Does it get any better than this? We’re not quite sure about that. We have what I consider to be the best damned Southern rock/blues band on stage with one of the greatest guitarists on the planet. I would have loved to be in attendance. This is the next best thing.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Linda Ronstadt, The Stone Poneys & Friends, Volume III

From the blues to a bit of folk interlude here. The final album from Linda Ronstadt & The Stone Poneys was released in 1968. The following year, she would launch her solo career.

7:00 p.m. The Best of Louisiana Blues, Volume Two: Various Artists

Louisiana has contributed mightily to the history of blues music with Dr. John, Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton, Slim Harpo, Snooks Eaglin, Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas, Professor Longhair, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown and many more. You can hear them here this evening.

It’s Sunday and The British Are Coming! Linda Ronstadt & The Stone Poneys Own The Album of The Week, May 9, 2021

Good Morning and welcome to the British Invasion! Today we air our British Invasion (and beyond) long-player and give you a brand new Album of The Week.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Linda Ronstadt, The Stone Poneys & Friends, Volume III NEW!

A very young Linda Ronstadt and her band, The Stone Poneys, released their third and final album on April 29, 1968. Capitol Records was beginning to realize Ronstadt’s potential and put her front and center on the cover, which would increase tensions in the band. On this album, she began to branch out, choosing songs written by the great Tim Buckley and Laura Nyro. The following year, she would release her first solo album. The rest, as they say, is history. Tensions notwithstanding, Kenny Edwards would become a fixture in her solo backup band for many years.

3:00 p.m. The British Are Coming! Various Artists

We bring back one of our best long playlists today featuring bands from the British Invasion right on up to Queen. You will also hear Them (featuring Van Morrison), The Searchers, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles (of course), The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Dave Clark Five, The Yardbirds, Cream, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Herman’s Hermits, and more!

Lucinda Williams Live, Laura Nyro In the Spotlight, Our Album of The Week, and LIVE DEAD, Saturday, May 8, 2021

Happy Saturday, Musicologists! It’s our usual rockin’ Saturday here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’re loaded with great stuff today, starting with Lucinda Williams.

Lucinda Williams, who had a stroke last year, is ready to return to action and we are celebrating!

It recently came to light that Lucinda Williams suffered a stroke late last year. She is now ready to sing again, and we here in The Mermaid Lounge are happy about that. Today, we have her live at Austin City Limits.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Nothing But A Breeze by Jesse Winchester

Jesse Winchester remains one of the most underrated singer-songwriters of his generation, and today we have the final airing of his album, Nothing But A Breeze. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a new Album of The Week.

6:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Laura Nyro

Laura Nyro is another of those singer-songwriters who sometimes flies under the radar. She has written songs that have put many people on the charts. But there’s nothing like hearing Laura Nyro sing her own compositions. You can do that here today.

One of the world’s greatest performers at one of the world’s most vaunted venues right here. I’ve seen Bonnie Raitt in several small venues in Boston in my lifetime. There’s nothing like that experience.

Our second to last airing of this fine album. Our final will be on Saturday. Catch it while you can, folks! Jesse Winchester is one of the most underappreciated singer-songwriters of his generation.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Van Morrison

We haven’t heard this particular playlist in a while, so it’s a great time to break it out. I’ll say it again, Van Morrison is an insufferable cad. Don’t believe a word that comes from his mouth when he tells you he’s fighting for your freedom when he wants to pack in the tour venues during COVID-19. What he wants to do is line his pocket. I’ve also seen Van several times and he’s not exactly the nicest guy on stage either. But his music? One of the very best here.

Tune us in, folks. We are most definitely not-for-profit, and that is tough to find on the regular airwaves these days. Earlier this week, I drove in a U-Haul truck to move my daughter back to Boston. All they had was regular radio. I opted for silence instead.

This is an occasional feature here in The Mermaid Lounge. Today we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Hard Promises, released on May 5, 1981. It’s hard to imagine an album this good coming right on the heels of The Heartbreakers’ breakout album, Damn The Torpedoes! (last week’s Album of The Week, by the way), but it did.

It’s true that The Waiting was the anchor of Hard Promises, but there’s also A Woman In Love (It’s Not Me), Nightwatchman, A Thing About You, Something Big, Insider (featuring Stevie Nicks), and one of my favorite Heartbreaker songs of all time, Kings Road.

4:00 p.m. #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

This is nearly three hours of the music that originally inspired me to start this crazy endeavor to begin with. It is due for an upgrade soon, but it’s still one of the best playlists we feature with Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Animals, The Byrds, The Who, The Chambers Brothers, The Temptations, John Lennon, T. His music has been recorded by Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Buffet, Joan Baez, Willie Nelson, and even Patti Page. You ought to get to know the guy.

We kick it all off with Jesse Winchester’s Nothing But A Breeze. Winchester is a guy who gets no respect, in my opinion. I’m quite happy I don’t pay a whit of attention to music critics, frankly. The rap on this one was that he covered three songs (they weren’t his own compositions). And? What’s wrong with that. Plenty of people have covered his songs, Emmylou Harris being one of them. Undoubtedly one of my favorite albums, so enjoy this one.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The music that inspired me to start this radio station takes us into the evening. You’ll hear Janis Joplin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, The Who, The Searchers, The Dave Clark Five, Bob Dylan, The Band, Cream, Derek & The Dominos, and many others. This concert brings what many people feel is the greatest of all Joni Mitchell’s stage bands, composed of Pat Metheny (guitar), Jaco Pastorius (bass), Lyle Mays (keyboards), Michael Brecker (sax), and Don Alias (drums)…although I saw the Court & Spark tour as well with Tom Scott & The L.A. Express and thought that was pretty fabulous as well. But we quibble here, because no matter how you feel, this one’s a winner.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Peculiar Picks, Highlights From The Buried Treasure Show

Long before there was a Tom Petty Radio on Sirius XM, there was Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure Show where he morphed into our favorite DJ. I don’t know why they call this his “peculiar” picks. Frankly, Petty could give a less on the history of rock and roll, and that’s basically what he did with his radio show. He shared his personal record collection and educated us all. Here we offer you Mr. Petty, disc jockey. Enjoy. It’s a great multi-artist playlist.

11:00 a.m. Hot Tuna Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA, March 4, 1988 NEW!

This great band was originally intended as an acoustic spinoff from the Jefferson Airplane, but it soon became the full-time project of its founders, Jack Cassady and Jorma Kaukonen. They became a popular road band in the seventies, and eventually mixed in some electric. One of the best in our book.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Dusty Springfield

Rolling Stone has called Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien, also known as Dusty Springfield, Britain’s “best ever pop singer,” and we totally agree. She embodies the descripton ‘blue-eyed soul’ building a career on a deep voice that emulated the Motown sound that she loved. Those who overlook Dusty are quite remiss. Her career was in full throttle for forty years, from the 50’s to the 90’s.

Great day to tuna (I meant this; not a typo) us in. I know, it was a bad attempt, but it’s early and it worked for me. We’re not-for-profit. We’re in it for the music every single day. Give us a shot, and help us spread the word.

It’s a Mudcrutch Monday, We Have ‘Live’ Jesse Winchester, and The Doors In The Spotlight, April 26, 2021

Ah, yes, another week begins in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got some great programming, including new ‘live’ Jesse Winchester, a great singer-songwriter who is sometimes forgotten.

Singer-songwriter Jesse Winchester, a man who lives through the voices of others will live through his own today.

This was the same tour that brought Tom Petty’s “other band” through Boston’s House of Blues. I will forever kick myself in the ass for missing this opportunity, but I thought I had many more in the future. Sadly, I was wrong. Mudcrutch may not be The Heartbreakers, but they are a great band nonetheless.

3:00 p.m. Jesse Winchester Live at The Bijou Cafe, Philadelphia, May 26, 1977 NEW!

I’ve seen Jesse Winchester twice in my lifetime, both times as an opening act for Emmylou Harris. When Emmylou breaks into Defying Gravity, few know that the song was written by Winchester. He has made a lot of music over the yeears, and he is appreciated here in The Mermaid Lounge, where we have just added his catalogue to our general rotation and will feature some of his live performances.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Doors

I’ve been missing these crazy guys lately. In just four years before Morrison’s untimely death, the left us a hell of a musical catalogue. Tonight we put them In the Spotlight.
