It’s Sunday Funday in The Mermaid Lounge and The Ladies Are In Charge, Including Janis Who Owns Our Album of The Week, November 13, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! It is officially Sunday in the Lounge and the living is easy here today. It’s rainy. It’s chilly. And the music is already rolling here as we welcome our usual Sunday morning listeners. You should join us too.

Here’s today’s musical journey:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama by Janis Joplin NEW!

Janis gets a spin for this week with her very first and only solo album released during her lifetime on September 11, 1969. This is the album she recorded right after leaving Big Brother & The Holding Company. She enlisted Sam Andrews, guitarist for Big Brother, to help with the project, as well as the Kozmic Blues Band. She also added a brass and horn section, something Big Brother would not allow when she was with them. This album was a departure from her psychedelic rock days as it was much more R & B- and blues-driven. This is the expanded 1999 release with ‘live’ tunes from Woodstock included and with a cover of Dylan’s Dear Landlord, with some new lyrics and a new arrangement by Joplin.

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

The women of rock own the programming today. After Janis makes her AOW debut, you’ll hear her right here along with Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Emmylou Harris, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Sheryl Crow, Valerie Carter, Dusty Springfield, Dolly Parton and more!

Ooooh, wheee! We’ve got a good one going today, music lovers, and you should be part of it. The Music Mermaid has chosen this day to put her sirens in charge of the music. It’s always a good choice. Join our full house of listeners from Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, the UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, California, Texas and Oregon this morning!

Saturday Brings Our ‘Are You Ready For The Country’ EP, the Final Airing of Our AOW, and Our New Singer-Songwriter Series, October 15, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We start the day by announcing a new series revolving around singer-songwriters, some of them travel in pairs (Lennon-McCartney, John-Taupin, and some go solo, like James Taylor and Bob Dylan). To accommodate our new series, we are taking a break from our LIVE DEAD! broadcast. But fear not, we’ll move Dead concerts into the regular programming rotation.

We kick off our new Singer-Songwriter Series tonight at 10:00 p.m.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Are You Ready for The Country: Various Artists

Once again, we pay homage to the pioneers of the country-rock genre and also to the artists of real country music (not bad pop bands with fiddles). You’ll hear from Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Pure Prairie League, Asleep at The Wheel, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Marshall Tucker Band, Jerry Jeff Walker, Mudcrutch, The Band, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Glen Campbell, Rosanne Cash, Dan Fogelberg, New Riders of The Purple Sage, John Prine, The Desert Rose Band and more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Gris-Gris by Dr. John FINAL AIRING!

This is the final day for Gris-Gris, Dr. John’s debut album combining New Orleans R & B with Psychedelic Voodoo. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a new psychedelic album!

10:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriters: The Music of Paul Simon NEW!

We put LIVE DEAD! on hiatus for a while and begin our series on Singer-Songwriters in this broadcast hour. You’ll be hearing from some of our regulars, but there’ll be some new additions as well. Every Saturday night at 10:00 p.m. We begin to night with the music of Paul Simon, both as a member of Simon & Garfunkel and as a solo artist.

It’s a Mermaid Lounge Saturday and we begin a new feature this week. We hope you’ll give us a shot and tune us in. We’re totally free every single day of the week, no joining fees, no “subscriptions” required, no personal information asked for, and no surprises. Just push the button below.

It’s Saturday in The Lounge With Our ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP, The Final Airing of “Aftermath” and LIVE DEAD! Bringing Up the Rear, August 13, 2022

The Women of Music rule The Mermaid Lounge today!

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

Today we put the women of music squarely in the spotlight here in The Mermaid Lounge, and they never disappoint. You’ll hear Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Carly Simon, Chrissie Hynde, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Valerie Carter, Nicolette Larson, and more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Aftermath by The Rolling Stones FINAL AIRING!

We bid a fond farewell to this Stones gem this evening, as we prepare to give you a brand new album for next week. It’s already lined up and ready to go. It debuts tomorrow morning.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at Winterland, San Francisco, October 22, 1978

We have a repeat performance, but we haven’t aired this one since January 2021, so it’s virtually brandy new. And what does it matter anyway? It’s The Dead. The worlds ultimate jam and road band.

Before, in between, and after we have that great wide Open Stream running non-stop 24/7 at no charge to the listening public. We do this for the music, not the money. We accept no advertising, so we don’t pass that capitalistic chatter on to you. It’s all music, all day and night.

The Ladies Take Over The Lounge, The Final Airing of “External Combustion,” and LIVE DEAD! Later, Saturday, May 14, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Today we celebrate the women of music, say farewell to Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs, and close out the programming later with this week’s LIVE DEAD!

Here’s today’s lineup:

10:00 a.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

The women of music are back and are taking over the mike today for five hours of uninterrupted music. You’ll hear Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Carly Simon, Chrissie Hynde, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Sheryl Crow, Valerie Carter, and many more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: External Combustion by Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs. FINAL AIRING!

We say this every week, so why stop now: This is your last chance on this one. When you roll out of bed tomorrow morning, there’ll be a brand new selection here.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The DuPont Gymnasium, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA, May 7, 1970

A rare repeat performance, but this one hasn’t been heard in these parts since summer 2020, so it’s like brand new. But then again, isn’t every one of their performances like brand new?

Here we are again, weekenders. It’s shaping up to be a good one, so this is the perfect day to tune us in for a little bit of a different approach to music on the airwaves.

We Barrel Into Women’s Week With A Broad Spectrum of Programming From The Pioneers, on Monday, March 7, 2022

Good Morning, aficionados of music, particularly women’s music. Let’s face it, women still get the short end of the stick in the music world. And I’m not talking contractually. I’m talking as someone who listens to other radio stations and knows that women still do not get enough air time.

These are just a few of the women you’ll hear today!

Here’s your opening day line-up:

11:00 a.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume Four: Various Artists

We’ve got five volumes of this so far, and this is the one we haven’t heard in the longest time. So, today is the day we break it out. You’ll hear Linda Ronstadt, Nicolette Larson, Shawn Colvin, The Shirelles, Phoebe Snow, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Rosanne Cash, Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, Carole King, Valerie Carter, Petula Clark, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood, and more!

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Aretha Franklin

It’s only fitting that the first one In the Spotlight this week is the undisputed Queen of Soul, the first woman ever inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, and whose career spanned a half century.

7:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt & Friends: Duets and More

In spite of her incredibly successful solo career and her position as the Queen of Rock during the 70’s, Linda Ronstadt always preferred singing with others and dreamed of being in a girl group. She finally achieved that when she joined up with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris for the Trio albums. Here you’ll hear her sing with J. D. Souther, Randy Newman Ry Cooder, Hoyt Axton, Wendy Waldman, Neil Young, Ann Savoy, Paul Simon, Rosemary Clooney, Aaron Neville, Maria Muldaur and more. And you’ll hear her as lead vocalist, background singer, and harmony singer.

Every week is women’s week here in The Mermaid Lounge. People who listen to us regularly already know that. But this is a very special week, and we’re very happy to put the pedal to the metal and give you that little extra. We’re always free, and we’re always on the air 24/7. What could be better?

Between Heaven & Hell, Stephen Stills & Manassas Live in Amsterdam, and Cream’s Farewell Concert, Monday, April 5, 2021

It’s another Monday here in The Mermaid Lounge, where we aim to please. We have some great selections for you today mixed in with all that fine Open Stream.

We feature Cream’s farewell concert tonight at 7:00 p.m.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Between Heaven & Hell: Various Artists

One of our patented multi-artist playlists with either heaven or hell (or both) featured in the title and/or lyrics. Got that? You’ll hear Stevie Wonder, The Byrds, The Grateful Dead, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Donovan, Roberta Flack, ZZ Top, The Foo Fighters, The Eagles, Rosanne Cash, Lucinda Williams, Tom Petty, Fats Domino and many more!

3:00 p.m. Stephen Stills & Manassas, Live at The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, March 22, 1972

A comeback for Stephen Stills after falling by the wayside, and a successful one at that from one of the finest singer-songwriters in popular music.

7:00 p.m. Cream’s Farewell Concert, The BBC Transmission, January 5, 1969

It’s true that Cream wasn’t around for very long, but they left behind some seriously great music. Tonight we feature their farewell concert broadcast by the BBC.

Like I keep saying, more and more people every day. Today we have listeners from the Faroe Islands, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, and Canada. Sooner or later you’ll figure it out. We’re not in this for the money. We neither accept advertising nor have the money to advertise ourselves. We’re in it for the music.

The Women Own It: We Have Young Linda Ronstadt and The All-Girl Revue 4 Sandwiched Around The Final Airing of The Shadow, Friday, January 8, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! The ladies own the day today, and rightfully so. And by the way, there is no other radio station shining a light on women in rock music.

We’re all in on The women of rock n’ roll today. Get with the damned program.

Here’s your line-up for this fine day:

11:00 a.m. Linda Ronstadt: The Stone Poneys & The Early Years

A pretty concise retrospective here of Linda Ronstadt’s beginnings, before she stole that show on that Neil Young arena tour and before Heart Like A Wheel launched her incredible career. The groundwork was laid with The Stone Poneys and her early contributions.

3:00 p.m. The Shadow: 06 House of Horror FINAL AIRING!

Our final airing of this week’s episode of The Shadow. On Monday, we will have episode seven.

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 4: Various Artists

It’s funny how women continue to be a footnote in rock n’ roll history. There is so much evidence of their contribution that it cannot legitimately be denied. Here in The Mermaid Lounge, we don’t view rock n’ roll as strictly a man’s world. The evidence is quite to the contrary.

In this volume of The All-Girl Revue you’ll hear Linda Ronstadt, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Valerie Carter, Petula Clark, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, Carly Simon, and many more!

Tune us in. We’re free. I mean, really free: No credit card or personal information required. All you need is a computer ad a free tab. No shit. No lie.
