We’re going to kick off the day with the man who is rightfully seen as a pioneer of Reggae music, Bob Marley. Widely recognized as the premier Jamaican singer, songwriter and musician, he and the Wailers developed a unique sound of their own by fusing together elements of Reggae, Ska and Rocksteady.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Songbird by Eva Cassidy FINAL AIRING!

Today is the final airing of Eva Cassidy’s Songbird album. She had a beautiful voice that many people still have yet to experience. She is now in our standard rotation, but this album will give you the immersion experience. Enjoy before we choose a new album tomorrow.

6:00 p.m. Eric Clapton & Friends Pay Tribute to J.J. Cale

Eric Clapton and his friends pay tribute to one of the great singer-songwriters of any generation, J.J. Cale, the man who pioneered what is called the Tulsa Sound, which fused blues, swamp music, rockabilly, country and jazz. Although he avoided the limelight, artists like Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and Neil Young believe he was one of the most important musicl figures in popular music.

It has been a while since the release of the Wildflowers Project, and we’re going to start revisiting it intermittently today. We begin with All The Rest, or the songs that didn’t make the album. Of course, some of these songs appeared somewhere later down the road. However, some were not heard until this project was released, like Leave Virginia Alone and Confusion Wheel. We have those here today.

This was originally billed as McGuinn, Clark & Hillman, but then the ever-erratic David Crosby showed up and completed the original quartet for an actual Byrds reunion at The Boarding House in San Francisco. This was broadcast on KSAN 95.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Timeless, A Tribute to Hank Williams, Various Artists

This is a great line-up here, featuring Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Sheryl Crow, Keb’ Mo’, Mark Knopfler, Keith Richards, Beck, Emmylou Harris, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Ryan Adams and Hank Williams III.

This is the band that Tom Petty left Gainesville with all those years ago. In fact, the original Don’t Do Me Like That was a Mudcrutch song. Mudcrutch didn’t pan out back then, but it morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Then, in 2008, Tom Petty brought the original Mudcrutch back, and it was a whole new ballgame. We have their entire catalogue here this morning. You’ll want to hear this.

5:00 p.m. Goin’ Home, A Tribute to Fats Domino: Various Artists

There is no denying Antoine ‘Fats’ Domino’s place in the annals of rock n’ roll music. I’m not sure anybody was actually playing it before he was. This is truly an all-star tribute, featuring Art Neville, John Lennon, Lucinda Williams, Norah Jones, Tom Petty, Robbie Robertson, Toots & The Maytalls, Irma Thomas & Marcia Ball, Bonnie Raitt, Paul McCartney, Allen Toussaint and more!

It’s Sunday and Linda Ronstadt Owns Our Album of The Week, We Have Chosen Petty’s Top 50 Songs, and Truffle Brings Up The Rear With a Great Live Performance, January 10, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We have a great line-up for you today, including our new Album of The Week and our first attempt to list Tom Petty’s Top 50 songs.

Tom Petty’s music will stand the test of time.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: We Ran by Linda Ronstadt NEW!

By 1998, when this album was released, Linda Ronstadt was an accomplished veteran of the music scene, and certainly a pioneer for all women in the male-oriented rock world who had more than made her mark. As such, she was at the stage of her career where she could make anything she wanted. And she did. This was effectively her final rock n’ roll album, interpreting songs by the likes of Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Bruce Springsteen, and Naomi Neville. Neville’s Ruler of My Heart and Hiatt’s We Ran were the hooks for me.

As for the musicians who contributed to this album? They were the best of the best: Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench of The Heartbreakers, Bernie Leadon (formerly of The Eagles), drummer Russ Kunkel, and guitarists Andy Fairweather Low, Waddy Wachtel, and Bob Glaub.

This is probably her most eclectic album ever, and one of my favorites.

2:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: Tom Petty’s Top 50 Songs NEW!

Someone sent me an email about two months ago challenging me to do this, so I finally found some time to make it happen. This includes Petty’s solo work, and his work with The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, and The Traveling Wilburys. It’s my Top 50. For now. This is subject to change without notice, by the way.

We are giving some airtime here to a great local band whose music embodies everything we play here on #BecomeUngovernable Radio. In case you missed this airing the first time around, we are rerunning it this evening, and we will be adding their collection to our standard rotation over the next few weeks.

Who the hell knows what it takes to get people to tune in. At least here in America, where they appear to be a bit slow on the uptake on many issues. Perhaps they prefer endless talk, commercials or paying for what they used to get for free (shades of Tom Petty’s The Last DJ. Hey, Hey, Hey).

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Joan Baez by Joan Baez NEW!

This album has great historical significance to music. In 2015, the album was placed into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress for special recognition and preservation as one of the sound recordings in over 130 years of recording history that has “cultural, artistic and/or historical significance to American society and the nation’s audio legacy” It was recorded in the summer of 1960 and released the same year. Later re-issues contained bonus tracks, but this is the original 13 songs and nothing more.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Peculiar Picks: The Best of The Buried Treasure Show NEW!

Tom Petty had a side gig. He was a DJ on The Buried Treasure Show, which debuted on Sirius XM’s Deep Tracks channel, then moved to Tom Petty Radio. Tom Petty shared not only some pretty great music (some of it buried and pretty obscure), but his knowledge about its history and how it influenced the influencers. Those of us who listen beyond the catchy tune stage consider this show a national treasure, and agree totally with the sentiment expressed in this article.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real

Yeah. He’s Willie’s boy. And he’s pretty damned good. POTR, as they are affectionately known, also has a side gig as Neil Young’s touring band. Can’t get a much better endorsement than that.

I have no clue what any of you are up to today but — whatever it is — you should have this station tuned in. After all, it’s Sunday Funday. And we’re really fun and won’t cost you a dime.

December 11, 1961: Motown Records has it’s first #1 hit on the Top 100 with Please Mr. Postman by the Marvelettes.

Also on this day, Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii goes to #1.

December 11, 1965: The Velvet Underground plays its first live gig when they open for a group called The Myddle Class in the auditorium of Summit High School in New Jersey.

December 11, 1966: Elton John’s band, Bluesology, opens for Little Richard in London. Elton would later say: “When I saw Little Richard standing on top of the piano, all lights, sequins, and energy, I decided there and then that I was going to be a rock and roll piano player.”

December 11, 1968: The Rolling Stones record their Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus TV special, then proceed to bury it for nearly 30 years.

December 11, 1970: John Lennon releases his first solo album, titled John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band.

December 11, 1972: Genesis plays its first US concert ever at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.

December 11, 1988: Tom Petty, Bonnie Raitt, Graham Nash and Don Henley perform at a Roy Orbison tribute concert at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.

December 11, 1990: Led Zeppelin IV is certified Diamond with sales of 10 million in the US.

December 11, 1926: Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton was born in Anton, Alabama. Willie Mae was the first to record Hound Dog, the song that would later be made famous by Elvis Presley.
