It’s hard to believe that Bob Marley has been gone for 41 years, but he has. He passed on May 11, 1979. Tonight, we pay tribute to the man and the band that put Reggae on the map for so many people.

While Bob Dylan was in Nashville recording his Nashville Skyline album, he and Johnny Cash decided to get together to record some music. Only one of those songs made it to Nashville Skyline. It was Girl From The North Country. The others were released much later. We have those recordings here for you today.
5:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Timeless, An All-Star Tribute to Hank Williams NEW!
This is one sweet album of all-stars paying their respects to a counry legend, Hank Williams, Sr. There are a number of memorable performances here, especially from Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris. However, the one that stands out for me is Tom Petty’s version of You’re Gonna’ Change (Or I’m A Gonna’ Leave). Listen for it. Other contributors include Mark Knopfler, Shery Crow, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams III, and Johnny Cash.

January 17, 1963: The Beatles played their usual lunchtime gig at The Cavern Club, and then at the Majestic Ballroom in Birkenhead in the evening. The Majestic tickets all sold in advance. With literally hundreds of fans turned away, it was definitely time to look for a bigger venue.
January 17, 1964: The Rolling Stones released their first EP, which included You Better Move On, Poison Ivy, Bye Bye Johnny, and Money.
January 17, 1966: The Turtles released the song You Baby on this day. By the way, The Turtles were a great little band.
January 17, 1967:The Daily Mail ran a story about a local council survey finding 4,000 holes in the road in Lanashire, inspiring John Lennon’s contribution to the Beatles’ amazing A Day In The Life.
Also on this day, the Jimi Hendrix Experience recored a session for Radio Luxembourg’s Ready Steady Radio. The band ran up a $6.21 bar bill which they could not afford to pay. That would change soon.
January 17, 1970: The Doors performed the first of several concerts at the Felt Forum in New York City.
Also on this day, Led Zeppelin II would take over the #1 Album spot from Abbey Road after an 11-week run.
January 17, 1972: Neil Young released the great single Heart of Gold, with friends Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor singing background vocals.
Meanwhile, Paul Simon released his hit Mother and Child Reunion.
And a section of Highway 51 in South Memphis, Tennessee, was renamed Elvis Presley Boulevard. It was intended to be the entire road, but a church objected to their section being named after Elvis the Pelvis. No sense of humor.
January 17, 1974: Joni Mitchell’s amazing album, Court and Spark, was released on this day.
Bob Dylan also released Planet Waves on this day.
January 17, 1975: Bob Dylan released another great album on this day a year later called Blood On The Tracks.

January 17, 1927: The amazing Eartha Kitt was born on this day in North, South Carolina.
January 17, 1949: Mick Taylor, guitarist for both John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and the Rolling Stones, was born in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England.
January 17, 1955: Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Steve Earle was born in Fort Monroe, Virginia. Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Gretchen Peters, and Shawn Colvin have covered his tunes.

December 30, 1962: The Chiffons released the single He’s So Fine.
December 30, 1965: The Who, The Hollies, The Kinks, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Manfred Mann, and Georgie Fame performed on the popular TV show, Shindig.
December 30, 1967: The Beatles were still tearing up the charts. Their new album release, Magical Mystery Tour, climed from #157 to #4 in one week.
As if that wasn’t enough, The Beatles also had their 51st hit, their 25th Top 10 song in four years, and 15th #1 with the song Hello Goodbye.
December 30, 1968: The Turtles released the single You Showed Me.
December 30, 1969: Santana released the single Evil Ways.
December 30, 1972:Seventh Sojurn by the Moody Blues remained at the #1 position on the Album chart for a fourth week.
Also on this day, Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina cracked the Top 10 with Your Mama Don’t Dance.
December 30, 1974: Bob Dylan recorded Tangled Up in Blue (a personal all-time favorite), Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, and If You See Her, Say Hello.
December 30, 1979: Emerson, Lake & Palmer announced their break up.
Born On This Day
December 30, 1928: R & B and Rock n’ Roll icon Bo Diddley (vocalist, guitarist, songwriter) was born Ellas Otha Bates (add McDaniels at the end from his adoptive family) in McComb, Mississippi. He grew up on the South Side of Chicago where he and his friends sang on street corners. Rumor has it that his nickname, Bo Diddley came from the diddley bow, a one-stringed African guitar popular in the Mississippi Delta region.
December 30, 1931: Country singer Skeeter Davis was born Mary Frances Penick in Dry Ridge, Kentucky. She is actually best known for her crossover hit, The End Of The World.
December 30, 1934: Del Shannon (Runaway) was born Charles Weedon Westover in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
December 30, 1937: Bluegrass, folk, and country multi-instrumentalist and singer John Hartford was born in New York City.
December 30, 1937: Folk singer-songwriter Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul & Mary) was born in Baltimore, Maryland.
December 30, 1939: R & B singer Kim Weston was born Agatha Nathalia Weston in Detroit, Michigan. She would sign with Motown in 1961.
December 30, 1939: Felix Pappalardi, bassist and vocalist for Mountain, was born in The Bronx, New York.
December 30, 1940: Punk rock queen Patti Smith was born in Chicago.
