4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Cass Elliot NEW!

We leave out the “Mama” because we’ve read many times that she hated that moniker. Cass Elliot was an enigma and the subject of many rumors, and I very much look forward to reading her daughter’s biography. One thing is for certain, she had a great voice and was a member of one of the most influential bands of the sixties, The Mamas & The Papas. She went on to have a successful solo career, recording five albums as a solo artist. She died far too young, at the age of 35. Today, we’ve finally given her the ‘Spotlight’ she deserves.

8:00 p.m. Gov’t Mule Live at The Roseland Ballroom, New York, NY, October 22, 1996

One of the best road jam bands finishes up our Saturday programming this evening. The band started at a ‘side project’ by guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody on a break from The Allman Brothers Band back in 1994. They’ve been together ever since.

October 9 wasn’t just John Lennon’s birthday. It was Jackson Browne’s 76th birthday as well. Today, we celebrate a singer-songwriter legend.

We close it out with Gov’t Mule in a live performance filmed for Germany’s Rockpalast television show.

This is our first Gov’t Mule music ever, and we’re excited to be adding this band, finally, to the rotation. They are not there yet, but we’ve got everything lined up to add. In the meantime, let this performance at Rockpalast whet your whistle!

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Laid Back by Gregg Allman

The second airing of Gregg Allman’s debut solo album, released in October 1973 is on tap for mid-afternoon. Not only do we have a total blues Tuesday, but there’s a connection between Gregg Allman and Warren Haynes, leader of Gov’t Mule and former Allman guitarist.

7:00 p.m. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Live at The Unicorn Coffee House, Boston, MA, Spring, 1966

A classic band performing at one of Boston’s great small music venues of days gone by. I have fond memories of small Boston music venues. Jonathan Swift’s, The Harvard Square Theatre, and Passim’s Coffee Shop are just a few of those great venues which are now defunct. Too bad. We saw a lot of great people there.
