This may seem like a morbid discussion, but a number of musicians have died in their 27th year. Kurt Cobain. Robert Johnson. Amy Winehouse. But three of the most famous? Janis Joplin. Jimi Hendrix. Jim Morrison. All dead at 27. All members of the ’27 Club.’

4:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles

This is arguably the greatest album of all time. Not only was the music brilliant, but so was the album packaging. It was the first album to open like a book, and the first to feature the lyrics printed on the cover. The front cover photograph remains a conversation piece to this day.

7:00 p.m.    The Beach Boys: The Smile Sessions   NEW!

It is said that Brian Wilson was the creative force behind The Beach Boys. Artists from Linda Ronstadt to Paul McCartney consider him a musical genius, but all of the members conributed to the whole. These sessions prove that The Beach Boys weren’t just another ‘surf music’ band (although they were pretty damned good at that too).

Undoubtedly one of the most amazing live performances in Tom Petty & The Heartbreaker’s concert history. The band is joined on stage for several songs by Stevie Nicks. Musically, the band is on top of its game, and Mike Campbell’s guitar is blistering.

4:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band by The Beatles NEW!

This album changed everything. It was a first for many, many reasons. It was the music world’s first “concept” album, fully launching The Beatles into a new realm of psychedelic music. It was the first album to feature an expanded cover with the lyrics to the songs in print. 

Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band was The Beatles’ 8th studio album, released on May 26, 1967 in the UK, and June 2, 1967 in the U.S. It spent 27 weeks in the number one position on the UK charts, and 15 weeks at number one on Billboard. It received four Grammy Awards in 1968, including Album of the Year, the first rock album to receive this honor.

Today’s treat gives us yet another great solo effort by Tom Petty. Full Moon Fever was released 31 years ago Friday, on April 24, 1989. Petty was joined on the album not only by his Heartbreaker bandmates, but also by his Wilbury bandmates. The album was produced by Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Mike Campbell. Most of the compositions were by Petty and Lynne. The album was an immediate critical and commercial success, peaking at number 3 on the Billboard charts. It was certified 5X platinum in the U.S. and 6X platinum in Canada.

When I say getting live Hendrix is a rarity, it’s because his professional career lasted only four years before his premature death at the age of 27. In spite of that, he is regarded as one of the most influential musicians in rock music history.

7:00 p.m.   Badfinger Live at the Cowtown Auditorium, Kansas City (1972)

The Badfinger story is indeed a tragic one, but this band was the only legitimate star signing for Apple Records, and they left us a great body of music to appreciate.

This was the eleventh album for the band, but its first live album. All of the songs were recorded at the Louisville Palace (April 29 & 30, 2002), with the exception of Down To The River To Pray, which was recorded at Austin City Limits.

4:00 p.m.     Tuesday Bluesday: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing the Blues

Tom Petty was serious about the blues, and his band could certainly sing and play the blues. He often said he envisioned them as old men sitting around with their guitars singing the blues.

8:00 p.m.     Van Morrison: Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl (2008)   NEW!

This was the fifth live album released by Van Morrison. It was recorded on November 7 and 8, 2008, exactly forty years after the first iteration of Astral Weeks was released. Morrison produced this effort, insisting on just one rehearsal and no post-production. Essentially you hear what the audience heard the two nights it was recorded.

10:00 p.m.   Album of the Week: Tom Petty’s Wildflowers

Wildflowers is the second solo studio album (of three) by Tom Petty, who was joined in the studio by his bandmates and a collection of some of the best studio musicians in rock n’roll history.

Wildflowers was the second solo studio album by Tom Petty, and it was released on November 1, 1994. In spite of Petty’s desire to break free of the constraints of the band, he used most of his compadres as session musicians. The album resulted in four single releases, the most successful of which was You Don’t Know How It Feels. The other three were It’s Good To Be King (my all-time favorite Petty song), You Wreck Me, and A Higher Place. Read more about the album and the contributors here.

The first time I ever heard Emmylou Harris sing was on Bob Dylan’s Desire album. I was hooked. When I found Elite Hotel, my love affair began in earnest, and it has not abated. Elite Hotel was Emmylou’s third album release, and her second in 1975. It was preceded by Pieces of The Sky, also a critically-acclaimed release. We will have Pieces of the Sky up in the future.
