For two generations of musicians (the 60s and 70s), Laurel Canyon was the place to be. It was a commune of creative activity, with all of these guys feeding off each other musically to create some of the most amazing sounds and songs in popular music history. You’ll hear The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Doors, The Mamas & The Papas, The Monkees, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Neil Young, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, J.D. Souther, Bonnie Raitt, Canned Heat, The Eagles, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and more! This is just about five hours of uninterrupted music.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Meet The Beatles by The Beatles FINAL AIRING!

We bid a fond farewell today to our Album of The Week, what I call the musical shot heard ’round the world. During his Musicares speech in 2017, Mr. Petty said when he heard The Beatles for the first time he had his eyes opened, like everybody else. We agree. Tomorrow, however, we will have a new selection.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Fillmore East, New York, January 2, 1970 NEW!

We have featured several of The Dead’s road performances from the Fillmore West, but this is our first airing of a show from The Fillmore East, a venue that certainly doesn’t get as much attention as it’s West Coast counterpart, but a great venue that hosted some amazing acts as well. It was part of that cross-pollination project. This is another new soundboard recording. Enjoy.

Saturday is always a good day here in The Mermaid Lounge. This one is no exception. Hey, I have to serve the retail masses, but we’ve got you covered. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor retail will break our stride. The Music Mermaid is in charge, baby, and she’s on top of this shit. So, tune us in. 7:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & Spyboy Live at Kongresshaus, Zurich, Switzerland, January 20, 1977

We go on the road with Emmylou Harris & Spyboy for the Wrecking Ball tour, what many consider Harris’ career-redefining album produced by Daniel Lanois. She took a minimalist approach with her band, bringing it back to basics. Spyboy consisted of country singer-songwriter Buddy Miller on guitar, and two New Orleans musicians, Daryl Johnson on bass and Brady Blade on drums. As it turns out, Wrecking Ball is one of my all-time favorite Emmylou Harris albums.

Souther, Carole King, The Eagles, James Taylor, and more! It’s more than four hours of uninterrupted musical nirvana.

7:00 p.m. Little Feat Live at The Orpheum Theatre, Boston, Massachusetts, October 31, 1975

One of the greatest bands of all time is live from Boston in this set, and I’m pleased to say that I was in attendance for this one. They’re a little bit swamp music, a little bit blues, a little bit country and a whole lot of rock n’ roll. They’re also a Mermaid Lounge favorite.

Before, in between, and after our programming we’re on wide Open Stream 24/7. We’ve got so much music you’ll be hard pressed to hear a repeat in a given day. For those who do not know Valerie Carter, this album is a great way to start that process. It is so hard to categorize this album (her debut album). It’s a little bit folk, it’s a little bit country, it’s got some jazz moments and it’s a lot of R & B and funk. Carter has an amazing voice that can handle it all. Just A Stone’s Throw was produced by Lowell George (Little Feat), George Massenburg, and Maurice White (Earth, Wind & Fire). It featured musicians like Jackson Browne, Bob Glaub, Herb Pederson, John Sebastion and literally all of Little Feat. Her back-up singers included Linda Ronstadt, Deniece Williams, Herb Pederson, Lowell George, and Maurice White. Yeah, you’ve got all week to tune it in, but why wait?

3:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

We have two massive sixties rotation EP’s, and this is the first from the early sixties to the mid-sixties. There’s some overlap in artists from one to the other, but none of the songs overlap. There’s no question that Laurel Canyon was the epicenter of the musical revolution of the 60’s and 70’s. Jakob Dylan and Tom Petty knew it. The both drew musical inspiration from those bands.

All of these great musicians lived within walking distance of each other. Mama Cass invited people over to jam and have lunch (she also never cleaned her house), Jackson Browne lived in a basement under Don Henley, Graham Nash wrote Our House in a tiny house in Laurel, everyone loved partying with The Monkees, and John Mayall’s first album after the Bluesbreakers broke up was Blues From Laurel Canyon.
