Happy Thanksgiving From The Mermaid Lounge, and We Promise Our Line-up is No Turkey Today, Thursday, November 25, 2021

11:00 a.m. Our Thanksgiving Tradition: The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree by Arlo Guthrie

We’ve been playing this as our Thanksgiving tradition since we started back in 2017, and we continue on today with all 18 minutes and 34 seconds. The song, recorded in 1967, occupies one entire side of Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant album. As Guthrie himself explains it, the restaurant is not really called Alice’s Restaurant, even though the song is about Alice and the restaurant. That factoid is in keeping with the song’s continuing mystery. You can find the lyrics here should you want to sing along.

2:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

This was the first time Dusty Springfield brought her unique R & B style together with the Memphis sound. It sold poorly when it was released in 1969, but as Springfield’s music became known and her legend grew, things changed. Later, it would be acclaimed by critics as one of the most important popular music albums ever made. It also spawned Son of A Preacher Man, Springfield’s “signature” song and her great version of Windmills Of Your Mind.

There are supergroups, then there are SUPERGROUPS. This one is in the latter category. Every poll I’ve seen taken in every music magazine and on every music website puts The Traveling Wilburys at the top of the supergroup heap, and we here in The Mermaid Lounge wholeheartedly agree. It started with George Harrison needing to record a “B side” for a release. The rest is history. You can read about it here.

Folk music is an amazing genre. I remember when folk music purists were upset the day Bob Dylan picked up an electric guitar. Dylan changed the face of folk and made it much more accessible to many people who may have ignored it. You’ll hear Bob Dylan in this EP. Yesterday was the actual release date fifteen years ago for Petty’s third and final solo album. We were pretty busy yesterday, so we thought we’d air it one final time today.

I was pretty much inspired by Chrissie Hynde’s Dylan’s covers album that is this week’s Album of The Week. The songs covered here are more of the well-known variety, but Dylan’s friend list is vast and this is a great concert with Tom Petty, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Chrissie Hynde, Roger McGuinn and many, many others. Not to be missed.

I don’t care who you are or where you are: There’s no denying Bob Dylan’s influence in the music world. Described as “the reigning queen of cool,” Chrissie Hynde makes no bones about how much Bob Dylan’s music has meant to her. She delivers a masterpiece of Bob Dylan songs recorded using cell phone technology during the pandemic lockdown here.

But you won’t find the usual Dylan classics here. Instead you’ll find nine songs that can be considered ‘overlooked’ Dylan songs, including the title track. As you may (or may not) know, Jakob Dylan recently announced that there will be a brand new Wallflowers album for the first time in nine years. I just happened to catch a pre-release of one of the songs and it was great. It inspired me to make their 1992 debut release our Album of The Week this week. This is a pretty damned fine band. All songs were composed by Jakob Dylan with the exception of one, and he assisted on that one.
