Innervisions was singer, songwriter and musician Stevie Wonder’s sixteenth studio album, and it is largely viewed as his transition from ‘Little’ Stevie Wonder to a more mature, socially conscious musician. It was released on August 3, 1973 on the Tamla label (a subsidiary of Motown). At the 16th Grammy Awards it won for Best Album of The Year, and Living For The City won for Best R&B Song. Good Morning, Music Lovers! We continue our psychedelic album parade today with The Temptations and take a trip across the pond with ‘The British Are Coming,” an EP with music from the British Invasion and beyond!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Cloud Nine by The Temptations NEW!

Released in 1969, this album was a turning point for both Motown and The Temptations as they not only added singer Dennis Edwards to replace the departing David Ruffin, and began a partnership with visionary writer-producer Norman Whitfield. Although at least half of the album is in the traditional Temptations R & B style, they began their journey into Psychedelic Soul with the song Cloud Nine and it’s great wah-wah guitar intro courtesy of Dennis Coffey, and especially with Runaway Child, Running Wild.

We go back to the sixties British Invasion here, but we do not stop there as we include music from our friends across the pond that spans a couple more generations (we’re very selective, however). Today we give you Shawn Colvin’s debut album, released on October 17, 1989. Not only did it help establish Colvin as a folk force to be reckoned with, but it brought her the Grammy for the Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1991. She either wrote or co-wrote every song on the album, and had help from folks like Bruce Hornsby, Suzanne Vega, and Rick Marotta, who also took a turn as Linda Ronstadt’s drummer. It’s a keeper and it makes its Mermaid Lounge debut today at 11:00 a.m.

Our friends from Across the Pond are back with some great music from The British Invasion and beyond. Our Album of The Week this week is the fifth studio album by The Grateful Dead, American Beauty, which was released in 1970. It was born during a prolific composition spell between Jerry Garcia and Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. It would go from Gold to Platinum and to Double-Platinum status by 2001 and was listed as album number 215 on Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Albums of All Time by 2020. It spent 19 weeks on the Billboard 200 charts in 1970.

This is not a new performance, but a requested repeat. We’ve had a few people ask for this one over the past month or so. The last time we played it was back in 2020, so it’s like new. Many consider this to be the finest live Grateful Dead performance ever. I don’t know how you choose one out of the many they’ve had over the years, but here it is!

It’s Saturday and the first full day of the weekend. What could be better than adding some great music to the mix, free of charge, with no mouthy DJs and no commercial interruption? Come on. You know you want to.
