We Keep It Simple On Sunday With The Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man” as Our AOW and ‘The British Are Coming’ EP in the Afternoon, January 29, 2023

Good morning, Weekenders! You know we keep it pretty simple on Sundays here in The Mermaid Lounge with plenty of wide Open Stream and just a couple of (great) programming items.

Here’s your simple Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds NEW!

This is the debut album by this great band, released on June 21, 1965, and marked the debut of the signature guitar sound of Jim McGuinn’s 12-string Rickenbacker guitar and the band’s amazing harmonizing, a vocal approach of the late, great David Crosby who would carry that tradition on into Crosby, Stills & Nash later in his career. This album consists mainly of folk covers, many written by Bob Dylan including the title tune and originals co-written by Gene Clark. The album provided the first American challenge to the chart dominance of The Beatles and other British invasion bands. The Byrds would go on to influence others in the sixties as well as future generations of musicians, including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers who carried on the jangling sound of McGuinn’s 12-string Rickenbacker throughout their 40-year career. 10:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Everybody Knows by Stephen Stills & Judy Collins

To close it out, we’ve got the final airing of this week’s Album of The Week by Stills and Collins. We’ll have a new album ready to roll in the morning.

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Revelator by Tedeschi Trucks Band NEW!

Susan Tedeschi has been around for a while, and so has Derek Trucks. But they put it all together in 2011 with the debut album of their fine band, Revelator. If you like blues-rock, this is is where you should be, people. Recorded in Susan and Derek’s Swamp Raga Studios in Jacksonville, Florida, the band shows that they are more than just a great ‘live’ band. Co-produced by Derek Trucks and producer/engineer Jim Scott, Revelator went on to with the Best Blues Album at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, and Derek Trucks has established himself as one of the finest guitar players on the planet. George Harrison’s birthday was on February 25. We may be a bit late here in The Mermaid Lounge on birthdays but we’re never a dollar short. We play Harrison’s best stuff as the lead guitarist of The Beatles, as Nelson Wilbury, and from his solo efforts. Happy Birthday, George.

I personally have a love-hate relationship with EJ, preferring his earlier works to the stuff he made later in his career. When you begin a long-term run in Vegas, you know it’s time to hang them up. I continue to believe this is one of Elton John’s finest albums, if not his absolute best. I have liked various songs here and there since the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album, but nothing has knocked my socks off since then. Regardless, this album belongs on our Album of The Week radar without a doubt.

Serendipity has once again found its way into my off-the-cuff programming and given us an All-British Sunday. That can only mean good things. You’ll remember our Music Festival Wednesday this week we talked about Summer Jam in 1973 at Watkins Glen. The bands were The Allman Brothers Band, The Band, and The Grateful Dead. We’re still searching for a decent recording of the entire event, but we’ve got the next best thing. This is the most-attended music event in known history, and you got all three bands for a mere $10. Are you kidding me?

This recording of The Grateful Dead (soundboard, so decent quality) is the closest we come since both The Allman Brothers Band and The Band join them on stage toward the end of their set. We hope you enjoy, and we will continue our search.

This is one band that should not ever be forgotten. Formed in the early sixties in Newcastle upon Tyne, the band is considered a British R & B band, but they managed to toss in plenty of rock and psychedelic music as well. They moved to London in 1964 after hitting the big time. Eric Burdon is one badass vocalist.

7:00 p.m. The Summer of Love, Volume 3: Various Artists

We took a day off from this series yesterday, but we bring it back to close it out today. It features Vanilla Fudge, Lulu, Wilson Pickett, The Association, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Doors, The Beatles, The Bee Gees, Donovan, Jackie Wilson, The Youngbloods and more!

The pre-disco Bee Gees were the bomb. But Saturday Night Fever killed it for me.

January 27, 1956: Elvis Presley made his TV debut on The Dorsey Brothers Stage Show where he sang Blue Suede Shoes and Heartbreak Hotel.

January 27, 1965: The Moody Blues reached #1 in the UK with Go Now.

Also on this day, The Who made their UK television debut when they appeared on Ready, Steady, Go! to promote their single, I Can’t Explain.

January 27, 1967: The Four Tops performed at the Royal Albert Hall.

January 27, 1971: The Bee Gees recorded How Can You Mend A Broken Heart at International Broadcasting Company Studios in London.

January 27, 1974: Paul McCartney & Wings released the song Jet.

January 27, 1977: Pink Floyd’s tenth studio album, Animals, entered the UK charts at #2.

January 27, 1978: Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours LP goes to #1 on the UK Album chart.
