12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Led Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin NEW!

Led Zeppelin IV was released by Atlantic Records on November 8, 1971, and was a massive critical and commercial success, shipping 37 million copies worldwide. All of the songs were written by the band, with the exception of the Memphis Minnie blues song, When The Levee Breaks.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume 1: Various Artists UPDATED!

Last time around, we gave you Volume 2; this time it’s the original volume, updated for your listening pleasure. This is basically 5+ hours of sixties open stream, no interruptions, no advertising. My Favorite Heartbreaker Live Performances, The Final Airing of our AOW, The Flying Burrito Brothers Live at The Avalon, and Live Dead Later, Saturday, December 12, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Here we are on our usual chock full Saturday, and it’s all good, as they say these days. Personally, I prefer, “It’s fucking mint.”

Yeah, baby. There is nobody like The Heartbreakers live and in person.

This isn’t a new playlist, but it has been updated over the past week, and we haven’t heard live Heartbreakers in a while, mostly because I try not to show favoritism when it comes to them, The Beatles, and Linda Ronstadt. It’s a struggle. Here we have my absolute favorite Heartbreaker live performances, and we’re simply not done yet. There will be other iterations of this playlist down the road.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Eli and The Thirteenth Confession by Laura Nyro

This is your last chance to hear this great album this week. Tomorrow, we move on to a new selection. Don’t mess this up, people.

7:00 p.m. The Flying Burrito Brothers Live at The Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, April 6, 1969 NEW!

This is the perfect early evening performance by the Gram Parsons version of the Flying Burrito Brothers. This was actually the opening act for The Grateful Dead that evening. We have this weeks’ Live Dead coming up a bit later!

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Berkeley Community Theater, Berkeley, California, April 22, 1986 NEW!

It’s our Saturday night constitution here in The Mermaid Lounge. This week’s Live Dead is from the Berkeley Community Center.

Good Morning, Music Lovers! This is my prototypical perfect programming day. The ladies dominate today, but we have The Band bringing up the rear later to close out the programming. (We do, however, return to Open Stream after; we are 24/7 baby; no interruptions.)

Laura Nyro has made many people famous because she was such a fucking amazing songwriter. But when she sings her songs herself, it’s amazing. She has a special place in our hearts here in The Mermaid Lounge.

3:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris, Live at The Orpheum Theater, Boston, MA, on The Western Wall Tour, October 1, 1999 NEW!

It is not often that you have two amazingly talented singers on stage together. To say that they sound like angels is a phrase that is often over-used, but not in this case. The singing would be enough for me, but hearing them talk about the history of some of their songs and introducing their amazing band is an added bonus. This is the reason I spend so much time “finding” music out there. It’s a lot of work but, when you find something like this, it makes it all worthwhile.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Band

The Beatles. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. The Band. My big three. They started out as Bob Dylan’s back-up band. Then they managed to forge a musical career of their own that is unrivaled in many ways. Tonight we close out the programming by putting them In The Spotlight.

I don’t know what you’re waiting for. We have some people from Denmark and Norway who have been on for three days solid now. We’ve recently added listeners from Argentina and the Russian Federation. Maybe people here just take this shit for granted. I feel sorry for you. Your lives must be empty if you don’t listen to music. And if you’re still paying for this stuff, your wallets are also empty.

I guess I could have come up with a better title for this playlist, but it was hard for me to describe the giant leap The Beatles took from Rubber Soul onward. It was gigantic. This was undoubtedly their most creative and experimental time as a musical group in their writing and in the studio. George Martin was no small part of that endeavor.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wreckless Abandon by The Dirty Knobs

Time is winding down on this week’s Album of The Week. We’ve got one more chance for you to acquaint yourselves with The Dirty Knobs before we move on to a brand new selection on Sunday!

The photo above isn’t the best, but good photos of this show are very hard to come by. I was there, and this was undoubtedly one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen Linda Ronstadt perform. She was helped by friend Valerie Carter, who also opened for her. You don’t get the opportunity to see two great singers on stage together very often. I, luckily, did. (By the way, if you’re not familiar with Valerie Carter, you should make it a point to become familiar. We love her here in The Mermaid Lounge.)

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With John Mayall, Mick Jagger & Jeff Beck; The Dirty Knobs Are Back With Our AOW, December 1, 2020

Good Morning, and welcome to December. The Shadow starts on Wednesday, but today we’ve got some Tuesday Bluesday music and Three-in-a Row’s lined up.

John Mayall is known as the Godfather of British Blues for a reason.

Today we’ve got all the Bluesbreakers recordings done for the BBC between 1965 and 1967. We are always on the hunt for new music. We’ve got places to go that I’m not even sure how we’ve found, but we’re back on the hunt for some authentic blues again. In the meantime, there’s a reason why John Mayall is known as the Godfather of British Blues. You’ll see.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wreckless Abandon by The Dirty Knobs

A great debut album worth the wait in the midst of this pestilence. It is in today’s pipeline and also now in our general rotation.

7:00 p.m. Mick Jagger & Jeff Beck Live at The Country Club, Reseda, CA, October 20, 1987

This is a short little soundboard interlude here with Mick Jagger and Jeff Beck. This was originally a session to record a promo; what ensues here is what happened in between takes, apparently. There is reportedly a longer version of this out there somewhere. I’m determined to find it. In the meantime, enjoy this one.

An Intro to The Dirty Knobs, We Celebrate The Life of George Harrison, and The Stones Live Later, Sunday, November 29, 2020

What was Mike Campbell’s side project is now Mike Campbell’s new band, and they’ve just released their first album. I’ve got to tell you, it’s really good. One review said it’s like listening to old friends, and I agree.

Which proves one thing: You can take the boy out of The Heartbreakers, but you can’t take The Heartbreakers out of the boy. It’s part of his DNA now, and we’re glad here in The Mermaid Lounge.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of George Harrison

From The Beatles to his solo career to The Traveling Wilburys. George Harrison was not only a mega-talent, but he was just a really good human being. But he wasn’t “the quiet Beatle” according to Mr. Petty. He was pretty damned funny.

George Harrison left this planet on this day in 2001. He was only 58 years old and I am sure he had so much more music left in him. Nevertheless, George left us a great musical history to remember him by. We will do so today.

Mick and the boys tear it up on stage in Toronto. It has been my personal experience that they are always a good time on stage.

America is really good at what it does. Call it soft rock; call it whatever you want. But America has made some very creative music. The albums Homecoming, Hat Trick, and Hideaway have some incredible music on them. Tune it in today’s Album of The Week to see what we mean.

Bob Dylan’s 2020 release about John F. Kennedy’s assassination was aired here when released, and added to the general rotation. Today, we will replay it at 10:00 p.m. on the 57th anniversary of JFK’s assassination.

Badfinger Live, Stephen Stills Says ‘Just Roll Tape,’ The Final Airing of Our AOW, and Live Dead on Saturday, November 21, 2020

Badfinger is the only bona fide hitmakers signed to The Apple Label (besides The Beatles, of course). These great live soundboard recordings at the BBC took place in June 1972 and August 1973.

Our final airing of this week’s featured album. Tomorrow when you wake up, we’ll do it all again with a new selection.

A planned Judy Collins recording session turns into an impromptu recording session for Stephen Stills as well. He says ‘just roll tape,’ and we say ‘just listen in.’
