It’s Tuesday Bluesday and we’ve finally converted our Chicago Blues playlist into an EP with the addition of new cuts and artists. We also give you Eva Cassidy later.

We’ve been threatening to do this, and it finally came to fruition over the weekend. Our Chicago Blues playlist has now grown up and is an EP! We’ve added all new cuts and some new artists. You’ll hear Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Otis Rush, Willie Dixon Albert King, Little Walter, Koko Taylor, Lowell Fulson, Buddy Guy, Magic Slim, Sonny Boy Williamson, Son Seals, James Cotton, Paul Butterfield, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, Otis Spann and more! This is now just over five hours of uninterrupted blues!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: American Tune by Eva Cassidy

The second airing of this great posthumously-released album is upon us. It’s a collection of rehearsal songs and live cuts from a woman who passed from our realm far too soon.

We’re on simple mode today as we debut our new extended playlist. We’ve also got some new Tuesday Bluesday surprises coming up as we gear up for summer! You’re going to like it around here as we move forward with some new music and new playlists. And we’re totally free. We’re a labor of musical love.

11:00 a.m. The Best of Chicago Blues: Various Artists NEW!

There’s nothing like Chicago and the blues, that’s for sure. I made several trips out to the Windy City during a previous lifetime and made sure to frequent the blues clubs every time. Today you’ll hear Otis Rush, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Howlin’ Wolf, Magic Slim, Son Seals, Lonnie Brooks, Buddy Guy, Sonny Boy Williamson and more!

This one is already crying out for update and extension. We’ll get there, but we kick off this playlist with nearly three hours of blues.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Greatest Hits by Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac

This is the second airing of our AOW, and it’s a great one. As I’ve said before, greatest hits collections do not often appear on our list (there are always exceptions), but his one belongs here. Not many people realize that Peter Green is a founding member of Fleetwood Mac, and that the Mac started out as a British blues-rock band.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Taj Mahal

I remember my first trip to the House of Blues in New Orleans years ago and the painting of Taj Mahal on the box office wall. I’ve been hooked ever since. Taj Mahal, also known as Henry St. Claire Fredericks, Jr., is a blues musician, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who plays banjo, guitar, piano and harmonica, among other instruments. He often gives a little world music flavor to the blues. You’ll love him if you haven’t heard him before.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday in the College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge, and we press on with some great events in our musical history.

***The Kingston Trio made musical history in 1958***

Here’s today’s classic rock lesson:

November 24, 1958: The Kingston Trio became the first group to have a #1 album. Only solo artists had achieved that prior to them.

November 24, 1961: Howlin’ Wolf arrived in London for his first European tour.

November 24, 1965: The Young Rascals begin recording Good Lovin’ which will hit #1 early the next year.

November 24, 1966: The Beatles begin recording sessions for Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band by laying down tracks for Strawberry Fields Forever. In the end, the song doesn’t make the album, but it will appear on Magical Mystery Tour the following year.

November 24, 1972: ABC-TV’s In Concert debuts with Alice Cooper, Chuck Berry, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Poco, and The Allman Brothers Band. Don Kirschner is the producer, and he also produces The Monkees.

November 24, 1979: The Eagles spend a fourth week on top of the album charts with The Long Run.

November 24, 1980: Steely Dan releases the single Hey Nineteen, one of my all-time favorite songs.

November 24, 1985: Blues pioneer Big Joe Turner died of kidney failure at the age of 74. Turner was one of the first artists to ever play rock n’ roll when he wrote and recorded Shake, Rattle and Roll in 1954.

November 24, 1991: Freddie Mercury dies of bronchopneumonia, a complication from AIDS, at his home in London at the age of 45. He had just publicly acknowledged having the disease the day before. His friend (and nothing more), Dave Clark, of The Dave Clark Five, was with him when he died.

November 24, 1939: Jim Yester, keyboardist for The Association, was born in Birmingham, Alabama.

November 24, 1941: Pete Best, drummer for The Beatles in the very early years, was born in Madras, India.

November 24, 1941: Donald “Duck” Dunn, bass guitarist for the Mar-Keys, and Booker T. & The MG’s, was born in Memphis, Tennessee.
