It’s Friday and We’ve Got Bob Dylan with TPATH on The True Confessions Tour, Bruce Springsteen, and Some ‘Live’ Bonnie Raitt Later, April 28, 2023

10:00 a.m. Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Rich Stadium, Orchard Park, New York, July 4, 1986

New York celebrated the 4th of July with a bang back in 1986 with Dylan’s True Confessions Tour backed by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Tom Petty credited Dylan with teaching his band how to be spontaneous on stage and, as a result, The Heartbreakers became one of music’s best road bands.

3:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Bruce Springsteen FINAL AIRING!

We bid farewell to Bruce Springsteen as our featured singer-songwriter today with this final airing. Don’t miss it.

8:00 p.m. Bonnie Raitt Live at The Rainbow Room, Philadelphia, PA, February 22, 1972

This is vintage early Bonnie Raitt as we close out our day’s programming in style with this great blues-rock singer and master of the slide guitar who is still making history today.

We Keep It Simple Today With Badfinger’s “No Dice” as Our AOW and ‘The Female Species’ EP, Sunday, April 9, 2023

Good morning, and if you’re celebrating, Happy Easter, Happy Passover and Happy Ramadan one and all! We’re keeping it simple as usual on this fine, sunny Sunday.

Here’s your holiday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Album of The Week: No Dice by Badfinger NEW!

I fell in love with Badfinger early on, and I supposed that’s because I could hear the influence of The Beatles. However, Badfinger was its own juggernaut, helping to create what is known as the power pop genre. It was the one band Apple Records signed that became a big time entity, in spite of the fact that their future held nothing but tragedy. Our album of the week, however, No Dice, was their third studio album released by Apple on November 9, 1970, and helped to expand the group’s popularity, particularly abroad. It was the first to feature lead guitarist Joey Molland. It also gave us the hit No Matter What, and the first recording of the song Without You, which would later become a huge hit for Harry Nilsson.

Buddy Guy’s career started back in 1953. Since then, this great blues guitarist and singer has infuenced several generations of blues players. At 86, Guy is still performing live and is in the midst of his 2023 tour. Tonight he’s In the Spotlight.

Released in 2018, this was Ry Cooder’s first studio album in six years and his sixteenth release overall. Although he has never lost his activist voice, this album returns him to the gospel-infused spirit of his early years. Without a doubt, this singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is a Mermaid Lounge favorite. It should also be noted that Linda Ronstadt considers Ry Cooder to be the finest guitarist she has ever heard or worked with. We here in the lounge respect Linda’s impeccable musical taste.

4:00 p.m. Color My World: Various Artists

We’ve got the great blues-rock vibe of Hot Tuna ad mid-afternoon, with a 2011 release that was their first studio album after a long list of live performance albums. Jorma Kaukonen wrote six of the songs on this album.

7:00 p.m. Tedeschi Trucks Band Live at Red Rocks, Morrison, CO, August 30, 2012

The biggest, baddest blues-rock band in town with one of the all-time great guitarists in Derek Trucks. This great band, helmed by Susan Tedeschi, is known for its high-energy live performances. Another one that’s not to be missed today.

Before there was Live Aid or Farm Aid, there was the Concert for Bangladesh. This first-of-its-kind gathering of musical stars was the conception of George Harrison and Ravi Shankar to benefit the refugees of East Pakistan following the Bangladesh Liberation War-related genocide. Joining Harrison and Shankar were Ringo Starr, Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston and Badfinger.
