This is a great multi-artist album featuring the music of singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, who wrote many songs including Pancho & Lefty, For The Sake of The Song, If I Needed You, and To Live Is To Fly. Many of his compositions are considered to be masterpieces of American songwriting. His personal story is a sad one as he struggled with substance abuse and alcoholism and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, but it does not diminish this man’s contribution to American popular music. On this album you will hear Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Delbert McClinton, Lucinda Williams, Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, and many more pay tribute to his brilliance.

The excitable boy is back In the Spotlight. We haven’t heard this playlist for a bit, and the time is right. Warren Zevon, undeniably one of the most brilliant singer-songwriters of his generation whose compositions became hits for several artists, struggled to break through as a solo artist. That is, until Linda Ronstadt began singing his songs on her albums and on stage. The result was a great career that spanned a quarter century until his untimely death at the age of 56. Tune him in tonight.

Before, in between, and after our programming (which we keep to a minimum), you’ll be listing to all that great wide Open Stream with The Music Mermaid in charge. There are days when she even picks up a playlist or two on her own. You’ll never know unless you tune in. By the way, today we add the Republic of Korea and Lithuania to our list of listeners. Certainly my favorite J. Geils album out of the many they gave us. In my humble opinion, they were the true bad boys of Boston, no matter what anyone else tells you.

This excellent compilation features all of the Bluesbreakers’ live BBC performances plus the the “Old Grey Whistle Test” performances.
