz, of course) in the middle of all those blues.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Stevie Ray Vaughan

Generations of guitar-loving kids are still discovering the magic of this guy. He has been described as a man of simple taste with impeccable style. We cover his music from both his time with Double Trouble and as a solo artist.

It goes without saying that before, in between, and after, we have open stream as determined by The Music Mermaid. She also has simple taste but impeccable style. We run 24/7 completely free of charge. All you need to do is pull up a computer tab. (Oh yeah, you can also tune us in on your phone.)

Monday Rears Its Ugly Head Again, But We’ve Got Your Musical Back Here In The Mermaid Lounge, August 30, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! I have never liked Mondays. When I worked in corporate America, we used to call it Moan-Day. Now I have Monday’s off from retail hell, which makes it easier for me to acclimate when I get back there. Today, we’ve got great music for you to start your work week. I hope this helps.

Today, we’ve got George Harrison and Eric Clapton live in Nagoya, Japan

Here’s your musical line-up:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The J. Geils Band

Here in Boston, we have two formidable bands in rock music history: The J. Geils Band and Aerosmith. I have always preferred The J. Geils Band myself, perhaps because their roots are more seated in R & B, but also because they were more versatile. (Also because Steven Tyler is a horse’s ass, but that’s another story.) Today we put J. Geils In the Spotlight.

3:00 p.m. Little Feat Live at The Rainbow Theatre, London, UK, August 4, 1977

Another Mermaid Lounge favorite here, Little Feat. This was one sweet band, and their songs were the favorites of many a performer, including Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt. In fact, Bill Payne, the piano player for Little Feat was also Bonnie’s piano player on many tours. It was also rumored that Lowell George was madly in love with Linda Ronstadt. But I digress because I love musical trivia. At any rate, I think of all the bands who lived beyond their leaders’ death, Little Feat was the most formidable. But still, the Lowell George version of Little Feat could not be touched.

7:00 p.m. George Harrison with Eric Clapton & His Band Live at the International Exhibition Centre, Nagoya, Japan, December 5, 1991

Two great friends perform live together. As it turns out, the road-resistant George Harrison only played two live stints during his solo career. This turned out to be his second, and final, live performance.

Give us a shot, folks. We’re totally free. Personally, I hate it when I have to fill out a bunch of information before I can access something on the web. That’s not us. You don’t need to give us anything, frankly. All you need to do is pull up a tab and click the link below.

It’s Another Sunday Funday Here With “Folk Music From A-to-Z” and Steely Dan With Our Album of The Week, August 29, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We have another great Sunday lined up here in The Mermaid Lounge with our folk music extended playlist, and Steely Dan owns our new featured album.

You’ll be hearing Peter, Paul & Mary later during our Folk Music From A-To-Z extended playlist

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Countdown to Ecstasy by Steely Dan NEW!

Here in The Mermaid Lounge, we don’t care much about whether or not an album has generated “hits” or not. (Although we actually consider several songs on this masterpiece actual hit material.) What we care about is music, and this is a great album. And that’s why it’s this week’s Album of The Week.

3:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

It’s that time of the month again when we break out the folk music archives. You’ll hear John Prine, Tom Rush, Woody Guthrie, Odetta, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul & Mary, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Linda Ronstadt, Eric Andersen, Jesse Winchester, Cat Stevens, Phil Ochs, Nanci Griffith and many more!

It’s Sunday and that means it’s the Official Day of Rest. So give it a rest and tune us in. We’re 100% free 24/7 with no interruptions from those pesky advertisers. And we never ask for your credit card or personal info.
