And yes, everybody knows that the two were a “thing” in 1968 into 1969, and that Stephen Stills wrote songs about her, namely Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Judy. In spite of the fact that Stills has played on several of Collins’ songs, they never made an album together or toured together until 2017, with the release of this collaboration. We’ve got it for you this week.

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got an eclectic programming day planned for you today, starting with our great Album of The Week, then moving into our very first Sixties Rotation. We close out later with our Reggae selection.

10:00 a.m. Album of The Week: The Union by Elton John and Leon Russell NEW!

Any album with these two guys in collaboration can only be called a tour de force. Released in 2010, the album was produced by the great T. Bone Burnett (who also contributes on electric guitar). Others who helped out include Booker T. Jones (Hammond B-3), Neil Young (vocals), Robert Randolph (pedal steel guitar), and Brian Wilson (vocal harmonies). It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and was listed at No. 3 on Rolling Stone’s 30 Best Albums of 2010.

1:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

We’ve got just over five hours of uninterrupted sixties music coming your way in the early afternoon. This particular rotation focuses on the early-to-mid years of the decade, although I can’t guarantee we don’t slip some stuff in from later in the decade. I may have been stoned when I made it. 8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Peter Tosh NEW!

Peter Tosh has a long, storied musical history. Abandoned by his parents and shuffled among his relatives, he eventually became a self-taught singer, songwriter and musician who was a critical part of The Wailers. He eventually met Robert Nesta Marley (THE Bob Marley) and Neville O’Reilly Livingston (Bunny Wailer). They started singing together in 1962 and the rest is history. He wrote several of the Wailers hit songs including Get Up, Stand Up, 400 Years, and No Sympathy. After the Wailers, Peter Tosh went on to a successful solo career starting with his album, Legalize It. Today, we put Reggae legend Peter Tosh In the Spotlight.

Here we are again. Another Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge, and a perfect day to acquaint yourselves with our special brand of radio. Yep. It’s true. You can’t create “custom” playlists here. Emmylou Harris’ fourth studio album is truly a thing of beauty. It is absolutely one of my all-time favorite albums with not one singular inferior song from start to finish. It was her second consecutive number one country album on the Billboard charts. She sings the songs of Gram Parsons, Chuck Berry, the Louvins, Rodney Crowell, Susanna Clark, for starters. The album also includes the cover of Townes Van Zandt’s haunting Pancho & Lefty which, subsequently, would become his best-known composition. You couldn’t ask for a better bunch of artists for help, with Nicolette Larson (duet vocals), Dolly Parton, and Fayssoux Starling providing duet and backing vocals, and a laundry list of brilliant musicians including members of The Hot Band, Albert Lee and James Burton on electric guitars, Hank DiVito on pedal steel, Glen D. Hardin on keyboards, and more. Just wow.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Saturate Before Using by Jackson Browne NEW!

Funny factoid: The album is mistakenly called Saturate Before Using because the cover design was made to look like a water bag. It was intended to be Jackson Browne. At the time of its recording Jackson did not have a record contract, then he sent a recording of Jamaica Say You Will to David Geffen and he began hunting. He started his own record label, Asylum, and signed Browne to a contract (along with many others, including Linda Ronstadt). This brilliant album is Browne’s debut, and birthed two hit singles, Doctor My Eyes and Rock Me On The Water. Jackson Browne is now considered one of the legendary singer-songwriters of his generation, residing in both the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume One: Various Artists

Yes, there is a difference between volume one and volume two. This volume focuses more on the earlier part of the sixties, although there is some crossover on both and we won’t deny that. It was done purposely. On this volume you’ll hear The Beatles, Mary Wells, Del Shannon, The Searchers, Carole King, Harry Nilsson, The Dave Clark Five, Johnny Rivers, The Box Tops, Dusty Springfield, The Yardbirds, Blues Image, Jimmy Ruffin, The Supremes, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston, Simon & Garfunkel and many more. The Trips Festival, held in 1966, was instrumental in the cultural development of psychedelic music.

Here’s your lesson for today:

January 21, 1959: The Kingston Trio, key to folk music becoming a staple in America, won a Gold record for Tom Dooley.

January 21, 1961: The great Del Shannon recorded the song Runaway, which will top the charts in America by April.

January 21, 1963: The Beatles made their third appearance on Radio Luxembourg’s program The Friday Spectacular, where they performed Please Please Me and Ask Me Why.

January 21, 1964: Peter & Gordon recorded the Lennon-McCartney tune A World Without Love, which goes to #1 in the UK by June 1965. Down the road during the 70s, Peter Asher will become Linda Ronstadt’s producer and manager, and helps launch her amazing career.

January 21, 1965: More than 3,000 fans greet The Rolling Stones and Roy Orbison at Sydney Airport when they arrive for a 16-date tour of Australia and New Zealand.

January 21, 1966: The first Trips Festival, a three-day event, begins at the Longshoreman’s Hall in San Francisco. It’s a landmark event in the evolution of psychedelic music and the hippie movement. Produced by Ken Kesey, Ramon Sender, and Stewart Brand, ten thousand people show up to see The Grateful Dead, Big Brother & The Holding Company, and The Jefferson Airplane. Pretty sure there was LSD in the punch.

January 21, 1968: Jimi Hendrix recorded Bob Dylan’s All Along The Watchtower at Olympia Studios in London. Rolling Stone Brian Jones (percussion) and Traffic’s Dave Mason (12-string guitar) play on the session.

January 21, 1983: Allman Brothers Band bassist Lamar Williams died of lung cancer at the age of 34. He joined the band in 1972, and replaced the deceased Berry Oakley. His doctors suspect he contracted the disease from exposure to Agent Orange during his Vietnam service.

January 21, 1984: The great soul singer Jackie Wilson died at the age of 49 after suffering a massive heart attack while performing at the Latin Casino in New Jersey. He fell head first to the stage while singing Lonely Teardrops, suffered brain damage, and remained in a coma for eight years until his death.

Born On This Day

January 21, 1941: Richie Havens, the great folk singer who appeared at the Woodstock, Newport, and Isle of Wight Festivals, was born in Brooklyn, New York.

January 21, 1942: Edwin Starr, soul singer who recorded the great songs War and Twenty-Five Miles, was born in Nashville, Tennessee.

January 21, 1947: Jim Ibbotson, who played guitar, keyboards, drums, and accordion for the very underrated Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, was born somewhere in the United States but nobody can seem to figure out where the fuck it was.
