Friday Brings ‘The British Are Coming’ EP and Puts Neil Young In the Spotlight As We Prepare For The Snow, January 28, 2022

Welcome to Friday as we all prepare to be bombed by a potentially historic nor’easter here in the Beantown area. As we all know in these parts, we can get anywhere from 10 inches to 2 feet. Stay tuned. But one thing is certain, the music is always outstanding here in The Mermaid Lounge, rain, snow or shine.

Yeah. They’ll be here promptly at 11:00 a.m. EST for an extended visit.

Here’s Friday’s musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

We all know how the story goes. The American musicians were influenced by the Brits, and vice versa. That’s how we got here. With this extended playlist, you’ll hear The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Them, The Hollies, The Who, The Animals, Yes, Queen, The Kinks, The Dave Clark Five, Rod Stewart, The Bee Gees (before they caught night fever; not after), The Yardbirds, The Pretenders, Lulu, Herman’s Hermits, Blind Faith, The Spencer Davis Group, Cream, Traffic, Donovan, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, and more! That’s five hours of uninterrupted music from across the pond!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Neil Young

While we remove Eric Clapton from the limelight, we put Neil Young in the limelight. This isn’t a question of politics which, as you know, we keep out of this radio station’s airing. The public health is not a political issue, and medical misinformation is not in the public interest. We will neither participate in it nor will we give voice to those who do. Like Eric Clapton. Aside from Neil Young’s stand on the issue, consider that the man is the Energizer Bunny of rock n’ roll, recently releasing his 41st album and his 14th with Crazy Horse. His career has spanned more than a half century, and he is deserving of the spotlight.

All of our friends are here this morning, including our new listeners from Pakistan, Lithuania, and Turkey. Why don’t you join them? It’s easy, as they’ve found out. No information required. No subscription required. No credit card required. All you need is a computer, a new tab, and your mouse. Eek.

We Hit Our Midweek Stride With ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ and Emmylou Harris & Spyboy ‘Live’ Later, Wednesday, January 26, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists. We’ve got a pretty damned good line-up scheduled for today starting with those sweet Laurel Canyon sounds.

We’ve got that sweet Laurel Canyon sound today!

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

Laurel Canyon was musical paradise for two generations of innovators, and was a hotbed for the fusion that brought us country-rock, and inspired this great EP to get you through the midweek. The musicians who lived and played there, fed off each other creatively. Rumor has it that everyone loved partying with The Monkees. You’ll hear The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas & The Papas, The Doors, The Monkees, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Neil Young, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Canned Heat, J.D. Souther, Carole King, James Taylor, America, and more!

7:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & Spyboy Live at Kongresshaus, Zurich, Switzerland, January 20, 1977

We go on the road with Emmylou Harris & Spyboy for the Wrecking Ball tour, what many consider Harris’ career-redefining album produced by Daniel Lanois. She took a minimalist approach with her band, bringing it back to basics. Spyboy consisted of country singer-songwriter Buddy Miller on guitar, and two New Orleans musicians, Daryl Johnson on bass and Brady Blade on drums. As it turns out, Wrecking Ball is one of my all-time favorite Emmylou Harris albums.

Before, in between, and after we give you wide Open Stream on a 24/7 basis. We never stop, unless there is some kind of unfortunate Internet event. We haven’t had one yet. All you need to do is pull up a tab and press play.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With ‘The Best of Chicago Blues’ and Live Buddy Guy With Stevie Ray Vaughan Later, January 25, 2022

Good Morning, Bluesologists everywhere! We’ve got some great blues lined up for you today, along with the second airing of our Album of The Week.

We’ve got nearly three hours of great Chicago Blues opening the programming today!

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. The Best of Chicago Blues: Various Artists

This one is destined to become an EP, no doubt, as we build our Chicago blues library. Right now, it’s nearly three hours of great blues with Otis Rush, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Howlin’ Wolf, Magic Slim, Son Seals, Lonnie Brooks, Buddy Guy, Sonny Boy Williamson, and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan

The second airing of Bob Dylan’s brilliant Blood On The Tracks, his fifteenth studio album, was released January 20, 1975, on Columbia. The album is home to what is undoubtedly one of my all-time favorite Dylan songs, Tangled Up In Blue.

7:00 p.m. Buddy Guy & Stevie Ray Vaughan Live at The Lone Star Cafe, New York City, April 14, 1986 NEW!

Here we have a brand new entry to our blues collection, with two blues guitar masters. This is undoubtedly unbridled electric blues here. These two would play together several times. Another notable show as in 1989 at Buddy Guy’s Blues Legends club. We’re working on that one also.

If you’re a lover of the blues, Tuesday is your day here in The Mermaid Lounge, where two of the programs are always dedicated to the blues. Before, in between, and after, we give you wide Open Stream with The Music Mermaid in charge. Just do it. It’s free.
