11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Brother Johnny by Edgar Winter NEW!

Edgar Winter’s heartfelt 17-song tribute to his brother, killer bluesman Johnny Winter, garnered him a 2023 Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album just this past week at the age of 76. The Winter brothers are legends in the classic rock arena and, along with Bonnie Raitt (who won this year at the age of 73), just go to prove that the generation of musicians who inspired this radio station have real staying power.

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

At mid-afternoon, we turn the whole deal over to the women of music to take us into the evening hours. Back in 1987, B. B. King and his friends decided to make a ‘live’ blues album as they were recorded at the Ebony Showcase Theater in L.A. His friends included blues greats like Etta James, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and several more. We bring this great album to you today!

One of our absolute favorite days is the one where the women of music take over the airwaves here for several hours of music that encompasses all musical styles (there are some exclusions but we don’t need to list them if you’re a listener). To this day, the women of music get the short end of the stick on many radio stations, but not this one. The Beatles loved to name drop as you will see. They invented characters like Mr. Kite, Maxwell of silver hammer fame, Lucy who floated around the sky with diamonds. You’ll also hear about the man in the mack, a barber on Penny Lane, Prudence (who was actually Mia Farrow’s sister), Prime Minister Harold Wilson, and mother Mary. This playlist has recently been expanded and updated, so give it a listen!

We aired the first volume of this a couple weeks ago, so it’s only fitting we air the second half. 7:00 p.m. Neil Young Live at The Bottom Line, New York City, May 16, 1974 NEW!

This was a “surprise” live performance by Young and it was recorded and broadcast on WNEW-FM in New York. It was originally only a fan-recorded event, but it was eventually officially released in 2017. When the release came out, there were two songs that were also live performances but not at this venue. We have also included those live songs here and they are the last two songs in this set. Enjoy. Neil Young is always a treat in our book.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama by Janis Joplin NEW!

Janis gets a spin for this week with her very first and only solo album released during her lifetime on September 11, 1969. This is the album she recorded right after leaving Big Brother & The Holding Company. She enlisted Sam Andrews, guitarist for Big Brother, to help with the project, as well as the Kozmic Blues Band. She also added a brass and horn section, something Big Brother would not allow when she was with them. This album was a departure from her psychedelic rock days as it was much more R & B- and blues-driven. This is the expanded 1999 release with ‘live’ tunes from Woodstock included and with a cover of Dylan’s Dear Landlord, with some new lyrics and a new arrangement by Joplin.

Good Morning, Psychedelic Music Lovers! We’ll delve into the world of psychedelic music over the next few weeks with our Album of The Week. We start it off with Country Joe & The Fish!

Today we take a mind-expanding trip into psychedelic music!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Electric Music For the Mind and Body by Country Joe & The Fish NEW!

Country Joe & The Fish’s debut album was released in May of 1967, and was one of the very first psychedelic music albums to come out of San Francisco. We include the write up from DiscoverMusic below:

An early 1967 release, Country Joe And The Fish’s debut album opened up all kinds of possibilities: heady jams, poetic ballads, free-form ragas and even a taste of political satire. Because Joe McDonald was a songwriter first, the whole album is wrapped in a tuneful package. The closing “Grace” is a romantic epic in honour of Grace Slick (Janis Joplin would get similar treatment on the follow-up album).

Songs from the LP made it to the airwaves of progressive radio stations like KSAN and KMPX in San Francisco, and I distinctly remember listening to Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine on Boston’s WMEX back in the day. I managed to catch Country Joe live at Boston Garden as well.

There is no question that we have two luminaries of the folk movement on this album as Joan Baez pays tribute to Bob Dylan. They first met in 1961 and collaborated on music for several years before becoming intimately involved. Even after the relationship ended they continued to make music together and have remained friends over the years. Dylan continues to tour, while Joan Baez has formally retired from the road. We will soon have Spotlight features for both.

It’s a day of rest, and there’s no better way to kick back than with some really great music. That’s what you get here. No commercial interruptions. No overly talkative DJs. Nope. Not here.
