11:00 a.m. The Blues Project Reunion in Central Park, New York, October 24, 1973

This reunion, recorded at the Schaefer Festival in 1973 is amazing, in light of their nasty break-up six years prior. The band that helped pioneer blues-rock included Andy Kulberg, Roy Blumenfeld, the great Al Kooper, Steve Katz and Danny Kalb. They were all on the same page for this one and, if there was any acrimony remaining, it certainly didn’t show.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Their Satanic Majesties Request by The Rolling Stones

We interrupt our blues programming for a bit of psychedelia from The Stones with the second airing of our Album of The Week. Funny thing is, the Rolling Stones are steeped in the blues, so there is a symmetry here.

Koko Taylor’s raw, powerful voice led to her title as Queen of The Blues. Koko was no delicate flower; she was a kic-ass, take-no-prisoners blues vocalist with attitude. And we love her in The Mermaid Lounge and give her the spotlight treatment today.

There’s nothing like Tuesday Bluesday to cut your teeth on a great radio station. We don’t infect the airwaves with commercial advertising or mouthy D.J.’s who like to talk through the first minute of every damned song. We go for round two airing of this week’s featured album by The Zombies as we toss in a bit of psychedelia for the afternoon. As we said in our blog post on Sunday, it took nearly half a century for this album to be fully appreciated. (But not by me.)

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing the Blues

Tom Petty said he once envisioned his main band growing old together and sitting around in chairs playing the blues together. He never quite got there, unfortunately for all of us. However, he and the boys did sing some great blues together during their 40-year run, and we’ve got those songs here for you this evening as we continue on with Tom Petty month.

We close out today’s Tuesday Bluesday programming with a guy who left us much too soon. Stevie Ray Vaughan was, without a doubt, one of the greatest masters of blues guitar and one dominant presence on stage. See for yourself tonight.

Tuesday Bluesday generally brings out a lot of listeners, but we’re not concerned with numbers here because this is a labor of musical love. We here in the lounge consider Taj Mahal a national treasure. I’ll never forget my 2014 trip to New Orleans and the photo I took of a great Taj Mahal mural in the box office at the House of Blues. But I digress. Taj Mahal is not only a great bluesman, but he’s a multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, piano, banjo, harmonica and a bunch of other instruments. He has been instrumental in expanding the scope of the blues by incorporating elements of world music in his creative efforts.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Sunshine Superman by Donovan

The only break in our blues programming comes mid-afternoon when we take a short trip to the land of psychedelic music with Donovan’s Sunshine Superman, our Album of The Week.

7:00 p.m. Rick Danko & Paul Butterfield Live at The Blue Note, Boulder, CO, December 13, 1979

After The Band was no more, Rick Danko teamed up with Paul Butterfield and toured as the blues-rock Danko/Butterfield Band. They went on the road together, and this performance is from The Blue Note in Boulder.

7:00 p.m. Johnny Winter Live at The Bottom Line, New York City, NY, September 5, 1978

One of the best bluesmen of all time here, albeit a bit overlooked at times. Winter was not only a great blues guitarist and singer, known for his high-energy blues albums and live performances in the late 60s and 70s, but he also produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for the great Muddy Waters.

9:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Electric Music for The Mind and Body, Country Joe & The Fish

We close out the day’s programming outside the realm of the blues with one of the first psychedelic albums to come out of San Francisco.

Another great live performance where the date is not readily apparent, but no matter. We have a few of those and we keep looking knowing that we’ll find it…someday. Peter Green was a fine bluesman, and the very first leader of Fleetwood Mac, which was originally a blues band before turning mainstream pop. Today we have Peter Green’s Splinter Group live from Germany for your listening pleasure.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: First Take by Roberta Flack

At mid-afternoon we give you the second airing of Roberta Flack’s debut album, and a fine one it is. This album is considered by many to be one of the best R & B releases in popular music history, and for good reason. She doesn’t shy away from issues like racism either.

7:00 p.m. The Jeff Beck Group Live From The Boston Tea Party, Boston, MA, May 6, 1969

We go back in time to a legendary venue in the Boston area with a great blues-rock band for our programming finale tonight. We’ve aired this one before, but it’s been a few minutes, as they say. You’ll love this one!

This is one of those mystery date performances. I’ve been looking around for the actual date since we uploaded the music five years ago. Nobody seems to have it. But hell, we know it happened. And we know the Unicorn was real, a little one-room venue in Boston where Butterfield frequently played.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Ram by Paul & Linda McCartney

A fine vinyl release here back in the day. The only album ever credited to the husband and wife team eventually ended up being one of McCartney’s most highly acclaimed albums of his solo career.

7:00 p.m. Eva Cassidy Live at Blues Alley, Georgetown, Washington, D.C., January 2-3, 1996

We have the date of this great performance by Eva Cassidy, a great folk and blues singer who passed on the very same year of this performance.

Our overseas friends make up the bulk of listeners every morning. Some of them have been on all night, depending upon where they live! And the folks from Kansas? They’re either dead or just really like the radio station because they’ve been on for two days solid now. Whatever works.
