Booker T. & the MG’s were an American instrumental R&B/funk band that was not only the Stax Records House Band, but was also influential in shaping the sound of Southern soul and Memphis soul. The original members of the group were Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Lewie Steinberg, and Al Jackson Jr. Today we put them In the Spotlight.

We continue on the blue theme this evening with a whole new set of characters including Laura Nyro, Robert Johnson, Steve Earle & The Dukes, The Doors, Van Morrison, Cream, Guy Clark, Canned Heat, The Smithereens, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, The Kinks, Little Feat, B. B. King, Buddy Guy and more!

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA, Recorded January 31-February 7, 1997, Part One

Back in 1997, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers played a 20-night, sold-out residency at The Fillmore West where they broke the rules and the mold, tossing out their set lists and allowing the fans to suggest songs to sing. The result? Each night, a different set list. Petty announced to the crowd, “We all feel this might be the high point of our time together as a group. It’s going to be hard to get us off this stage tonight.” And that was a very good thing. We will air the first part tonight. The next two parts will be aired Wednesday and Thursday of this week. (Because Tuesday is Bluesday only.)

On This Keep-It-Simple Sunday, We’ve Got Our AOW by Buffalo Springfield and ‘The Original Sixties Rotation’ EP, May 21, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! As you know, we keep it simple on Sundays with plenty of wide Open Stream, but we do have a great new AOW and our original sixties rotation.

Here’s your simple Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Buffalo Springfield by Buffalo Springfield NEW!

Although Buffalo Springfield wasn’t satisfied with this album, recorded in the summer of 1966 at Gold Star Studios, this was a groundbreaking album in many respects. Five of the songs were written by a guy named Neil Young, but he only sang lead on one of those. Richie Furay sang lead on the rest. Their first release from the album did not catch on nationally, but did make the Top 40 in Los Angeles during the month of August. However, by December, Stephen Stills’ For What It’s Worth became a national hit. The rest, as they say, is musical history. Aside from Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, the band was rounded out by Bruce Palmer (bass guitar) and Dewey Martin (drums, backing vocals).

Our first sixties extended playlist with five uninterrupted hours of music from the early-to-mid sixties (although I am sure some songs from the latter part of that decade slipped in). The band finally released their first album 32 years after arriving in L.A. Disbanded by the record company, Petty formed The Heartbreakers. In 2008, he reformed Mudcrutch with the original members and released this great album. They also took to the road.

We close out the blues programming with our queen of blues-rock live from The Fillmore East in New York.
