It’s ‘The Best of Chicago Blues,’ Our AOW, and the Tedeschi Trucks Band on Tuesday Bluesday, February 13, 2024

Good morning, bluesologists! Today we open with Windy City blues and close with ‘live’ Tedeschi Trucks Band. In between, it’s our AOW.

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday lineup:

9:00 a.m.  The Best of Chicago Blues: Various Artists

We start it all off with our great Chicago blues EP including Otis Rush, Willie Dixon, Albert King, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, Koko Taylor, Lowell Fulson, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy, Magic Slim, Sonny Boy Williamson, Son Seals, James Cotton, Paul Butterfield, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, Otis Spann and more!

4:00 p.m.  Album of The Week: Eldorado by Electric Light Orchestra

ELO’s first complete concept album is back for another spin this afternoon.

7:00 p.m.  Tedesch Trucks Band Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO, August 30, 2012

I would love to have been in this amazing natural music venue listening to this incredible blues-rock band. I’m not doing big venue concerts anymore. Done with that at my age. But if I could be persuaded to change my mind, it would be for Tedeschi Trucks. (Or The Beatles and Linda Ronstadt, which we know is not going to happen.)

Before, in between and after our programming, it’s our big, wide Open Stream. And who knows what The Music Mermaid will dredge up. See for yourselves. The button’s below.

It’s a Busy Monday With ‘Working Songs’, Rickie Lee Jones, Van Morrison and Elvis Costello, February 12, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! I was a bit overexuberant last night and went off the ledge on scheduling today. (We’re actually exploring a bit of late-night programming for our overseas listeners!)

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Working Songs: Various Artists

Quite appropriate on a Monday morning as the work week begins. You’ll hear from The Staple Singers, Van Morrison, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Lennon, Slim Harpo, Neil Young, Jim Croce, Little Feat, Bob Dylan, Jesse Winchester, Maria Muldaur and more!

4:00 p.m.  In The Spotlight: The Music of Rickie Lee Jones

Over five decades this great singer-songwriter has recorded songs in a variety genres, including jazz, rock, pop, soul and R&B.

7:00 p.m.  Van Morrison Live at The Bottom Line, New York, NY, November 1, 1978

Van the Man is a staple around these parts. We haven’t heard him for a while, so we thought it was about time we break him out of mothballs.

Here we have another great Elvis, but it’s Costello. You can love him or hate him, but the man broke barriers and is a hell of a singer-songwriter. He’s one of the very few of his generation that I actually listen to.

Another Monday in paradise…at least for me since my “weekends” fall on Sunday-Monday. We’ve got some great music today and we’re toying with late-night programming. We’ll see how it goes. Our overnight listeners are generally outside the U.S. Give us a listen.

Friday is Here and We’ve Got Harry Nilsson, Gordon Lightfoot and ‘Live’ Susan Tedeschi on Tap, February 9, 2024

Good morning, music lovers. Along with that we’ve got plenty of big, wide Open Stream to get us through the final work day of the week!

Here’s your musical lineup:

11:00 a.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: Harry Nilsson FINAL AIRING!

The late, great Harry Nilsson takes his final spin as our featured singer-songwriter, but do not worry. He’s a big part of our standard rotation.

4:00 p.m.  In The Spotlight: The Music of Gordon Lightfoot

We haven’t aired this one in a while. We have been remiss, and we are now making amends.

We close out the formal programming with a fantastic performance by Boston-born blues artist Susan Tedeschi, recorded for Austin City Limits. We’re proud to call Susan Tedeschi a native Bostonian.

A Trip To Motor City, Dylan’s “Planet Waves” and ‘Live’ Yusuf/Cat Stevens Later on Thursday, February 8, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! Today we take a trip to Motor City for the music that made America dance, hear our AOW, and are treated to a great Yusuf/Cat Stevens performance.

Here’s Thursday’s lineup:

9:00 a.m.  M is For Motown: Various Artists

The Motown sound with Barrett Strong, Eddie Kendricks, Eddie Holland, Edwin Starr, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Jackson Five, Kim Weston, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, The Temptations, The Contours, Rare Earth, Mary Wells, Tammi Terrell, Diana Ross & The Supremes and more!

4:00 p.m.  Album of The Week: Planet Waves by Bob Dylan

Dylan’s back with his very first no. 1 Billboard album in Planet Waves.

It’s always a great day when you can air a brand new magikat performance. Today we’ve got one from his 1976 tour.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With The Ladies, Bob Dylan’s AOW and a Howlin’ Wolf in Chicago, February 6, 2024

Good morning, bluesologists! We are back with ‘Ladies Sing The Blues’ to kick off our first Tuesday Bluesday of the month. I also stumbled upon some Howlin’ Wolf in my files!

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday lineup:

9:00 a.m.  Ladies Sing The Blues: Various Artists

And what a collection it is with Billie Holliday, Big Mama Thornton, Ruth Brown, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, Koko Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Christine McVie, Marcia Ball, Ellen McIlwaine, Susan Tedeschi, Irma Thomas, Tracy Nelson, Etta James, Linda Ronstadt, Sippie Wallace, Bessie Smith, Shawn Murphy, Angela Strehli, Aretha Franklin, The Blues Broads and more!

4:00 p.m.  Album of The Week: Planet Waves by Bob Dylan

Bob’s back for his second spin with our Album of The Week.

I had no idea that I even had these files. I stumbled upon them Saturday night. This one is late in Howlin’ Wolf’s career, but he still could bring it.

Today It’s ‘Water, Water Everywhere’, Some ‘Live’ Moody Blues and Harry Nilsson on Monday, February 5, 2024

Good morning, workforce! We’re back at it for another week in the salt mines, and also back here in The Mermaid Lounge to help get you through another week!

Here’s Monday’s music:

9:00 a.m.  Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

Yes, I say this every time. The earth is composed of 71% water and, if we don’t wake up soon, it could be more than that. You’ll hear Paul McCartney, Deep Purple, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Otis Redding, The Doobie Brothers, Valerie Carter, Bob Dylan, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Al Green, Loggins & Messina, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Linda Ronstadt, Spirit, The Grass Roots, The Beach Boys, Van Morrison, Lindisfarne, Bonnie Raitt, Steely Dan, Carole King, Tom Rush, America, Donovan, Johnny Rivers and more!

4:00 p.m.  The Moody Blues Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO, September 9, 1992

The show included the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and, believe it or not, it was the first time this progressive rock band played live backed by a symphony orchestra.

Today we introduce Harry Nilsson as our featured singer-songwriter, one of the best of his generation and a friend to many, including the members of a band called The Beatles. He was a really talented guy and the world was a better place with him in it.

The Weekend is Here! We’ve Got “Caribou,” Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP, and ‘Live’ Hot Tuna, Saturday, February 3, 2024

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m.  Album of The Week: Caribou by Elton John FINAL AIRING!

Another of our 50-year-old album club in 2024 is done. We move on to the next one on Sunday. Not telling. You’ll have to wait and see.

11:30 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

Being on the road is a popular musical subject. You’ll hear Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Asleep at The Wheel, The Traveling Wilburys, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield, Tom Rush, The Guess Who, Ray Charles, Marshall Tucker Band, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and more!

Hot Tuna Live at Sweetwater, Mill Valley, CA, January 27 & 28, 1992

This fine blues-rock band was formed in 1969 from the ashes of Jefferson Airplane by Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady and, although other band members have come and gone, they have remained at the helm.

I have one more day of servitude, but you can hang out here in The Mermaid Lounge with our Music Mermaid and have a fine day. Remember, we’re on 24/7 at no charge and with absolutely no commercial interruption.

4:00 p.m.  Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Dan Fogelberg FINAL AIRING!

Dan Fogelberg gets his final airing as our featured singer-songwriter for the week, but his music is in our standard rotation and you’ll hear him frequently here. A new artist will be introduced on Monday!

It is said that this was Bob Dylan’s final show before stardom; happening two weeks before the release of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan. Dylan (21 years old at the time) performed two seven-song sets on that day, and they were recorded. The tapes sat for half a century in the basement of Rolling Stone co-founder Ralph Gleason. Yes, it’s just seven songs, but it’s musical history in the making.

We Kick Off a New Month In a Dream State, Then It’s Elton John and ‘Live’ Leon Russell, on Thursday, February 1, 2024

Here’s your musical lineup:

4:00 p.m.  Album of The Week: Caribou by Elton John

7:00 p.m.  Leon Russell Live at The Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, CA, August 28, 1972

We’ve got an all-time favorite here live for you this evening. Sometimes he falls through the cracks, but Leon Russell is one of the greats.

Join us today. It’s another dreary, unseasonable day here in the Boston area. We just cannot seem to get our winter on, and that should be a concern for everyone. It’s been several years now of decline. But I digress. Come on in. The music’s fine.

We’re at Midweek With ‘The Female Species,’ Dan Fogelberg and Some ‘Live’ David Crosby, Wednesday, January 31, 2024

Good morning, music lovers. We are at the midweek stage and we’ve got our ‘Female Species’ multi-artist EP to kick things off!

Here’s your midweek musical lineup:

It’s not songs by women this morning, but songs about women. You’ll hear Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jackson Browne, Talking Heads, The Boogaloo Swamis, John Mayall, Hot Tuna, The Eagles, Elvis Presley, Electric Light Orchestra, Fleetwood Mac, Percy Sledge, The Beatles, America, Roy Orbison, Billy Joel, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, The Beach Boys, The Temptations, Linda Ronstadt and more!
