Today It’s Music About Being ‘Under The Influence’ With Volume Two of ‘Repeat After Me’ Up Later On, Friday, September 16, 2022

Come on. We’ve all been under the influence at one time or another, whether it be legal or illegal. There’s no shortage of music out there talking about the subject, from John Lee Hooker to Jimi Hendrix. We’ve got it all for you in today’s EP.

Here’s your Friday lineup!

10:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

There’s no shortage of songs on this subject, and we’ve got a very eclectic cast of characters here with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Donovan, Glenn Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Little Feat, Linda Ronstadt, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, The Beatles, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man, and more! Enough to fill up just about five hours of fun, both legal and not.

7:00 p.m. Repeat After Me, Volume Two: Various Artists

More of what we began last night at 7:00 p.m. with artists covering each others songs. The Great Reboot, as it were (as opposed to the right-wing Great Reset bullshit). They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and the music business is literal proof. We have a third volume in the works.

Before, in between and after we have our great wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid. She is in full control and, as you well know, she has great taste in music. Join our friends from Greece, Italy, France, the UK, Russian Federation, Portugal, Spain, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Kansas, Massachusetts, Texas and Cali. They are all on this busy morning.

It’s Friday and We’ve Got Our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP and Jeff Lynne’s ELO In The Spotlight Later, September 9, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! Here we are again at the end of another work week (almost, if you’re a retail slave), and we’re getting you through with some great music today.

Later tonight we have the music of Jeff Lynne’s ELO In the Spotlight!

Here’s your music for today:

11:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

Looking out my window here in The Mermaid Lounge, it’s a beautiful morning. And what better way to kick off the programming today than with our ‘Ode to Morning’ EP. You’ll hear Joni Mitchell, The Move, Fleetwood Mac, Foreigner, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Nina Simone, Cat Stevens, Hoyt Axton, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Dan Fogelberg, Harry Chapin, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Linda Ronstadt, Jonathan Edwards, Townes Van Zandt, Pure Prairie League, Bob Dylan, Chris Hillman, Badfinger and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra

We have not heard this one for a while now, and we’re happy to be airing this tonight. We give you former Petty producer and lifetime Traveling Wilbury Jeff Lynne’s primary music project by putting ELO In the Spotlight.

We could go on and on this morning, but we won’t. All we’ll say is that we have listeners from around the world on here every day: Germany, Greece, Italy, Peru, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Australia, Japan, Russian Federation, as well as Kansas, Cali, New Hampshire and Wisconsin on this morning. We’re totally free 24/7 with no commercial interruption. Done here.

It’s Finally Friday and We’ve Got Our ‘Folk Music From A-To-Z’ EP and a Visit From the I-Threes Coming Up, August 19, 2022

Good Morning, Reggaeologists! Yes. It’s still Reggae Week, right through to Sunday. Or Maybe Monday. We’ll see. But today, we’ve got the I-Threes coming’ at ya, and I’m pretty sure there’ll be plenty of folks out there who don’t really know who they are. We’re going to help you with that.

The I-Threes are Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffiths.

Here’s today’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

Folk music was the original musical genre of the protest generation with Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Odetta, Phil Ochs, Lead Belly as the forefathers. Today, they’ll be joined by others, including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Peter, Paul & Mary, John Prine, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Arlo Guthrie, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, The Carter Family, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Jackson Browne, Jesse Winchester, Joni Mitchell, The Stone Poneys, Harry Chapin, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The I-Threes NEW!

So, who are the I-Threes? The I-Threes are Rita Marley (yes, wife of Bob), Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffiths and it is the most influential female group in Reggae music. From 1974 right up until Bob Marley’s untimely death ten years later, they provided his rich vocal backgrounds. They also made music of their own. And today we are very excited about putting them In the Spotlight as we continue to focus on the women of music here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Come on, people. This is your chance to tune us in. We’re hear 24/7 around the clock every day trying to bring you the best of music. And that means we don’t play the same songs over and over and over. We play just enough of our house bands, but not too much. We are also advertising-free and do not require your personal information, a subscription or your credit card. Your money is absolutely no good here.

We Start The Day With Our ‘Under The Influence’ EP and Close It With Bob Marley & The Wailers, On Wednesday, August 17, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We start out the day Under The Influence with our many friends who sing about those mind-altering vices, and get back to Reggae with Bob Marley & The Wailers tonight.

The Caterpillar knows best.

Here’s today’s midweek lineup:

10:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Let’s all admit that we’ve been here, whether or not our vices of choice are legal or illegal. You’ll hear many a tale from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glenn Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, The Beatles, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Bob Marley & The Wailers

Known as ‘The Legend’ among Reggae fans, Bob Marley is perhaps the most visual and storied ambassador of Reggae, Ska, Rocksteady. In 1963, he formed The Wailers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. By late 1963, Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, and Cherry Smith had joined the group. The rest, as they say, is history as they became the most influential band in Reggae music.

Come on, music lovers. What’s not to love here? We don’t spread endless chatter while we should be playing music. We simply play music. No cost to you. Ever. And no reason to ask for personal information or a credit card. I know you probably find that hard to believe, but hey, why not see for yourself?

Good Morning, Musicologists! We are finally at week’s end here, and we’re falling ‘Under The Influence’ with our spectacular multi-artist EP. Later, Warren Zevon pays us a visit.

Today, we’re ‘Under The Influence’ starting at 11:00 a.m. EST

Here’s your Friday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Today, we’ve got a great lineup of artists who will put you under the influence. You’ll hear Arlo Guthrie, The Byrds, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Jefferson Airplane, Donovan, Glenn Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, The Beatles, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man, and many more!

7:00 p.m. Warren Zevon Live at Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK, January 25, 1988

This appearance was broadcast on BBC Radio. Undoubtedly one of the most personally destructive artists on the planet, but that may have been what made him so damned good. He was also, without a doubt, one hell of a great singer-songwriter. Flawed, but brilliant. He was laboring in obscurity until someone named Linda Ronstadt discovered his genius.

Join us. We’ve got all that great wide Open Stream coursing through the modest programming we have. Even most of our playlists are multi-artist. We think we strike a great balance here. We too labor in obscurity because we have no dollars to spend on promoting. Please share our stuff if you like us. And did I mention we’re totally 100% without strings free?

Today We’ve Got Our ‘Folk Music From A-To-Z’ EP and a Brand New Spotlight With The Mamas & The Papas, Friday, May 20, 2022

We finally put The Mamas & The Papas In the Spotlight this evening!

Here’s Friday’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

Folk music is front and center today as the heart and soul of protest music. Spend the day with artists who shaped the folk music resurgence of the sixties, and those who simply pay homage to the craft. You’ll hear John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Jesse Winchester, Joni Mitchell, The Stone Poneys, Phil Ochs, Harry Chapin, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, Jackson Browne, Guy Clark, James Taylor, The Carter Family, Linda Ronstadt, and many more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Mamas & The Papas NEW!

This one is long overdue here in The Mermaid Lounge. One of the key groups in the Laurel Canyon scene finally gets its due here. This is a perfect fit today because The Mamas & The Papas were instrumental in the marriage of folk and rock, much in the same way The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds were instrumental in the birth of country-rock. The Mamas & The Papas were only on the music scene from 1965 to 1968, but their impact was significant.

Great day to tune us in, folks. We’ve got a great programming day lined up. Keep in mind that our programming is interspersed in all that great wide Open Stream where you’ll hear our ever-rotating collection of 27,000+ songs and growing. We’re totally free 24/7 and ask no questions except: What are you waiting for?

At Midweek We’ve Got Our ‘Under the Influence’ EP, Trifectas in the Afternoon, and Jesse Winchester ‘Live’ Later, Wednesday, May 18, 2022

We’ve got some live Jesse Winchester for you later!

Here’s your midweek lineup:

9:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Yeah, we’ve all been here. Let’s not deny it. Whether it was legal or not, we have all indulged. Don’t deny it. You’ll hear Arlo Guthrie, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glenn Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, The Beatles, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, The Band, Harry Chapin, The Fraternity of Man, and many more!

3:00 p.m. Open Stream with On-the-Hour Trifectas!

We revert to Open Stream for a few hours, so we’re starting each hour with a Trifecta!

3:00 p.m. Joan Baez

4:00 p.m. Alison Krauss

5:00 p.m. Bonnie Raitt

6:00 p.m. The Supremes

7:00 p.m. Jesse Winchester Live at The Bijou Cafe, Philadelphia, PA, May 26. 1977

Here’s a great singer-songwriter who doesn’t get enough credit, but we love him here in The Mermaid Lounge. He was great when I saw him in venues like The Saratoga Performing Arts Center in upstate New York, but he’s spectacular in small, intimate settings like The Bijou Cafe. Tune him in.

Come on, people. What’s it going to take to get you to tune us in? We have loyal listeners from all over the planet. It’s time for you to join us, and it will not cost you a penny.

You will hear Cream, Paul McCartney & Wings, the Marshall Tucker Band, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Laura Nyro, Patti Smith, The Wallflowers, John Prine, John Lennon, Tom Rush, Joni Mitchell, Nanci Griffith, The Band, Bruce Springsteen, The Shelters, Hot Tuna, Townes Van Zandt, Randy Newman, Three Dog Night, Mudcrutch, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The James Gang, Taj Mahal, Aerosmith, Alison Krauss, Electric Light Orchestra, Stephen Stills, Alison Krauss, Fats Domino, Widespread Panic, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, The Youngbloods, Patsy Cline and more! That’s five straight hours of uninterrupted music.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Meet The Beatles by The Beatles

The next-to-last airing of the musical shot heard ’round the world is upon us. Get it while you can, folks. When you wake up on Sunday, disgusted with another foot of snow (at least in these here parts), there’s going to be a new selection on the turntable.

Great day to tune us in. We’ve got a great collection of extended playlists with themes, and ‘In Your Dreams’ is our newest. Be here today for its debut! It won’t cost you a cent. No joining fees. It’s Sunday Funday With Our Folk Music Longplayer; The Wallflowers Own Our Album of The Week, May 23, 2021

Good Morning, Folks! It’s Sunday Funday here in The Mermaid Lounge and it’s time once again for our folk music extravaganza and a brand new Album of The Week.

Folk Music From A to Z begins at 3:00 p.m. today!

Here’s your Sunday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: The Wallflowers by The Wallflowers NEW!

As you may (or may not) know, Jakob Dylan recently announced that there will be a brand new Wallflowers album for the first time in nine years. I just happened to catch a pre-release of one of the songs and it was great. It inspired me to make their 1992 debut release our Album of The Week this week. This is a pretty damned fine band. All songs were composed by Jakob Dylan with the exception of one, and he assisted on that one.

3:00 p.m. Folk Music From A to Z: Various Artists

One of our favorite playlists here in The Mermaid Lounge is afoot today, and you’ll hear Odetta, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul & Mary, Bonnie Raitt, Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty,, The Beatles, Arlo Guthrie, Ton Rush, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Tim Hardin and many more.

You can catch the entire set list in the Playlist section of this blog. Just scroll until you find it!

Even the particular god of your choice took Sunday off. The retail establishments forget, of course, that Sunday is a day of rest. But Capitalism reigns here in America. We must exercise our right to buy seven days of the week even as our individual rights erode hourly (and I’m not talking about fucking masks either). But I digress. You must tune in, turn on, and drop out if that is an option for you. It’ll save your mental health. We won’t cost you a penny.
