This particular playlist is one of our favorites. Everyone knows the Heartbreaker hits, but Tom Petty made a lot of music in his day. What we give you here are the lesser-knowns. For those who are lovers of his hits, this will be a revelation. For those who have delved into all of the Petty archives, this will be a celebration.

Saturday Brings ‘The Western Wall Tour’ with Ronstadt & Harris, Two Albums (One Our AOW and One For Petty Month), and LIVE DEAD Later, October 16, 2021

This was undoubtedly one of the most amazing performances I have ever witnessed. It was billed as The Two of Us, but it was really in support of their great duet album, Western Wall, The Tucson Sessions recorded at the Arizona Inn.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon FINAL AIRING!

Today we bid a fond farewell to this week’s AOW, Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new selection. (I repeat this shit every week, don’t I?)

7:00 p.m. Not The Album of The Week: Mojo by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

This one’s not our Album of The Week this week because it has already been our AOW once. But in the midst of Tom Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge, we believe this album begs replaying. According to producer Ryan Ulyate, this was one of those albums where Petty kept coming in with great songs…to the point where fifteen were included here. Released on June 15, 2010, it was Petty’s first new album with the band in eight years and the consensus everywhere was that it was well worth the wait.

ZZ Top was started in Houston, Texas in 1969. For 51 years the trio of Dusty Hill (vocals, bass), Billy Gibbons (vocalist, guitarist), and Frank Beard (drums) made some of the best rock music around. Oddly enough, Frank Beard was the only member in the band without an outrageous beard. Today, we put them In the Spotlight.

For those who do not know Valerie Carter, this album is a great way to start that process. It is so hard to categorize this album (her debut album). It’s a little bit folk, it’s a little bit country, it’s got some jazz moments and it’s a lot of R & B and funk. Carter has an amazing voice that can handle it all. Just A Stone’s Throw was produced by Lowell George (Little Feat), George Massenburg, and Maurice White (Earth, Wind & Fire). It featured musicians like Jackson Browne, Bob Glaub, Herb Pederson, John Sebastion and literally all of Little Feat. Her back-up singers included Linda Ronstadt, Deniece Williams, Herb Pederson, Lowell George, and Maurice White. Yeah, you’ve got all week to tune it in, but why wait?

We have two massive sixties rotation EP’s, and this is the first from the early sixties to the mid-sixties. There’s some overlap in artists from one to the other, but none of the songs overlap. One of my all-time favorite Heartbreaker performances here from a great venue. I could go off here and extol the virtues of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and what they contributed to music, but I don’t need to do that. All you need to do is LISTEN.

7:00 p.m. Eva Cassidy Recorded Live at Blues Alley, Georgetown, January 2-3, 1996

When I mention Eva Cassidy to people, they look at me perplexed. Many haven’t heard of her, and that’s because she was just coming into her own when she died of cancer at the age of 33. For those of you who don’t know Eva Cassidy and her music, she was a singer, guitarist and pianist who used her beautiful soprano voice to interpret jazz, folk, country and blues songs.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Badfinger Live at The BBC (1972-1973)

We consider Badfinger a highly underrated band. They were pioneers in the ‘power pop’ genre, and were the one bona fide band with real star power signed by The Beatles’ Apple Records. They are the architects of one of my favorite songs of all time, Baby Blue. I remember binge watching Breaking Bad and when they closed the series with that song, I thought it was the perfect choice. Today we have them live at the BBC.

3:00 p.m. Acid: The Lost Cream Tapes

In the middle of the afternoon, we’ve got some great “lost” music that was just released to the public in this decade but was actually recorded back in 1967. This selection is pretty much all over the place with some unreleased music, some great studio jams (which we can only describe as hooch induced at this point), and even a couple of commercial recordings for Falstaff beer. Is that shit even still around?

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 5: Various Artists

As you well know, we have a particular commitment to the women of popular music, and we continue that tradition today with volume five of our All-Girl Revue. I’ve seen many a concert in this legendary venue, which has now sadly been transformed into a mega-arena. It was supposedly done to improve the sound quality, but I think that’s utter bullshit. I digress. This show was just over three hours of sheer bliss. If you’re a Deadhead, come join the fun tonight.

They join The Doors, Canned Heat, The Byrds, Joni Mitchell, The Mamas & The Papas and others from the first wave.
