Here we are with one of the more underrated bands of the sixties. I think The Association is one of the most intriguing bands of sixties, hard to pin down, and with a really nice sound. I wasn’t intending on a Haiku. Sorry.

3:00 p.m. The Shadow: 06 House of Horror NEW!

Okay, here’s the deal: A mad scientist steals a gorilla from the zoo. (How is that possible?) There’s also a brain transplant involved, but I’m not giving you the details. By now, you are so on the edge of your seat that you just have to tune this one in. While I won’t reveal the details, I will say that I think The Three Stooges also did this episode.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Lovin’ Spoonful

“In a coffee house Sebastian sat, and after every number they’d pass the hat…” Those are the lyrics from The Mamas & The Papas song, Creeque Alley, the story of the Laurel Canyon days. They also talk about McGuinn (The Byrds) and McGuire (Eve of Destruction), but Sebastian is John of The Lovin’ Spoonful, a great little sixties jug band. Those were the days.

Tom Petty Shares His Record Collection, Lukas Nelson & POTR are In the Spotlight, and Joan Baez Owns Our Album of The Week, Sunday, January 3, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! How the hell are you this fine Sunday? We have a great line-up today sprinkled in all that Open Stream which, we are again expanding as we speak (or as I write).

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Joan Baez by Joan Baez NEW!

This album has great historical significance to music. In 2015, the album was placed into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress for special recognition and preservation as one of the sound recordings in over 130 years of recording history that has “cultural, artistic and/or historical significance to American society and the nation’s audio legacy” It was recorded in the summer of 1960 and released the same year. Later re-issues contained bonus tracks, but this is the original 13 songs and nothing more.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Peculiar Picks: The Best of The Buried Treasure Show NEW!

Tom Petty had a side gig. He was a DJ on The Buried Treasure Show, which debuted on Sirius XM’s Deep Tracks channel, then moved to Tom Petty Radio. Tom Petty shared not only some pretty great music (some of it buried and pretty obscure), but his knowledge about its history and how it influenced the influencers. Those of us who listen beyond the catchy tune stage consider this show a national treasure, and agree totally with the sentiment expressed in this article.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real

Yeah. He’s Willie’s boy. And he’s pretty damned good. POTR, as they are affectionately known, also has a side gig as Neil Young’s touring band. Can’t get a much better endorsement than that.

I have no clue what any of you are up to today but — whatever it is — you should have this station tuned in. After all, it’s Sunday Funday. And we’re really fun and won’t cost you a dime.

Tom Rush is a favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge and across New England. This is a compilation of two shows recorded at Boston’s Symphony Hall early in his career.

4:00 p.m. Petty Theft: The Covers

Nope. This isn’t other people covering Tom Petty. This is Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers covering their influencers. The same qualities that make them the best American rock n’ roll band make them arguably, the greatest cover band of all time.

8:00 p.m. The Beatles Complete Apple Rooftop Concert

One day, the Fab Four decided to go out and give a concert at lunch on the top of Apple Records headquarters on Saville Row. Needless to say, all hell broke loose, and it took the British Bobbies a bit of time to figure out just exactly what the hell was going on. This is that impromptu concert in its entirety.

10:00 p.m. The Shadow: 05 Hounds in The Hills

This is the final airing of this week’s episode. We’ll have a brand new one on Monday.

We move from The Band’s Moondog Matinee to Van Morrison’s Moondance. There’s a certain unplanned symmetry to this selection. But this is undoubtedly one of the finest albums ever made in the history of popular music. It is more than a worthy selection as our Album of The Week.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Donovan

It has been a while since we heard from this guy. He certainly made some of the most memorable music of the sixties, and is one of my personal favorites.

7:00 p.m. Lucinda Williams Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, November 20-22, 2003 NEW!

These live songs were recorded over a three-night performance at The Fillmore in San Francisco on November 20, 21 and 22, 2003. Released in 2005, this was Lucinda’s first live album ever, and it’s a great one.

Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell’s career has spanned four decades. Mitchell’s talents embrace various musical styles, including folk, pop, rock and jazz. I had the opportunity to see her at Boston’s Music Hall with Tom Scott & The L.A. Express on her tour supporting the release of her album, Court & Spark. She was amazing.

3:00 p.m. The Shadow: 04 Death Under The Chapel NEW!

An insane professor is dropped from the faculty after causing the suicide of one of his students. You can imagine that he might have revenge in mind.

7:00 p.m. Bob Dylan Live in ’75: The Rolling Thunder Revue

Bob Dylan on his Rolling Thunder Review tour, along with his loosely-assembled back-up band called Guam, which included Ronee Blakeley, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, T Bone Burnett, Mick Ronson and Scarlet Rivera, among others. The tour was unorthodox and almost spontaneous, and it took place just prior to the release of his fantastic Desire LP.

Led Zeppelin IV was released by Atlantic Records on November 8, 1971, and was a massive critical and commercial success, shipping 37 million copies worldwide. All of the songs were written by the band, with the exception of the Memphis Minnie blues song, When The Levee Breaks.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume 1: Various Artists UPDATED!

Last time around, we gave you Volume 2; this time it’s the original volume, updated for your listening pleasure. This is basically 5+ hours of sixties open stream, no interruptions, no advertising. 3:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris, Live at The Orpheum Theater, Boston, MA, on The Western Wall Tour, October 1, 1999 NEW!

It is not often that you have two amazingly talented singers on stage together. To say that they sound like angels is a phrase that is often over-used, but not in this case. The singing would be enough for me, but hearing them talk about the history of some of their songs and introducing their amazing band is an added bonus. This is the reason I spend so much time “finding” music out there. It’s a lot of work but, when you find something like this, it makes it all worthwhile.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Band

The Beatles. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. The Band. My big three. They started out as Bob Dylan’s back-up band. Then they managed to forge a musical career of their own that is unrivaled in many ways. Tonight we close out the programming by putting them In The Spotlight.

I don’t know what you’re waiting for. We have some people from Denmark and Norway who have been on for three days solid now. We’ve recently added listeners from Argentina and the Russian Federation. Maybe people here just take this shit for granted. I feel sorry for you. Your lives must be empty if you don’t listen to music. And if you’re still paying for this stuff, your wallets are also empty.

We’ve got some real interesting songs in this one. Some stuff I know I’ve never put in a playlist before. Includes songs from Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, The Byrds, Emmylou Harris, Eddie Cochran, Elvis Presley, ZZ Top, Lucinda Williams, Roberta Flack, and others! it’s a good one.

4:00 p.m. The Beatles: The Early Years

We certainly don’t play enough of our co-House Band here. But all of this stuff I research has made me understand that sometimes we forget just how fucking good they were. But Bob Dylan? He knew:

“We were driving through Colorado, we had the radio on, and eight of the Top 10 songs were Beatles songs…’I Wanna Hold Your Hand,’ all those early ones. They were doing things nobody was doing. Their chords were outrageous, just outrageous, and their harmonies made it all valid… I knew they were pointing the direction of where music had to go.”

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Irma Thomas

Somehow, there are those great singers who fall through the cracks when they should be much bigger. Irma Thomas is such a singer. She is a contemporary of Aretha Franklin, and she is known as The Soul Queen of New Orleans.

It’s Monday. It’s going to be rainy here with 50-mph winds. I’m turning it up and hunkering down. You should too.
