This is another artist who has been high on our list, but when you’re a one-woman band here it takes time. Bobbie Gentry really just wanted to write songs to sell to others. She never really wanted to perform her own work. But singing Ode To Billie Joe was cheaper than hiring someone else to do it, so she went into the studio. The rest is history, and the album garnered several Grammy Awards. The problem is that people only remember her for Ode to Billie Joe, and she was so much more. We will begin to reveal the many facets of Bobbie Gentry today.

10:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield

This was the first time Dusty Springfield brought her unique R & B style together with the Memphis sound. It sold poorly when it was released in 1969, but as Springfield’s music became known and her legend grew, things changed. Later, it would be acclaimed by critics as one of the most important popular music albums ever made. It also spawned Son of A Preacher Man, Springfield’s “signature” song and her great version of Windmills Of Your Mind.

Earlier during Tom Petty month we played the recordings of the Heartbreakers’ legendary 20-might residency at the Fillmore West from 1997. Tonight, we close out another Tom Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge with recordings from the band’s 1999 residency at The Fillmore.

There are many reasons to tune us in, people. Must I keep listing them? I mean, I will if I have to. We’re totally free and we don’t ask for a credit card or personal information. We don’t accept advertising, so we don’t mess up the musical vibe with endless capitalist chatter, and our DJ is practically a mute. We heard of Nanci Griffith’s passing on August 13 at the age of 68, and a sad day it was. Her songs have contributed so much to the careers of so many of her peers over the years. Today, however, we turn the mike over to Nanci Griffith her self as we present just over two hours of her music.

Raised in Austin, Texas, Nanci Griffith lived in Nashville where it was described she kept one foot in country music and one foot in folk music. She appeared on the show Austin City Limits a number of times over her career. During her career, she recorded 18 studio albums, 2 live albums, and released 17 singles.

7:00 p.m. J.J. Cale & Leon Russell In Session at Paradise Studios, Los Angeles, June 1979

Here we have the marriage of two masters in session from Russell’s Paradise Studios in Los Angeles, guitarist J.J. Cale and pianist Leon Russell. In a 21-song set, they are joined by Cale’s wife, Christine Lakeland, on guitar, harmonica and backing vocals. Also in the session are Marty Grebb (Horn), Larry Bell (Piano), Nick Rather (Bass), Jimmy Karstein, and Ambrose Campbell (Percussion/Drums), Bill Boatman (Guitar), Pat “Taco” Ryan (Brass) and Shamsi Sarumi (Percussion).
