We have Bob Marley on The Uprising Tour, his final tour ever. He would be dead less than a year later from melanoma.

11:00 a.m. Bob Marley & The Wailers Live at The Stanley Theatre, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania September 23, 1980

The Uprising Tour was Bob Marley’s final tour and the biggest European tour for that year, beginning in Zurich and ending at The Stanley Theatre (33 cities in Europe; 5 in the U.S.). Before September of the following year, Bob Marley would be dead from melanoma.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Rough and Rowdy Ways by Bob Dylan

This is the final airing of Dylan’s first album of original material since 2012’s Tempest. Tomorrow when you awaken, there will be a new selection.

7:00 p.m. Bonnie Raitt & Friends Live at Ultrasonic Studios, 1972

This great live album features Bonnie Raitt, Lowell George (Little Feat), John Hammond and Freebo at Ultrasonic Studios in New York. It was recorded and broadcast on WLIR-FM. We have it here for you today.

Bob Dylan Owns the Album of The Week, and The Sixties Playlist Returns on Sunday, January 17, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists. This is one of my favorite days here in The Mermaid Lounge because the Sixties are back once again with all the great music that goes with it.

Bob Dylan never ceases to amaze.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Rough and Rowdy Ways by Bob Dylan NEW!

Bob Dylan released his 39th album a bit earlier this year at the age of 79. The man never ceases to amaze. He has been at this for nearly 60 years, and he remains as in touch with the world around him now as he was when he was young. I include this review because it says it all perfectly, and prevents me from writing a tome here.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties, Volume Two: Various Artists

This is, without a doubt, my favorite playlist (along with Volume One, which we aired last time around. You can sing along with The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane, The Zombies, Buffalo Springfield, The Doors, Otis Redding, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and all the rest of the artists that inspired the creation of #BecomeUngovernable Radio.

Today we have BeauSoleil live from Louisiana, one of the most well respected Cajun/Zydeco bands today.

BeauSoleil was founded in 1975, and released their first album in 1977. The band plays traditional and original music rooted in the folk music of the Cajuns and Creoles of Louisiana. Consider this a warm-up for our Mardi Gras event.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: We Ran by Linda Ronstadt FINAL AIRING!

This is the last chance for you to give a listen to this great album. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new album featured when you drag your butts out of bed.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur

Maria Muldaur is a folk and blues singer who has been around since the folk revival of the sixties, playing with John Sebastian, the Even Dozen Jug Band, and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band as vocalist and sometimes violinist. Later, she’d lend her considerable talents to the Jerry Garcia Band. She’s in the spotlight here today.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh, June 30, 1995 NEW!

Again, more great music from the world’s premier jam band. Even on the same tour no two shows sound the same. What else can we possibly say about them except tune ’em in!

Yeah. I can say it until my eyes bleed. This is the station you should be listening to. But hey, if you’d rather pay for the stuff you used to get for free, go on. Some folks just don’t get it.

Gregg Allman Live at The House of Blues, Linda Ronstadt’s WE RAN, and We Celebrate Dave Grohl’s Birthday Later, January 14, 2021

Yes, Musicologists, it is a momentous day here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio. We have managed to celebrate someone’s birthday on time. See. Miracles are possible.

Gregg Allman was a pioneer in Southern Rock, and every bit as important to the Allman Brothers as his brother, Duane.

I never understood people in the musical know who continue to debate which Allman was more important to The Allman Brothers. The simple answer is both of them. Duane was indeed one of those rare guitar gods. No question about it. But after his death, it was Gregg that held the band together. He was the songwriter, the arranger, and had an amazing voice. Today we have him live from The House of Blues in NOLA.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: We Ran by Linda Ronstadt

If you haven’t tuned this one in yet, I must tell you we are working on our second to last airing here on Thursday. This is Ronstadt’s most eclectic rock album, in my opinion, in spite of the fact that it come towards the twilight of her rock n’ roll career.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Foo Fighters

Today we are celebrating the birthday of Dave Grohl, singer and drummer for Nirvana, frontman for Foo Fighters, and near-drummer for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. (It worked out for all. Grohl got to start a great new band; the Heartbreakers got the amazing Steve Ferrone on drums.) Today we put Dave Grohl and The Foos in the spotlight.

It’s Sunday and Linda Ronstadt Owns Our Album of The Week, We Have Chosen Petty’s Top 50 Songs, and Truffle Brings Up The Rear With a Great Live Performance, January 10, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We have a great line-up for you today, including our new Album of The Week and our first attempt to list Tom Petty’s Top 50 songs.

Tom Petty’s music will stand the test of time.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: We Ran by Linda Ronstadt NEW!

By 1998, when this album was released, Linda Ronstadt was an accomplished veteran of the music scene, and certainly a pioneer for all women in the male-oriented rock world who had more than made her mark. As such, she was at the stage of her career where she could make anything she wanted. And she did. This was effectively her final rock n’ roll album, interpreting songs by the likes of Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Bruce Springsteen, and Naomi Neville. Neville’s Ruler of My Heart and Hiatt’s We Ran were the hooks for me.

As for the musicians who contributed to this album? They were the best of the best: Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench of The Heartbreakers, Bernie Leadon (formerly of The Eagles), drummer Russ Kunkel, and guitarists Andy Fairweather Low, Waddy Wachtel, and Bob Glaub.

This is probably her most eclectic album ever, and one of my favorites.

2:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: Tom Petty’s Top 50 Songs NEW!

Someone sent me an email about two months ago challenging me to do this, so I finally found some time to make it happen. This includes Petty’s solo work, and his work with The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, and The Traveling Wilburys. It’s my Top 50. For now. This is subject to change without notice, by the way.

7:00 p.m. Truffle Live at The House of Haze, Farmington, New Hampshire, October 18, 2020

We are giving some airtime here to a great local band whose music embodies everything we play here on #BecomeUngovernable Radio. In case you missed this airing the first time around, we are rerunning it this evening, and we will be adding their collection to our standard rotation over the next few weeks.

Who the hell knows what it takes to get people to tune in. At least here in America, where they appear to be a bit slow on the uptake on many issues. Perhaps they prefer endless talk, commercials or paying for what they used to get for free (shades of Tom Petty’s The Last DJ. Hey, Hey, Hey).

This playlist is about just over 2.5 hours and features The Mamas & The Papas, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Doors, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, and more!

The final airing of Joan Baez’s brillian debut album, recorded when she was just nineteen. Get in on it now. It will be gone tomorrow when you wake up!

7:00 p.m. Elvis Presley: The Sun Sessions

We’re celebrating Elvis Presley’s birthday a day late. That’s usually how it goes around here. We do our best, but my multiple personalities have their limits. Today, we’re playing his songs from The Sun Sessions, recorded at Sun Studios during 1954 and 1955. It’s produced by Sam Phillips, owner of Sun Records, who gave Elvis his start, and includes one of the greatest (and some people argue, the first) rock n’ roll songs ever, That’s All Right. Happy Birthday, Elvis.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Winterland, October 22, 1978 NEW!

We made it through last year for 52 weeks with no repeats. And we intend to attempt the same here. Let’s face it. It should not be difficult. The Dead played Winterland alone 48 times. This is just one of them. Enjoy, Deadheads.

Tom Petty Shares His Record Collection, Lukas Nelson & POTR are In the Spotlight, and Joan Baez Owns Our Album of The Week, Sunday, January 3, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! How the hell are you this fine Sunday? We have a great line-up today sprinkled in all that Open Stream which, we are again expanding as we speak (or as I write).

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Joan Baez by Joan Baez NEW!

This album has great historical significance to music. In 2015, the album was placed into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress for special recognition and preservation as one of the sound recordings in over 130 years of recording history that has “cultural, artistic and/or historical significance to American society and the nation’s audio legacy” It was recorded in the summer of 1960 and released the same year. Later re-issues contained bonus tracks, but this is the original 13 songs and nothing more.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Peculiar Picks: The Best of The Buried Treasure Show NEW!

Tom Petty had a side gig. He was a DJ on The Buried Treasure Show, which debuted on Sirius XM’s Deep Tracks channel, then moved to Tom Petty Radio. Tom Petty shared not only some pretty great music (some of it buried and pretty obscure), but his knowledge about its history and how it influenced the influencers. Those of us who listen beyond the catchy tune stage consider this show a national treasure, and agree totally with the sentiment expressed in this article.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real

Yeah. He’s Willie’s boy. And he’s pretty damned good. POTR, as they are affectionately known, also has a side gig as Neil Young’s touring band. Can’t get a much better endorsement than that.

I have no clue what any of you are up to today but — whatever it is — you should have this station tuned in. After all, it’s Sunday Funday. And we’re really fun and won’t cost you a dime.
