Good Morning, Musicologists! We are on a roll here today with a great sixties band on tap, some ‘live’ Neil Young and another of his great road bands, and our Album of The Week.

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

10:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Rascals

The Rascals were, in short, one hell of a band, not to mention a hit machine in the sixties. I prefer to call them a rock n’ soul band, but that’s just me. What should be mentioned here is that between 1966 and 1968, this band reached the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 nine times. They were no joke.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Aftermath by The Rolling Stones

We have reached our next-to-last airing of this great Stones breakthrough album, their first where all songs were written by Jagger-Richards. Our final airing will be sometime on Saturday!

7:00 p.m. Neil Young & The International Harvesters Live at The Moody Theater, Austin City Limits, Austin, Texas, September 25, 1984

Neil Young is famous for his touring bands. This was one of them. And this was such a great entry into the legacy of Neil Young. I can’t describe this band better than Rolling Stone did,

The International Harvesters remain the most unique and misunderstood of his many touring bands: a large ensemble of studio and touring sidemen with top-shelf Nashville, Memphis and Cajun credentials, including R&B songwriter and pianist Spooner Oldham, the Grand Ol’ Opry fiddler Rufus Thibodeaux and J.J. Cale drummer Karl Himmel. Bassist Tim Drummond, who was in the ’84 lineup of the Harvesters, played with both James Brown and Conway Twitty before cutting his first sessions with Young for 1972’s Harvest. And when Oldham wasn’t available in ’85, Young scored a rare coup, coaxing the prolific Nashville session pianist Hargus “Pig” Robbins out of the studio and on tour. “He hadn’t been on the road that much, but he loved it,” Young insists, still delighted. “He wanted to go. They all did.”

This big-sound blues swing band has been at it for more than half a century now. I remember going to these great small local venues when I was young to see these guys perform. I can’t imagine you haven’t heard of them but, if that’s the case, you should tune us in at 11:00 a.m. EST for this one.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Creole Moon by Dr. John

This is the second airing of Creole Moon and, while it is Tuesday Bluesday, we contend that this qualifies. It qualifies because Dr. John returns to his New Orleans Rhythm & BLUES roots with this effort.

7:00 p.m. Tedeschi Trucks Band Live at Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison, CO, August 30, 2012

Here we have the biggest, baddest blues-rock band on the planet with the best damned guitarist of his generation in Derek Trucks. Let’s not forget Susan Tedeschi, however. She’s the other anchor of this great band. They have long been known as a great stage band, but they established themselves as a great album band with Revelator.

Some great ‘live’ music here from the Nitetripper, otherwise known as Dr. John, otherwise known as Malcom John Rebbenack, Jr. No matter what you call him, Dr. John is a Mermaid Lounge favorite here as he delivers his New Orleans brand of R & B, funk, blues and jazz.

Great day to tune us in as we focus on one of our favorite musical venues today. Some of the folks you hear today, like Chance Bushman and The Daywalkers, I learned about on a trip to New Orleans where there’s practically street music on every corner. Don’t miss it!

I will never forget her appearance as the opening act for Ronstadt’s concert at the Orpheum in Boston, and the two of them singing on stage together. One of my fondest musical memories.

We haven’t heard this one in a bit, and it’s more than worth pulling it out so that we can all be reminded about what a great band The Spoonful actually was. They were at the forefront of the Laurel Canyon music explosion and were a hit machine. I hear them a lot at work and every time the station plays a song, all I think is, “What a great song.” They were that kind of band.

3:00 p.m. BeauSoleil Live in Louisiana!

This is a live compilation of performances by BeauSoleil culled from their 2006 Louisiana Crossroads performances. By the way, 2006 also marked the 30th year as the band’s world ambasador of authentic Cajun music.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Laid Back by Gregg Allman NEW!

This is the first solo album by Gregg Allman, the leader, songwriter and main vocalist of the venerated Allman Brothers Band. In fact, he worked on his debut album while working simultaneously on the Allman’s Brothers And Sisters album. It was released on Capricorn Records in October of 1973. The album resulted in two singles, Midnight Rider and Don’t Mess Up A Good Thing. Midnight Rider was also covered by the Allman Brothers Band, but Gregg Allman’s version remains my favorite.

Saving this great playlist for Mardi Gras week is a thing of the past. It should be played more frequently than once a year. Not only will you hear music that is central to the culture of New Orleans, but you’ll hear from some mainstream artists who were born in New Orleans. Our number one supergroup here in these parts is for sure The Traveling Wilburys, but these guys are right behind them at number two. Crosby, Stills & Nash were the original configuration, but Neil Young added a dimension that cannot be denied, giving them the Canadian portion of this Canadian-American supergroup. They made some great music together, and we’ve got them In the Spotlight to start off the day.

3:00 p.m. The Magnolia Sisters: Live at the Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Festival, Rancho Santa Susanna Community Park, Simi Valley, California, May 23, 2015

We love Cajun-Zydeco here in the Lounge as you know, and we’ve got a short but sweet performance here by the only all-girl Cajun band on the planet. Ann Savoy is the impetus behind the Magnolia Sisters. For those who may not know her, she teamed up with Linda Ronstadt (as the Zozo Sisters) for the brilliant Grammy-nominated album Adieu False Heart, and their remake release of Walk Away Renee. Their music is part of our standard rotation, but we hope to bolster this genre of music in 2022, starting today. We remain on the hunt for more live music from The Magnolia Sisters.

Nope. It’s not quite an EP, but that’s okay because we do need some short players as well. This is all about the color black in song…in the title or lyrics, or both. It not only features authentic New Orleans music, but highlights the musicians who were born in Louisiana, like Lucinda Williams, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Dr. John, and Allen Toussaint. In addition to those artists, you’ll hear BeauSoleil, Clifton Chenier, The Neville Brothers, Tony Joe White, Professor Longhair, Irma Thomas (The Soul Queen of New Orleans), Allen Fontenot, Aaron Neville, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Chance Bushman, The Daywalkers, The Boogaloo Swamis, Kermit Ruffins, The Magnolia Sisters, The Meters, Queen Ida & The Bon Temps, Boozoo Chavis, and many more. Chance Bushman and The Daywalkers are local NOLA artists whose music I had the pleasure of hearing during a 2014 trip. The Boogaloo Swamis, oddly enough, were a band we fell in love with here in Boston at a local place called Johnny D’s in Somerville, Massachusetts. We hope you enjoy this extended playlist.

We thought we’d make all of the programming a celebration of New Orleans today, and we could think of nobody more deserving of the Spotlight than Dr. John, also known as The Nitetripper. Dr. John was a New Orleans legend whose career spanned decades. He was musically active from the 1950’s up until his death in 2019. His musical style combined New Orleans blues, jazz, funk and R & B.

This is a rare repeat performance, but it has been well over a year since its initial airing here, so it’s back in circulation! Every show is a new show when we’re talking about The Grateful Dead.
