We’ve Hit Our Midweek Stride With Our ‘Are You Ready For the Country’ EP, and Tom Rush In The Spotlight, Wednesday, February 16, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! Yes, we’re at midweek. It’s all downhill from here, as they say. We’ve got a great line up today as we wish Tom Rush a happy belated 80th birthday, and turn on the country spigot.

Real country. And country-rock. But no bad pop bands with fiddles here.

Here’s the midweek line-up:

10:00 a.m. Are You Ready For The Country: Various Artists

Tom Petty was a great musicologist. He once referred to the glut of bad country bands as ‘bad pop bands with fiddles.’ None of that shit here today as we give you a great EP of uninterrupted music. You’ll hear Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Pure Prairie League, Asleep At The Wheel, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Outlaws, Jerry Jeff Walker, Mudcrutch, The Flying Burrito Brothers and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Tom Rush

Tom Rush turned 80 years young on February 8th and we’re finally wishing him a happy belated birthday. I saw him at his birthday bash in Portsmouth, New Hampshire (the place of his birth) when he turned 79 last year, and he was fantastic. Today, we put Tom Rush, the artist often credited with heralding in the era of the singer-songwriter, In the Spotlight.

Get on it, folks. This is the toughest day of the week, and we’ll help you get through it with some great music. No charge for the service. Honest. We’re not kidding.

Saturday Brings Sounds of The Supergroups, The Kinks In the Spotlight, the Final Airing of Our AOW, and LIVE DEAD Later, November 20, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s another one of those crazy music Saturdays here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got some great stuff for you today. Read on for details!

Our jumping off programming point today is an expanded ‘Sounds of the Supergroups’

Here’s your Saturday programming:

11:00 a.m. The Sounds of The Supergroups: Various Artists EXPANDED & UPDATED!

We’ve done some work on this since the last time we aired it. You know, the term ‘Supergroup’ is used a bit too liberally today, but we can’t control that shit except as we define the term. These bands do not come along very often, and they generally aren’t a lifetime deal. They may tour, or they may not. But one thing’s for sure: They have been created by artists who were successful either in other bands or as solo artists. We feel confident that we’re giving your the all-inclusive list.

You will hear Cream, Derek & The Dominos, CSNY, The Traveling Wilburys (the world’s all-in number one supergroup of all time as continually voted by the public), The Highwaymen (Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson), Blind Faith, Supertramp, The Plastic Ono Band, Trio (Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris), andThe Super Super Blues Band (Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley).

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul FINAL AIRING!

It’s sayonara after today’s airing, so get on it. Tomorrow we’ll introduce a brand new choice to you as our Album of The Week.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Kinks

The Muswell Hillbillies are back with their own unique sound and collection of hits that can’t be denied. Somehow, I feel like these guys were always on the cusp of being considered a great band in some people’s minds, but The Kinks were as good as any band in their day and had a kick ass sound all their own.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at West High Auditorium, Anchorage, Alaska, June 21, 1980

This is a repeat performance for us, but this has not been aired for more than a year here. This show is one of three that The Dead played in the 2,000-seat auditorium at West High School in Anchorage back in 1980. Many consider it one of their best live shows.

Saturday is here. The weekend is upon (some of) us. Some of us have one more stint left, and that would be me. But you can be here with us in The Mermaid Lounge enjoying life free of charge.

We Celebrate Linda, Dolly & Emmylou’s Trio Release 34 Years Ago Yesterday, and The Rolling Stones Are Live Later, Wednesday, March 3, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s a very special day today as we celebrate the release of Trio by the only female supergroup on the planet thirty-four years ago yesterday. Nobody ever talks about Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and Emmylou Harris even being a supergroup, but that’s because women are still marginalized in the music world. They were every bit a supergroup, make no mistake about it.

Linda, Dolly & Emmylou. A supergroup no matter how much they ignore it.

Here’s today’s line-up:

12:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris: The Trio Sessions, The Complete Collection NEW!

Today we celebrate three extraordinary musical talents who came together and produced two of the most amazing albums of all time. We give you the complete Trio collection, including outtakes, unreleased music, alternate versions, and — of course — the versions you all know and love.

6:00 p.m. The Rolling Stones, Live at the Palais Royale, Toronto, Canada, August 16, 2002

The original bad boys of rock n’ roll here play it for you live from the Palais Royale in Toronto. Hey, it’s only rock n’ roll, but we like it, like it, yes we do.

In between all of this, we have our usual Open Stream, as chosen by the magical Music Mermaid who runs the selection. We’re free, as in free. No membership, credit card, or personal information required. All you need is a free computer tab, then click your heels, and hit the link below.

Big Things Come In Groups of Threes Today From The Mermaid Lounge, Friday, September 18, 2020

It’s finally Friday. Of course, for those of us working retail, that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the week. But no matter. Today in The Mermaid Lounge, great things come in groups of three. You’ll see what I mean.

Linda. Emmylou. Dolly. A supergroup no matter what they tell you.

Here’s Friday’s planned programming:

12:00 p.m. The Complete Trio Collection: Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton

I always lead off with Linda Ronstadt when I’m talking about a group of women singers. That is totally my bias, but it is without shame. No matter how you cut it, women get the short end of the straw in music. If they were guys, the word ‘supergroup’ would be flowing off everyone’s tongue. Linda, Emmylou and Dolly were a supergroup. The Complete Trio Collection proves it.

The complete collection gives you just that along with alternative versions of some of the songs and previously-unreleased material.

7:00 p.m. Steve Earle, Townes VanZandt, and Guy Clark: Together at The Bluebird Cafe, Nashville, September 3, 1995

It was Emmylou Harris who led me to Guy Clark originally. But one winter night in Harvard Square, three friends were outside in the snow freezing and decided to go into Passim’s Coffee Shop to get out of the elements for a while. Somebody was playing that night, but when I walked in and saw it was none other than Guy Clark, I was excited. The three of us were literally blown off our fucking stools. He has been a favorite ever since. A friend of Emmylou.

Now we add Steve Earle and songwriter in the extreme Townes VanZandt to the mix and what we have here is an amazing evening at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. This event took place just fifteen months before VanZand’s death.

Yeah. It’s all-country programming today. What about it? This is one of the things that makes us different than all the rest. This will be about 6 or 7 hours of actual programming. The rest of the 24-hour cycle? All open stream with no commercials. No cost. No obligation. No credit card or personal data required. Radio like it used to be.

It’s Almost an Open Stream Day, But with Benefits. The Trio Sessions and a Replay of ‘The Inner Sanctum’ Are On Tap, Friday, May 8, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables. Today we have an amazing ‘new’ music offering in the Trio Sessions with Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton.

Here’s your Friday line-up!

1:00 p.m.   The Trio Sessions With Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton   NEW!

I guess Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce qualified as a supergroup when they formed Cream. Why these three ladies are not technically considered one is well beyond my understanding, but they certainly are here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio.

We have featured the Trio albums in the past, but these are the Trio Sessions, with remasters, alternate versions and previously unreleased material. If you’ve never heard angels sing before, you are about to.

By the way, you can see the entire playlist in our Playlist section. Just scroll to the bottom of the page!

6:00 p.m.    The Inner Sanctum: Black Sea Gull (Replay)

Tune us in. Next week, we will air a new episode.

Do yourself a favor and tune us in. We’re dead serious about music.

The Trio Sessions, The Heatbreakers Live @ Fenway & Our House Play List Dominate Monday, January 6, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’re switching it up a bit today on both content and timing. We think you’re going to like what we have today!

Linda Dolly Emmylou

11:00 a.m.     Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton: The Trio Sessions

This is a bona fide all-girl supergroup. Like the Traveling Wilburys, it was easy to make  music together (beyond their sheer talent) because they enjoyed each others’ company. The Trio Sessions give you the background: Alternative takes, some unreleased tunes, and plenty of great insight.

5:00 p.m.      Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Live at Fenway Park, Boston (2014)

The Hypnotic Eye tour rolls through Boston producing what is considered one of their finest live performances.

8:00 p.m.      The #BecomeUngovernable House Play List

Can’t beat our house list of protest and revolution music.

We’re free and will always be! All you need to do is pull up a browser tab and tune us in!

The Supergroup Nobody Talks About, The Petty Party Continues, and a Special Trip to the Bluebird Cafe, Sunday, October 6, 2019

Good Evening, Ungovernables. We have some great topics of interest here tonight, including a supergroup that nobody calls a supergroup. But this is a fucking supergroup.

Linda Dolly Emmy

11:00 a.m.    Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton: The Trio Collection and More

These three might be the only all-female supergroup that ever was, but that is exactly what they were. This playlist encompasses 2.5 hours of incredible music from their Trio albums, and more. There are alternate versions, outtakes that have never been heard before, and remixes/remasters. A splendid time is guaranteed for all!

4:00 p.m.      Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Deep Cuts and B-Sides

As I’ve said many times, most bands would kill for their B-sides.

9:00 p.m.      Steve Early, Townes VanZandt and Guy Clark Live at the Bluebird Cafe

Three of the outlaws of country music. When Tom Petty calls most ‘country’ groups around today “bad pop artists with fiddles,” he is not talking about this trio, that’s for sure.

11:00 p.m.     Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Hypnotic Eye

This is not only one of the greatest Tom Petty albums ever, but one of the best albums of all time. See for yourself.
