We’re One Day From the Weekend and We Feature Our Final Airing of Shawn Colvin as Our Singer-Songwriter, We Have Our ‘In Your Dreams’ EP, and We Put Dusty Springfield In the Spotlight Later, Friday, January 27, 2023

Hell, music lovers, we’re almost at the end of the first month of the new year and we’re one day away from the weekend! We’ve got a great lineup for you today with our ‘In Your Dreams’ EP sandwiched in between two of our favorite Mermaid Lounge women.

Here’s Friday’s musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Shawn Colvin FINAL AIRING!

Today is the final airing of Shawn Colvin as this week’s featured singer-songwriter, a woman who turned the folk music genre on its head with her 1998 release A Few Small Repairs and her double-winning Grammy hit Sunny Came Home. I never had the pleasure of seeing Shawn Colvin live, but I did see her in a great multi-artist concert joining friends Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, David Lindley and Bruce Hornsby back in the late 90’s. We’ll be airing that concert next week, in fact.

12:00 p.m. In Your Dreams: Various Artists

Dreams are a funny thing. I almost never remember mine unless they are the craziest. Yet, they are certainly the subject of some great music. You’ll hear the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Aerosmith, Crowded House, the Moody Blues, Van Morrison, The Eurythmics, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Nanci Griffith, The Electric Prunes, Fleetwood Mac, Roy Orbison, The Mamas & The Papas, Jimmy Buffett, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Allman Brothers Band, Supertramp, Randy Newman, Aretha Franklin, Widespread Panic, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, The Youngbloods, Jimmy Ruffin, Jackson Browne, Mudcrutch, Patsy Cline, Joe Walsh, Bruce Springsteen, k.d. lang, Dusty Springfield and more!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Dusty Springfield

British-born Dusty Springfield is a Mermaid Lounge favorite. Her sultry mezzo-soprano voice is immediately recognizable and she was one of the most popular female singers of the sixties. Her repertoire encompassed blue-eyed soul, pop, country, jazz and soulful ballads. This is a great playlist.

We’re one day away from being ‘weekenders’ folks. If you’ve got an office, a free tab and a mouse, we can make your Friday a hell of a lot better. Just play us in the background. There’s no effort involved. We don’t ask for a subscription, a credit card or your name. Just click on the button below.

It’s Saturday and We’ve Got One Outgoing and One Incoming Singer-Songwriter, and Our Multi-Artist ‘The British Are Coming’ EP, November 26, 2022

Here we are again on Saturday. Seems weird this week with a Thursday holiday. I’m all discombobulated. But the good news is that I’m completely aware of what’s going on here musically. And it’s all great stuff.

Here’s today’s programming:

8:00 a.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Nanci Griffith

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Neil Young NEW!

Tonight we bring in the new featured singer-songwriter, Neil Young, undoubtedly a Mermaid Lounge favorite. He’s in very good standing here. The Mermaid herself is very fond. Some days we have to keep her from turning this into Neil Young Radio. We’ve got a great set list on tap for tonight.

10:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Everybody Knows by Stephen Stills & Judy Collins

To close it out, we’ve got the final airing of this week’s Album of The Week by Stills and Collins. We’ll have a new album ready to roll in the morning.

Before, in between and after we’ve got our great Wide Open Stream under the guidance of The Music Mermaid, and you know she has impeccable taste. We are free 24/7 and we’re never off the air. We do not clog up the music pipeline with commercial advertising, and your money (and credit cards) are no good here.

Tonight we put a great singer-songwriter In the Spotlight in Bill Withers, a guy who made some really great music in his career. We’re on for today, as we are every day. Although we do wish the heat would dissipate and make life livable again. It’s really just to hot for too many days on end. But we’re cool here in The Mermaid Lounge. Join us.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jackson Browne

It’s time to put Jackson Browne back In the Spotlight. It has been a while. Every time we hear this playlist we’re reminded why he’s considered one of the greatest song writers of all time.

7:00 p.m. Drivin’ Songs: Various Artists

And then, we close out the night with songs about driving. But it doesn’t stop there. Some of these songs may not actually be about driving, but they help you go just a little bit faster than you were originally planning. Hey, that’s why they’re driving songs. They are one of the best-selling groups of the 1960s, and songs like Sound of Silence, Mrs. Robinson, and Bridge Over Troubled Water reached number one on music charts worldwide. More than half a million people showed up in New York’s Central Park in 1981, which remains one of the most widely attended concerts in music history. What is not to love about these guys? They ‘ve made some of the best music on the planet, whether together or solo. But today, they are Simon & Garfunkel.

Great day to tune us in, folks, as is every day. We’ve got non-stop music, totally free of charge, 24/7. We don’t ask for a commitment of any kind, a credit card, or personal information. This is not a new performance, but a requested repeat. We’ve had a few people ask for this one over the past month or so. The last time we played it was back in 2020, so it’s like new. Many consider this to be the finest live Grateful Dead performance ever. I don’t know how you choose one out of the many they’ve had over the years, but here it is!

It’s Saturday and the first full day of the weekend. What could be better than adding some great music to the mix, free of charge, with no mouthy DJs and no commercial interruption? Come on. You know you want to.

Back to Monday With Fats Domino, The Moody Blues, and Our ‘By The Numbers’ Playlist Later, November 15, 2021

Good Morning, Folks! We’re back to Moan-Day all over again with a great line-up, including a couple of spotlight features, one brand new!

It’s no secret that The Fab Four were big time Fats Domino fans, and so are we! Today he’s In the Spotlight.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Fats Domino

Was the man from New Orleans the first to play rock n’ roll? I think that could be the case. This guy was making sounds nobody else was making back in the day. He was certainly a bona fide pioneer of the craft, of that there is no doubt. His first single, The Fat Man, is credited as the first rock n’ roll record and the first to sell more than a million copies. Between 1955 and 1960, Fats Domino had eleven Top 10 U.S. hits on the Billboard charts. He sold more than 65 million records during his groundbreaking career.

3:30 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Moody Blues NEW!

We have a couple of live performances of these guys, but we thought it was an appropriate time to put a spotlight feature together in light of Graeme Edge’s passing on November 12. He was their drummer and the last original band member. We bring you the best of the Moodies today.

7:00 p.m. By The Numbers: Various Artists

We thought it was about time to break this one out again. Here are some great songs with numbers in the title, lyrics, or both! You’ll hear James Taylor, The Mamas & The Papas, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Chicago, Three Dog Night, J.J. Cale, Mudcrutch, Alice Cooper, The Doors, Stevie Nicks, Shawn Colvin, Rosanne Cash, The Searchers, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Paul Simon, Wilson Pickett, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Johnny Rivers, The Byrds and more!

Listen, people. Monday’s a really busy day here in The Lounge. Lots of listeners start off our week. We’ve got the crowd from Germany, Denmark, Italy, Ireland, Canada, (Texas, shhh), Australia, Portugal, Spain and points beyond this morning. Some of these freaks have been on all night. Tune us in. Start your week off right.
