Alison Krauss & Union Station “Live,” Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are Our Tuesday Bluesday Feature & Van Morrison Captivates at The Hollywood Bowl, Tuesday, April 21, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! I had a schedule switch and I’m opening today, so we have an early blog post.

Van Morrison-Astral Weeks Live

Here’s Your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

12:00 p.m.   Alison Krauss & Union Station Live!

This was the eleventh album for the band, but its first live album. All of the songs were recorded at the Louisville Palace (April 29 & 30, 2002), with the exception of Down To The River To Pray, which was recorded at Austin City Limits.

4:00 p.m.     Tuesday Bluesday: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing the Blues

Tom Petty was serious about the blues, and his band could certainly sing and play the blues. He often said he envisioned them as old men sitting around with their guitars singing the blues.

8:00 p.m.     Van Morrison: Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl (2008)   NEW!

This was the fifth live album released by Van Morrison. It was recorded on November 7 and 8, 2008, exactly forty years after the first iteration of Astral Weeks was released. Morrison produced this effort, insisting on just one rehearsal and no post-production. Essentially you hear what the audience heard the two nights it was recorded.

10:00 p.m.   Album of the Week: Tom Petty’s Wildflowers

Wildflowers is the second solo studio album (of three) by Tom Petty, who was joined in the studio by his bandmates and a collection of some of the best studio musicians in rock n’roll history.

Emmylou Harris’ groundbreaking step added a new dimension to her already-sellar career. She assembled a band she called Spyboy to develop a ‘stripped down’ approach to the music she was making at the time. Read about it here.

8:00 p.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of The Shelters

Tom Petty mentored the Shelters and produced their first album. At the time of his death, he was working with them on their second album. The Shelters forged on without their friend, and finished the album. It is included in this playlist.
