Another Monday. We’ve Got Dylan and Harrison at Columbia, Stills’ Demo Album, and Allen Toussaint In the Spotlight, January 10, 2021

Happy Monday, Musicologists! I promise we’ve got some great stuff here for you to help get you through the day, not to mention our usual great wide Open Stream before, in between, and after.

Here’s Monday’s musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. Bob Dylan & George Harrison: The Columbia Studio Sessions, May 1, 1970

Rumors abound in the music world. With this event, it was rumored that Dylan and Harrison were supposed to meet Elvis on this day, but he stood them up. The other half of the rumor is that they actually got caught up in the studio and stood him up. Who knows the real truth?

3:00 p.m. Stephen Stills: Just Roll Tape, April 26, 1968

Here’s another rock n’ roll story for you. Stills was helping Judy Collins out in a New York recording studio with one of her albums, and they wound up having extra studio time. Legend has it that Stills paid the engineer privately to let him record song demos. This was the result.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Allen Toussaint

A lot of people recognize the name, but don’t really know who Allen Toussaint is. He was a musician, song writer, arranger, and producer who was born in New Orleans and raised in a shotgun house in a Gert Town neighborhood. His mother, Naomi Neville, welcomed and fed all kinds of musicians who played and recorded with Allen. Toussaint was one of the most influential figures in New Orleans R & B, with a career that began in 1958 and lasted until his death in 2015. Give him a listen. You won’t regret it.
