We’ve Got Our ‘Seasons’ Multi-Artist Playlist, the Final Airing of Jackson Browne as our Singer-Songwriter, and a New Carly Simon Spotlight on Friday, January 6, 2023

Good Morning, Weekenders! Yes, it’s here: The Weekend, brought to you by The Labor Movement. And it’s going to be a great musical weekend indeed. There’s no time to lose as we begin today!

Here’s your Friday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Seasons: Various Artists

It’s supposed to be winter here in the Boston area, but it has been anything but with temperatures reaching the fifties on some days. But nevertheless, it is one of the four seasons and we have a playlist for that. You’ll hear Bobbie Gentry, Janis Ian, Donovan, the Lovin’ Spoonful, Johnny Rivers, Hoyt Axton, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Wendy Waldman, Eva Cassidy, Michael Murphy, The Rolling Stones, John Prine, Electric Light Orchestra, Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, Jefferson Airplane, The Band, The Doors, The Kinks, Linda Ronstadt, Nina Simone and more!

3:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Jackson Browne

This is the final airing of Jackson Browne as our featured singer-songwriter, an artist who wrote for others during the sixties, helped pioneer country-rock down in Laurel Canyon and put the Eagles on the map, and whose own career took off in the seventies and is still rolling. Don’t miss it. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new artist.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Carly Simon NEW!

This one has been on my ‘to do’ list for a while and I’ve finally brought it to fruition here. Carly Simon began singing with her sister, Lucy, back in 1963 and strung together a bunch of great hits during the seventies like Anticipation, That’s The Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be, and You’re So Vain. While Mick Jagger appears on You’re So Vain and everyone assumed it was about him, Carly Simon actually revealed that it was about Warren Beatty.

We’re just getting warmed up for the weekend here in The Mermaid Lounge, so do give us a shot. We’re totally free 24/7 and we do not run commercial advertising. We’re not looking for anyone to pay our way here. We take care of that ourselves. It’s all about the music here. We intend to keep it that way.

It’s Sunday Funday in The Mermaid Lounge and The Ladies Are In Charge, Including Janis Who Owns Our Album of The Week, November 13, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! It is officially Sunday in the Lounge and the living is easy here today. It’s rainy. It’s chilly. And the music is already rolling here as we welcome our usual Sunday morning listeners. You should join us too.

Here’s today’s musical journey:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama by Janis Joplin NEW!

Janis gets a spin for this week with her very first and only solo album released during her lifetime on September 11, 1969. This is the album she recorded right after leaving Big Brother & The Holding Company. She enlisted Sam Andrews, guitarist for Big Brother, to help with the project, as well as the Kozmic Blues Band. She also added a brass and horn section, something Big Brother would not allow when she was with them. This album was a departure from her psychedelic rock days as it was much more R & B- and blues-driven. This is the expanded 1999 release with ‘live’ tunes from Woodstock included and with a cover of Dylan’s Dear Landlord, with some new lyrics and a new arrangement by Joplin.

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

The women of rock own the programming today. After Janis makes her AOW debut, you’ll hear her right here along with Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Emmylou Harris, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Sheryl Crow, Valerie Carter, Dusty Springfield, Dolly Parton and more!

Ooooh, wheee! We’ve got a good one going today, music lovers, and you should be part of it. The Music Mermaid has chosen this day to put her sirens in charge of the music. It’s always a good choice. Join our full house of listeners from Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, the UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, California, Texas and Oregon this morning!

Back to The Weekly Grind, But We’ve Got The Music To Help You Out: The Second Airing of Singer-Songwriter Lucinda Williams, The Supremes In the Spotlight, and a Brand New Playlist Tonight, Monday, November 7, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Have you ever seen anything roll around as fast as a Monday? The good news is that we’ve got the music here to help you through. Just lock that office door and pull up a tab. If you’re lucky enough to work at home, even better!

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Lucinda Williams

Lucinda Williams is back for her second airing as our featured Singer-Songwriter this week. We’ll have one more airing a bit later this week as well. Tune her in. She was a friend of Tom’s and he rightfully championed her as someone who must be heard. He could recognize a great songwriter. Lucinda Williams also opened for him on several tours, including his very last one, the 40th Anniversary Tour.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Supremes

There were bands that were instrumental in developing the Motown sound. Diana Ross & The Supremes were certainly one of those acts. We’ve got them In the Spotlight this afternoon.

7:00 p.m. More Cowbell, Please: Various Artists NEW!

We carry you in to this evening with a brand new multi-artist playlist for all percussion lovers out there. This one is all about the cowbell. It opens with what we consider the finest example of a song where the cowbell reigns supreme. You will hear from The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, the Alan Parsons Project, Bob Dylan, Harry Nilsson, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Warren Zevon, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Move, Elton John, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Electric Light Orchestra, Joe Walsh, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Journey. Stephen Stills, Grateful Dead, J. Geils Band, Queen, Steely Dan, Little Feat, The Turtles and more!

Come on, people, let’s start the day off on a fine note by joining us and your friends around the world here in The Mermaid Lounge. We’ve got a great lineup for you today and we won’t cost you one cent. No lie. No surprises. No bullshit.

We Close Out The Work Week With The Ladies in Charge and With Little Feat ‘Live’ in Boston Later On, Friday, October 14, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We are closing out the week in fine style with the women of music fully in charge during the day and Little Feat bringing up the rear later.

Here’s your musical line-up:

11:00 a.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

Here we are at the end of another work week (unless, of course, you work retail; then it never ends) and we put the ladies completely in charge for five hours. You’ll hear Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Emmylou Harris, Petula Clark, Valerie Carter, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Dolly Parton, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Sheryl Crow, Dusty Springfield and more!

7:00 p.m. Little Feat Live at The Orpheum Theater, Boston, MA, October 31, 1975

Without a doubt, a Mermaid Lounge favorite, but with Lowell George at the helm. Do I think they were good post-George? Yes. But the notion that there’s a Little Feat without Lowell George is the same for me as the Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia or The Heartbreakers without Tom Petty.

Before, in between and after we’ve got that great wide Open Stream courtesy of our resident music maven, The Music Mermaid. She has impeccable taste in music, as you well know by now.

We Begin Delving Into the World of Psychedelic Music With Our AOW, and Then The Women of Music Take Over, Sunday, September 11, 2022

Good Morning, Psychedelic Music Lovers! We’ll delve into the world of psychedelic music over the next few weeks with our Album of The Week. We start it off with Country Joe & The Fish!

Today we take a mind-expanding trip into psychedelic music!

Here’s your musical lineup for Sunday:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Electric Music For the Mind and Body by Country Joe & The Fish NEW!

Country Joe & The Fish’s debut album was released in May of 1967, and was one of the very first psychedelic music albums to come out of San Francisco. We include the write up from DiscoverMusic below:

An early 1967 release, Country Joe And The Fish’s debut album opened up all kinds of possibilities: heady jams, poetic ballads, free-form ragas and even a taste of political satire. Because Joe McDonald was a songwriter first, the whole album is wrapped in a tuneful package. The closing “Grace” is a romantic epic in honour of Grace Slick (Janis Joplin would get similar treatment on the follow-up album).

Songs from the LP made it to the airwaves of progressive radio stations like KSAN and KMPX in San Francisco, and I distinctly remember listening to Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine on Boston’s WMEX back in the day. I managed to catch Country Joe live at Boston Garden as well.

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

Starting mid-afternoon, the ladies of music take over the lounge and what a line-up it is with Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Carly Simon, Chrissie Hynde, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Sheryl Crow, Valerie Carter and more!

It’ a keep-it-simple Sunday here in The Lounge. The Music Mermaid is fully in charge today pushing out the great mind-expanding sounds for our friends from Germany, the UK, Chile, Finland, Denmark, The Netherlands, Italy, Ireland, Japan, the Faroe Islands, Texas, Kansas and New York this morning. Why not join us?

It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge and We’ve Got “Baez Sings Dylan” as The AOW, and Our ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP, July 10, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’re here in The Mermaid Lounge on this fine, sunny Sunday and we’ve got a great AOW selection as well as our ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP to get you through the day.

We give you ‘Baez Sings Dylan’ as our Album of The Week starting this evening

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

The women of music take front and center today as we here in The Lounge take to the streets for Roe v. Wade. You’ll hear Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Chrissie Hynde, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Roseanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Valerie Carter, Sheryl Crow and more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Baez Sings Dylan NEW!

There is no question that we have two luminaries of the folk movement on this album as Joan Baez pays tribute to Bob Dylan. They first met in 1961 and collaborated on music for several years before becoming intimately involved. Even after the relationship ended they continued to make music together and have remained friends over the years. Dylan continues to tour, while Joan Baez has formally retired from the road. We will soon have Spotlight features for both.

It’s a day of rest, and there’s no better way to kick back than with some really great music. That’s what you get here. No commercial interruptions. No overly talkative DJs. Nope. Not here. And guess what else is no good here: Your money. Because we are 100% no-strings-attached free 24/7. We don’t stop when the programming stops. We have continuous wide Open Stream with more than 27,000 songs in our collection. We’re all about the music.

Happy Sunday From the Mermaid Lounge Where the Women of Music Own Today’s Programming, June 12, 2022

Good Morning, Folks! It’s Sunday and that’s an official day of rest. If you’re a believer in The Big Guy in the Sky, remember that even he (or she) took today off. The women of music will not be taking today off here. They are fully in charge.

Ladies Day Out starts at 3:00 p.m. EST!

Here’s your Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: American Tune by Eva Cassidy NEW!

Eva Cassidy was a woman of extraordinary talent with a beautiful voice, and she died far too soon for most people to even know about her. ‘we here learned about her posthumously from a friend. This album is a really interesting album for its time. This kind of album is commonplace now, but it wasn’t so common at the time of its release. It’s a collection of her rehearsal tapes and some live performances that was released seven years after her death. But it’s not just a mere collection of songs thrown together. Give it a listen.

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

The women of music are in control starting at 3:00 p.m. and continuing for several hours as we listen to Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Carly Simon, Chrissie Hynde, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Valerie Carter, Sheryl Crowe, and more!

Before, in between, and after you’ll hear our great wide Open Stream with The Music Mermaid fully in control. We’re open all day and night, we’re totally free, and we don’t ask for your personal information. We don’t need it because we don’t try to sell you a damned thing.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Traveling Wilburys, Volume 3 NEW!

There was actually never a second volume, adding to the offbeat mystique of this great supergroup. Another great selection of songs from the guys who also actually never traveled together (as in performing on the road). They were just friends having a great time playing music together, and it showed.

Tune us in. We’ve got Bolivia and Chile both joining the fun this morning. You could be having some fun here too. Because it is absolutely effortless and free. Just push that button below.
