It’s A Mudcrutch Monday, We Have That Sweet Soul Sound, and Gram Parsons In The Spotlight Later, February 15, 2021

Good Monday Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve got a great line-up today with another Mudcruch Monday, then we toss in a great soul music playlist and Gram Parsons in the early evening.

Mudcrutch. The band that left Gainesville, Florida and morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. They didn’t hit it big the first time around, but when Petty got them back together in 2008, they certainly did!

We’ve got just over two hours of great Mudcrutch music for you today. Not only do we have the absolute best live version of Hungry No More recorded at Boston’s House of Blues in 2016, but the original version of Don’t Do Me Like That. Yes, it was originally a Mudcrutch song.

Mudcrutch was the band that left Gainesville with Tom Petty as he set out on his musical journey. The band would not catch on, but it did morph into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Later, Petty would bring the band back together and this time, their fortunes were very different.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday! We Have The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Live at Boston’s Unicorn Coffee House, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing The Blues, and Dylan’s AOW, January 19, 2021

Good Morning, Blues Lovers! It’s another Tuesday Bluesday here in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got a pretty damned good line-up for today.

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Live at The Unicorn Coffee House, Boston, Spring 1966

We go back to 1966 here for one of the best in he business live in Boston at the old Unicorn Coffee House. No alcohol. Coffee and music provided the fuel. Tom Rush recorded his first album here. Only 600 copies were pressed. Others who sang here were Bonnie Raitt, the J. Geils Band, Bonnie Raitt, Phil Ochs, and Tim Hardin. The Unicorn was owned by George Papadopoulous, who also owned the Psychedelic Supermarket, which was across the street from what is now the Hynes Convention Center. Boston has a long history of great small music venues. You can read about Unicorn and the others a bit here.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Rough and Rowdy Ways by Bob Dylan

This is the first album of original Dylan music since 2012’s Tempest, and it is well worth a listen. The guy never ceases to amaze.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing The Blues

Tom Petty once said he envisioned the Heartbreakers as old men sitting in chairs playing and singing the blues together. I would have loved the opportunity to hear that. You’ll see why if you tune in this playlist tonight.

What in Buddha’s name are y’all waiting for? Europe and Asia are tuned in. America is, as usual, behind the curve.

This is the band that Tom Petty left Gainesville with all those years ago. In fact, the original Don’t Do Me Like That was a Mudcrutch song. Mudcrutch didn’t pan out back then, but it morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Then, in 2008, Tom Petty brought the original Mudcrutch back, and it was a whole new ballgame. We have their entire catalogue here this morning. You’ll want to hear this.

5:00 p.m. Goin’ Home, A Tribute to Fats Domino: Various Artists

There is no denying Antoine ‘Fats’ Domino’s place in the annals of rock n’ roll music. I’m not sure anybody was actually playing it before he was. This is truly an all-star tribute, featuring Art Neville, John Lennon, Lucinda Williams, Norah Jones, Tom Petty, Robbie Robertson, Toots & The Maytalls, Irma Thomas & Marcia Ball, Bonnie Raitt, Paul McCartney, Allen Toussaint and more!

9:00 p.m. The Shadow: 07 League of Terror NEW!

Not only do we have Orson Welles in this episode, but Agnes Moorehead, as they take down a counterfeit ring that is preying on the poor. (Frankly, sounds like the government.)

It’s Sunday and Linda Ronstadt Owns Our Album of The Week, We Have Chosen Petty’s Top 50 Songs, and Truffle Brings Up The Rear With a Great Live Performance, January 10, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We have a great line-up for you today, including our new Album of The Week and our first attempt to list Tom Petty’s Top 50 songs.

Tom Petty’s music will stand the test of time.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: We Ran by Linda Ronstadt NEW!

By 1998, when this album was released, Linda Ronstadt was an accomplished veteran of the music scene, and certainly a pioneer for all women in the male-oriented rock world who had more than made her mark. As such, she was at the stage of her career where she could make anything she wanted. And she did. This was effectively her final rock n’ roll album, interpreting songs by the likes of Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Bruce Springsteen, and Naomi Neville. Neville’s Ruler of My Heart and Hiatt’s We Ran were the hooks for me.

As for the musicians who contributed to this album? They were the best of the best: Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench of The Heartbreakers, Bernie Leadon (formerly of The Eagles), drummer Russ Kunkel, and guitarists Andy Fairweather Low, Waddy Wachtel, and Bob Glaub.

This is probably her most eclectic album ever, and one of my favorites.

2:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: Tom Petty’s Top 50 Songs NEW!

Someone sent me an email about two months ago challenging me to do this, so I finally found some time to make it happen. This includes Petty’s solo work, and his work with The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, and The Traveling Wilburys. It’s my Top 50. For now. This is subject to change without notice, by the way.

We are giving some airtime here to a great local band whose music embodies everything we play here on #BecomeUngovernable Radio. In case you missed this airing the first time around, we are rerunning it this evening, and we will be adding their collection to our standard rotation over the next few weeks.

Who the hell knows what it takes to get people to tune in. At least here in America, where they appear to be a bit slow on the uptake on many issues. Perhaps they prefer endless talk, commercials or paying for what they used to get for free (shades of Tom Petty’s The Last DJ. Hey, Hey, Hey).

Tom Rush is a favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge and across New England. This is a compilation of two shows recorded at Boston’s Symphony Hall early in his career.

Nope. This isn’t other people covering Tom Petty. This is Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers covering their influencers. The same qualities that make them the best American rock n’ roll band make them arguably, the greatest cover band of all time.

8:00 p.m. The Beatles Complete Apple Rooftop Concert

One day, the Fab Four decided to go out and give a concert at lunch on the top of Apple Records headquarters on Saville Row. Needless to say, all hell broke loose, and it took the British Bobbies a bit of time to figure out just exactly what the hell was going on. This is that impromptu concert in its entirety.

This is the final airing of this week’s episode. We’ll have a brand new one on Monday.

One day, Bob Dylan asked Tom Petty to go on tour with him. There’s a reason why all these guys wanted The Heartbreakers around. You’re about to find out just exactly why. In return, all of the members of The Heartbreakers credit Dylan with teaching them the importance of adjusting plans, songs, and being more spontaneous on stage. It was a marriage made in music heaven.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Moondog Matinee by The Band

I could go on and on about The Band, undoubtedly one of the great treasures in American popular music. They may have started as Dylan’s back-up band, but they carved their own very real place in music history.

Harrison & Clapton Live From Japan, It’s Mudcrutch Monday and They’re Live From Hollywood, and Episode 3 of The Shadow, Monday, December 14, 2020

Good Morning, Music Addicts! We’ve got some great stuff planned for today, including two live events. This is Mudcrutch Monday, by the way, and we’ve got live music from their 2016 tour!

Eric Clapton persuaded George Harrison to tour with he and his band in Japan after a 17-year hiatus. We have the music.

Here’s today’s line-up!

11:00 a.m. George Harrison & Eric Clapton Live in Nagoya, Japan 1991

George Harrison was persuaded by Eric Clapton to return to touring after 17 years away from the road. This music is from their 12-date Japan tour in 1991. All of the songs were recorded on December 2 and 5.

It should be noted that the drummer on this tour was none other than Steve Ferrone, who would go on to spend 25 years as drummer for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

4:00 p.m. It’s Mudcrutch Monday! Mudcrutch Live at The Fonda Theatre, Hollywood, June 26, 2016

This is a great bootleg of Mudcrutch’s performance at the Fonda Theatre during their 2016 tour. Stephen Stills turned out to be a surprise special guest at this show. This is one of my deepest regrets in life now that Tom Petty is gone: Missing the 2016 show in Boston where Mudcrutch blew the roof off the House of Blues (according to a friend in attendance), and recorded the definitive version of the great song, Hungry No More. I may never recover.

8:00 p.m. The Shadow: 03 Death From The Deep NEW!

Who has been sinking all of these ships of many country origins, of various sizes and with various functions? I’ll be damned if I’m going to tell you. You will have to listen to see what The Shadow knows.
