Mid-Month Sundays Bring Our Sixties Rotation, and Led Zeppelin Owns the Album of The Week, December 13, 2020

It’s Sunday Funday here in The Mermaid Lounge. We’re mid-month, which puts one of my favorite playlists into the rotation!

Today it’s The Sixties Rotation, Volume One!

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Led Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin NEW!

Led Zeppelin IV was released by Atlantic Records on November 8, 1971, and was a massive critical and commercial success, shipping 37 million copies worldwide. All of the songs were written by the band, with the exception of the Memphis Minnie blues song, When The Levee Breaks.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume 1: Various Artists UPDATED!

Last time around, we gave you Volume 2; this time it’s the original volume, updated for your listening pleasure. This is basically 5+ hours of sixties open stream, no interruptions, no advertising. You can hear The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Petula Clark, Lulu, The Hollies, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Bobbie Gentry, Johnny Rivers, The Dave Clark Five, The Box Tops, Dusty Springfield, Mary Wells and many more!

This brings us up just about 8:00 p.m., when you’ll hear…more Open Stream. And that’s because we run 24/7 and our Streaming Mermaid is always on top of things. Get it together and join the rest of the planet at:

My Favorite Heartbreaker Live Performances, The Final Airing of our AOW, The Flying Burrito Brothers Live at The Avalon, and Live Dead Later, Saturday, December 12, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Here we are on our usual chock full Saturday, and it’s all good, as they say these days. Personally, I prefer, “It’s fucking mint.”

Yeah, baby. There is nobody like The Heartbreakers live and in person.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Deb’s Stream: The Best of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live UPDATED!

This isn’t a new playlist, but it has been updated over the past week, and we haven’t heard live Heartbreakers in a while, mostly because I try not to show favoritism when it comes to them, The Beatles, and Linda Ronstadt. It’s a struggle. Here we have my absolute favorite Heartbreaker live performances, and we’re simply not done yet. There will be other iterations of this playlist down the road.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Eli and The Thirteenth Confession by Laura Nyro

This is your last chance to hear this great album this week. Tomorrow, we move on to a new selection. Don’t mess this up, people.

7:00 p.m. The Flying Burrito Brothers Live at The Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, April 6, 1969 NEW!

This is the perfect early evening performance by the Gram Parsons version of the Flying Burrito Brothers. This was actually the opening act for The Grateful Dead that evening. We have this weeks’ Live Dead coming up a bit later!

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Berkeley Community Theater, Berkeley, California, April 22, 1986 NEW!

It’s our Saturday night constitution here in The Mermaid Lounge. This week’s Live Dead is from the Berkeley Community Center.

Tune in. Turn on. Drop out. That’s what I’d be doing if I had my choice. But alas, I don’t. I owe my soul to the company store. So, you enjoy yourselves on my behalf.

It’s A Great Day When You Have Harris & Ronstadt Live On Stage Together, Laura Nyro Owns the Album of The Week, and The Band Closes Out The Programming, Sunday, December 6, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! This is my prototypical perfect programming day. The ladies dominate today, but we have The Band bringing up the rear later to close out the programming. (We do, however, return to Open Stream after; we are 24/7 baby; no interruptions.)

Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris together. Today, we have their Boston concert from 1999 on The Western Wall tour.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of the Week: Eli and The Thirteenth Confession by Laura Nyro NEW!

Laura Nyro has made many people famous because she was such a fucking amazing songwriter. But when she sings her songs herself, it’s amazing. She has a special place in our hearts here in The Mermaid Lounge.

3:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris, Live at The Orpheum Theater, Boston, MA, on The Western Wall Tour, October 1, 1999 NEW!

It is not often that you have two amazingly talented singers on stage together. To say that they sound like angels is a phrase that is often over-used, but not in this case. The singing would be enough for me, but hearing them talk about the history of some of their songs and introducing their amazing band is an added bonus. This is the reason I spend so much time “finding” music out there. It’s a lot of work but, when you find something like this, it makes it all worthwhile.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Band

The Beatles. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. The Band. My big three. They started out as Bob Dylan’s back-up band. Then they managed to forge a musical career of their own that is unrivaled in many ways. Tonight we close out the programming by putting them In The Spotlight.

I don’t know what you’re waiting for. We have some people from Denmark and Norway who have been on for three days solid now. We’ve recently added listeners from Argentina and the Russian Federation. Maybe people here just take this shit for granted. I feel sorry for you. Your lives must be empty if you don’t listen to music. And if you’re still paying for this stuff, your wallets are also empty.

The British Are Coming! Our Album of The Week’s Final Airing, and “Live Dead” Later, Saturday, December 5, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s once again time for a visit from the bands and singers who brought you The British Invasion, one of the absolute best times in all of music. We have it here today from The Mermaid Lounge.

The Rolling Stones.

Here’s today’s line-up!

11:00 a.m. The British Invasion: Various Artists

We’ve got more than five hours of some of the best music on the planet, uninterrupted save for a couple of station ID’s along the way. Hear The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Petula Clark, Lulu, Dusty Springfield, The Kinks, The Who, The Zombies, The Dave Clark Five, Gerry & The Pacemakers, and many more.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wreckless Abandon by The Dirty Knobs

We bid a fond farewell to Mike Campbell and his band as this is our final airing for this cycle. Don’t miss it. It is indeed like hearing old friends. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new Album of The Week.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Capitol Center, Landover, Maryland, September 25, 1976 (aka, Dick’s Picks Volume 20) NEW!

Yet another brand new outing from the world’s preeminent jam band, this one from The Capitol Center in Landover.

Tune us in, people. This is a solid day of programming guaranteed to please. No advertising. No political speeches. No news to speak of except for music news. No credit card or personal information required. Just click the damned link below, already.

More From The Beatles, Album of The Week, and Linda Ronstadt Live in My Town on Thursday, December 3, 2020

It’s another great day of music from The Mermaid Lounge: Just enough programming and plenty of Open Stream as we chug on toward a weekend of new music playlists!

Linda Ronstadt performs on stage in Boston with Valerie Carter (1995).

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Beatles: The Transformation

I guess I could have come up with a better title for this playlist, but it was hard for me to describe the giant leap The Beatles took from Rubber Soul onward. It was gigantic. This was undoubtedly their most creative and experimental time as a musical group in their writing and in the studio. George Martin was no small part of that endeavor.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wreckless Abandon by The Dirty Knobs

Time is winding down on this week’s Album of The Week. We’ve got one more chance for you to acquaint yourselves with The Dirty Knobs before we move on to a brand new selection on Sunday!

7:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at The Orpheum Theatre, Boston, MA, May 14, 1995

The photo above isn’t the best, but good photos of this show are very hard to come by. I was there, and this was undoubtedly one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen Linda Ronstadt perform. She was helped by friend Valerie Carter, who also opened for her. You don’t get the opportunity to see two great singers on stage together very often. I, luckily, did. (By the way, if you’re not familiar with Valerie Carter, you should make it a point to become familiar. We love her here in The Mermaid Lounge.)

Tune us in. Grease your wheels. This weekend we’ve got some brand new playlists coming up, along with some new live shows. We’ve been out there hunting, and all of this will carry over into the winter of our discontent. Hopefully, #BecomeUngovernable Radio can be an oasis in this vast wasteland.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With John Mayall, Mick Jagger & Jeff Beck; The Dirty Knobs Are Back With Our AOW, December 1, 2020

Good Morning, and welcome to December. The Shadow starts on Wednesday, but today we’ve got some Tuesday Bluesday music and Three-in-a Row’s lined up.

John Mayall is known as the Godfather of British Blues for a reason.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers Live at The BBC (1965-1967)

Today we’ve got all the Bluesbreakers recordings done for the BBC between 1965 and 1967. We are always on the hunt for new music. We’ve got places to go that I’m not even sure how we’ve found, but we’re back on the hunt for some authentic blues again. In the meantime, there’s a reason why John Mayall is known as the Godfather of British Blues. You’ll see.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wreckless Abandon by The Dirty Knobs

A great debut album worth the wait in the midst of this pestilence. It is in today’s pipeline and also now in our general rotation.

7:00 p.m. Mick Jagger & Jeff Beck Live at The Country Club, Reseda, CA, October 20, 1987

This is a short little soundboard interlude here with Mick Jagger and Jeff Beck. This was originally a session to record a promo; what ensues here is what happened in between takes, apparently. There is reportedly a longer version of this out there somewhere. I’m determined to find it. In the meantime, enjoy this one.

The rest of the day is Open Stream with some Three-in-a-Rows tossed in for good measure. Enjoy your day!

An Intro to The Dirty Knobs, We Celebrate The Life of George Harrison, and The Stones Live Later, Sunday, November 29, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve got a damned good line-up today here from The Mermaid Lounge! You ought to be listening to us. Seriously.

Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs. You can take the boy out of The Heartbreakers, but you can’t take The Heartbreakers out of the boy.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Wreckless Abandon by The Dirty Knobs NEW!

What was Mike Campbell’s side project is now Mike Campbell’s new band, and they’ve just released their first album. I’ve got to tell you, it’s really good. One review said it’s like listening to old friends, and I agree.

Which proves one thing: You can take the boy out of The Heartbreakers, but you can’t take The Heartbreakers out of the boy. It’s part of his DNA now, and we’re glad here in The Mermaid Lounge.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of George Harrison

From The Beatles to his solo career to The Traveling Wilburys. George Harrison was not only a mega-talent, but he was just a really good human being. But he wasn’t “the quiet Beatle” according to Mr. Petty. He was pretty damned funny.

George Harrison left this planet on this day in 2001. He was only 58 years old and I am sure he had so much more music left in him. Nevertheless, George left us a great musical history to remember him by. We will do so today.

7:00 p.m. The Rolling Stones Live At Palais Royale, Toronto, August 16, 2002

Mick and the boys tear it up on stage in Toronto. It has been my personal experience that they are always a good time on stage.

It’s Sunday. Someone once said it’s a day of rest, so just tune us in and chill. All you’ve got to do is click the link below.

Our Thanksgiving Tradition This Morning, Some R & B This Afternoon; Our Album of The Week and The Kinks Later, November 26, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Here we are on a rainy Thanksgiving with not a damned obligation except great music. And we’re happy about that.

Arlo Guthrie and his fellow hippies at Thanksgiving Dinner at the church that would inspire the song, Alice’s Restaurant, 1969.

Here’s today’s Turkey Day line-up:

10:00 a.m. Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant, Our Thanksgiving Tradition!

If you read the story in our college blog entry today, you know the back story. If you haven’t read it yet, you can — as they say — read all about it here.

2:00 p.m. DJ’s Choice: My Favorite R & B Stream

Every once in a while, I am inspired to string a collection of songs together when I am up late at night. The night I created this was such a night. I hope you enjoy it.

5:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Homecoming by America

We’re winding down on America’s Homecoming album, just a really excellent album. There will be one more airing after today before we choose our new AOW on Sunday.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Kinks

When Ray and Dave Davies weren’t beating the living shit out of each other backstage (and sometimes on stage), they were making some of the best music on the planet. And for that, we are thankful.

Tune in. Turn on. And shovel in that Thanksgiving turkey, if you are so inclined. But whatever you do today, make sure you tune us in.

“Homecoming” is Our Album of The Week, Laura Nyro is In The Spotlight, and The Psychedelic Express Rolls Through, Sunday, November 22, 2020

How are we this fine morning, Music Lovers? It’s Sunday, a day of rest. It’s the perfect day to tune in, turn on, and drop out. Who said that?

Laura Nyro, one of the most amazing songwriters of all time.

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Homecoming by America NEW!

Here we go, everybody claiming this is a “surprise” pick for me. I remember in my younger days people being surprised that I liked much of America’s music. Hey, I’ve never been a head-banger. In fact, you don’t hear that stuff on this station, for the most part.

America is really good at what it does. Call it soft rock; call it whatever you want. But America has made some very creative music. The albums Homecoming, Hat Trick, and Hideaway have some incredible music on them. Tune it in today’s Album of The Week to see what we mean.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Laura Nyro

Laura Nyro’s contribution to popular music is undeniable. She’s a brilliant songwriter, having delivered Wedding Bell Blues, Stoned Soul Picnic, Eli’s Coming, and many other songs. Most have been hits for other people, but Laura Nyro singing them is something to behold. Today, we put her In The Spotlight.

7:00 p.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

Some of the best mind-bending tunes on the planet from The Electric Prunes, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Cream, The Doors, Pink Floyd, and others!

10:00 p.m. Murder Most Foul by Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan’s 2020 release about John F. Kennedy’s assassination was aired here when released, and added to the general rotation. Today, we will replay it at 10:00 p.m. on the 57th anniversary of JFK’s assassination.

Here’s what you’ve got to do: Tune us in. This is the easiest thing on the planet to do. Open a tab and click the link at the bottom of this blog entry. No lie. That’s all, folks. We’re not lying.

Badfinger Live, Stephen Stills Says ‘Just Roll Tape,’ The Final Airing of Our AOW, and Live Dead on Saturday, November 21, 2020

It’s Saturday, Music Lovers, and it’s our busiest programming day of the week. We have some excellent stuff today.

After a Judy Collins recording session in 1968, Stephen Stills took the opportunity to make some new songs of his own.

Here’s your Saturday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Badfinger Live at The BBC 1972/1973

Badfinger is the only bona fide hitmakers signed to The Apple Label (besides The Beatles, of course). These great live soundboard recordings at the BBC took place in June 1972 and August 1973.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Main Refrain by Wendy Waldman

Our final airing of this week’s featured album. Tomorrow when you wake up, we’ll do it all again with a new selection.

7:00 p.m. Stephen Stills: Just Roll Tape, April 26, 1968

A planned Judy Collins recording session turns into an impromptu recording session for Stephen Stills as well. He says ‘just roll tape,’ and we say ‘just listen in.’

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium, Washington, D.C., July 6, 1986 NEW!

The Dead are live once again from The Mermaid Lounge with a 1986 performance at RFK Stadium. No two shows alike, my music lovers.

This is Saturday, and an excellent day to find out what we’re all about. Join your friends around the globe and tune us in.
