Janis at Winterland, The Beach Boys’ Smile Sessions, & Sargeant Pepper Are All On the Docket for Thursday, April 30, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Welcome to day whatever-the-fuck-it-is of our discontent. While we’re all waiting for you to rise up, we’ll try to make life a bit more bearable.

325773

Here’s your line-up for Thursday:

12:00 p.m.   Janis Joplin Live at Winterland 1968

This may seem like a morbid discussion, but a number of musicians have died in their 27th year. Kurt Cobain. Robert Johnson. Amy Winehouse. But three of the most famous? Janis Joplin. Jimi Hendrix. Jim Morrison. All dead at 27. All members of the ’27 Club.’

4:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles

This is arguably the greatest album of all time. Not only was the music brilliant, but so was the album packaging. It was the first album to open like a book, and the first to feature the lyrics printed on the cover. The front cover photograph remains a conversation piece to this day.

7:00 p.m.    The Beach Boys: The Smile Sessions   NEW!

It is said that Brian Wilson was the creative force behind The Beach Boys. Artists from Linda Ronstadt to Paul McCartney consider him a musical genius, but all of the members conributed to the whole. These sessions prove that The Beach Boys weren’t just another ‘surf music’ band (although they were pretty damned good at that too).

We’re here. We’re free. We ask no information. We just deliver the goods.

It’s Wilbury Wednesday! We also have Joni Mitchell ‘Live’ at Club 47, & Sam Cooke at the Harlem Square Club, on April 29, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s mid-week and it’s Wilbury Wednesday! Can it get any better than that? Check out the line-up and see for yourself.

Sam-Cooke-ls_3166067b

Here’s your line-up:

12:00 p.m.   Joni Mitchell Live at Club 47, Cambridge, MA

The year was 1968, and Club 47 was the place. We remember Linda Ronstadt playing there and getting roast beef sandwiches at Elsie’s in Harvard Square. Others also launched their careers there, like Bonnie Raitt. This turn was for Joni.

4:00 p.m.    Wilbury Wednesday! The Traveling Wilburys are in The Spotlight

George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison. Five friends who simply loved making music together and having fun. It shows.

7:00 p.m.    One Night Stand: Sam Cooke Live at the Harlem Square Club   NEW!

Sam Cooke. Sometimes his name doesn’t flow off the lips when you talk about soul music. It should. He’s the man who invented soul.

Join us. It’s free. It’s outside the system. Just do it. All you need to do is click the link.

CSNY in The Spotlight, The Rolling Stones Live at The Fonda Theater & Dylan Live at Budokan, Monday, April 27, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Welcome to yet another Monday, but we won’t call it a Funday unless you’re tuning us in for some great music!

CSNY

Here’s your Monday line-up:

12:00 p.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Undoubtedly one of my all-time favorite bands. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite and, when I do, it could change at any time!

4:00 p.m.     The Rolling Stones: Sticky Fingers Live at the Fonda Theater, Hollywood    NEW!

Maybe Van Morrison started a trend when he performed Astral Weeks live at The Hollywood Bowl in 2009 because, in May 2015, at the intimate Fonda Theater the Rolling Stones performed the entire Sticky Fingers album live in concert for the first — and so far — only time in their career.

7:00 p.m.     Bob Dylan: Live at Budokan 1979

One of my favorite Dylan live shows here. Enjoy.

Tune in. Turn on. Drop out. (I think someone famous said that.)

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ 30th Anniversary Concert, and “Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band” is Our Album of the Week, Sunday, April 26, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We have a light programming day today, but we feature two powerhouse performances!

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers 30th Anniversary

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

12:00 p.m.   Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers 30th Anniversary Concert: Live From The Stephen J. O’Connell Center, Gainesville, Florida, September 21, 2006  NEW!

Undoubtedly one of the most amazing live performances in Tom Petty & The Heartbreaker’s concert history. The band is joined on stage for several songs by Stevie Nicks. Musically, the band is on top of its game, and Mike Campbell’s guitar is blistering.

The set list is available under the Playlist tab on this blog (scroll to the bottom).

4:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band by The Beatles NEW!

This album changed everything. It was a first for many, many reasons. It was the music world’s first “concept” album, fully launching The Beatles into a new realm of psychedelic music. It was the first album to feature an expanded cover with the lyrics to the songs in print.

Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band was The Beatles’ 8th studio album, released on May 26, 1967 in the UK, and June 2, 1967 in the U.S. It spent 27 weeks in the number one position on the UK charts, and 15 weeks at number one on Billboard. It received four Grammy Awards in 1968, including Album of the Year, the first rock album to receive this honor.

Thisi s a very good day for music here in The Mermaid Lounge, so tune us in.

It’s 4-20-20 and We’re “Under The Influence,” Emmylou Harris & Spyboy in Zurich, and The Shelters in the Spotlight, Monday, April 20, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’re off to a great start this week with a brand new Emmylou Harris concert event in Zurich, Switzerland!

EmmylouHarrisSpyboy

Here’s your Monday line-up:

1:00 p.m.   Under The Influence: Various Artists

Celebrate April 20, 2020 with our great Under The Influence playlist!

4:00 p.m.   Emmylou Harris & Spyboy: Live in Zurich (1997)   NEW!

Emmylou Harris’ groundbreaking step added a new dimension to her already-sellar career. She assembled a band she called Spyboy to develop a ‘stripped down’ approach to the music she was making at the time. Read about it here.

8:00 p.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of The Shelters

Tom Petty mentored the Shelters and produced their first album. At the time of his death, he was working with them on their second album. The Shelters forged on without their friend, and finished the album. It is included in this playlist.

Tune us in. It’s Monday. We all need some good music on a Monday.

“Wildflowers” Debuts, The Soul Queens Return & Eric Clapton Hangs With His Friends, on Sunday, April 19, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Well, we have some great new stuff for you on this day, including the debut of Tom Petty’s solo gem, Wildflowers, as our Album of the Week.

The Soul Queens, Vol. 1

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

1:00 p.m.  Album of the Week: Tom Petty’s Wildflowers   NEW!

Wildflowers was the second solo studio album by Tom Petty, and it was released on November 1, 1994. In spite of Petty’s desire to break free of the constraints of the band, he used most of his compadres as session musicians. The album resulted in four single releases, the most successful of which was You Don’t Know How It Feels. The other three were It’s Good To Be King (my all-time favorite Petty song), You Wreck Me, and A Higher Place. Read more about the album and the contributors here

4:00 p.m.   The Soul Queens, Volume 1: Various Artists

Aretha Franklin, Ann Peebles, Martha & The Vandellas, The Supremes, Mary Wells, Carla Thomas, Little Eva, and more.

8:00 p.m.   Eric Clapton & Friends Live!  NEW!

Eric Clapton has a few friends over, and they ain’t social distancing. He is joined by Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Joe Cocker for a great repertoire of songs. Enjoy!

It’s Sunday. A day of rest. Take advantage and tune us in.

The Allman Brothers & Eric Clapton, Ronstadt “Live” on Boston Common, Jakob Dylan in the Spotlight, and “Elite Hotel” Returns, Thursday, April 16, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Here we are ramping up for another fine day of programming before tomorrow’s Open Stream Day.

Jakob Dylan & The Wallflowers

Here’s your Thursday line-up!

12:00 p.m.   The Allman Brothers Band & Eric Clapton, Live at the Beacon (2009)

Imagine you’re at the Beacon Theater watching the Allman Brothers play…and Eric Clapton joins them on stage. Are you kidding me?

4:00 p.m.     Linda Ronstadt Live on Boston Common, July 22, 1983   NEW!

By the eighties, Linda Ronstadt knew there was ‘something wrong’ with her voice, but none of us in the audience even noticed. Another great performance by the most accomplished, versatile, talented female singer of all time.

7:00 p.m.    In the Spotlight: Jakob Dylan & The Wallflowers, Solo

Last week we featured Willie’s boy. This week, Bob’s boy. He’s no slouch either.

10:00 p.m.  Album of the Week: Elite Hotel by Emmylou Harris

If you want to find out what you’re missing, you’re going to have to tune us in.
