Another trip down Reggae Road here with Desmond Dekker, a Jamaican Reggae, Ska and Rocksteady singer-songwriter and musician. Together with his backing band, The Aces, he had one of the first international reggae hits with his song Israelites. I remember hearing that song on the radio over and over and I loved it. But I didn’t really have a total appreciation for Reggae then as I do now.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at Boston Garden, Boston, MA, May 12, 1980 NEW!

Another great concert from a great jam band. This one comes from my hometown back in 1980. We’ve had a few from Boston, but not from 1980 yet. Tonight, we’ve got that one too.

Well, once again, allow me to tell you that it would be a great day to spend with us here in The Mermaid Lounge if you can spare some time. It won’t take long for you to get hooked. Trust me. We’re not about charging money so you can build Internet playlists. If you want to do that, you can go pay Spotify. We’re all about being radio. Young’s great compilation of live acoustic set songs from his 1976 tour with Crazy Horse is an artistic tour de force. This is our second-to-last airing of this great album, so don’t let it pass you by. Our final airing will be on Saturday.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Tracy Nelson

Tracy Nelson has had a storied career and started out in band called Mother Earth. She’s sung some country-rock and a whole lot of blues. She also wrote one of my all-time favorite Linda Ronstadt tunes, Down So Low. We put Tracy Nelson in the spotlight tonight.

This is another repeat performance, but hasn’t been cued up since 2020. It’ll be just like new. This is one of those great music venues that I spent much of my youthful time visiting. And this is a great Dead soundboard. Don’t miss it.

Saturday is always a good day to take us for a spin. While some of us are still toiling away with the general public, you can be here listening to great music. All day. You know, there’s urban legend, and then there’s sheer musical ignorance. The notion that Ringo isn’t a “good” drummer is patently absurd. In fact, his peers will tell you otherwise. Perhaps you should watch this video featuring Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Jim Keltner, Stewart Copeland, Tre Cool, Chad Smith and others. Remember, The Beatles wanted Ringo and stole him from Rory Storm & The Hurricanes, dumping Pete Best in the process. He’s a drummer’s drummer, and most of the criticism is because he isn’t John Bonham with his 40-minute drum solos. But that shit? That shit breaks up the continuity of a song, in my humble opinion. And Ringo was and still is all about giving the song what it needs. His attitude about drum solos is all that it proves is that you took lessons. But best of all is that Ringo is just a good guy who has fun on stage with his All Starr band, and at 82, he’s still filling stadiums to spread his feel-good sounds. Today, we celebrate Ringo’s 82nd birthday (yesterday) with some of our favorites where he was only the drummer, every song he sang solo on as a member of The Beatles, and his own solo stuff.

Get on board the weekend train because we are almost there, people. It’s all downhill from here, as they say. I will, of course, have one day left after today since I toil in the very real world of retail hell in a nation where buying is equated with freedom. So are guns. But we won’t go there. Instead, we’ll focus on the music, so join us. We promise no chatty DJs, and no news here. Just music 24/7. And did I mention we’re totally FREE (in all caps and with NO strings)?

11:00 a.m. Neil Young Live at The Cellar Door, Washington, D.C., recorded in 1970 NEW!

This collection of live performances was recorded during Young’s six live performances in Washington in 1970. It is vintage Neil Young from his early albums and from his Buffalo Springfield years. It also features the only known recording of Cinnamon Girl (a Mermaid Lounge favorite) with young playing piano.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: American Beauty by The Grateful Dead

We’re at the next-to-last airing of American Beauty. The final will be sometime Saturday and, by Sunday, it will be a thing of the past as we have a new selection waiting in the wings.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Emmylou Harris

It’s time to put Emmylou in the spotlight again. Over the cours of her career she has evolved into one of the most influential contributors to the country and country-rock music scene. She has released dozens of singles and albums over her career and has won 14 Grammy Awards. She became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1992, ws inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008, and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.

Great day to tune us in, as is every day. I know. I sound like, well, a broken record. But I can’t help myself. I can’t understand for the life of me why people would prefer to pay for their music. Or have to put up with commercial advertising and chatty DJs. What are you waiting for?

We haven’t heard this for a while, and it is definitely time to break it out into the open again. Born Ronald Clyde Crosby, our friend Jerry Jeff knew he couldn’t cut it as one of the leaders of the country outlaw movement with that name. He is best known for writing the song Mr. Bojangles, but he was much more than that. My personal favorite album is It’s A Good Night For Singin’ and my all-time favorite JJW song is Very Short Time. Like it or not, we’re all on short time here.
