We Begin a New Week With Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Our ‘By The Numbers’ Playlist, Monday, May 10, 2021

Happy Monday, Humans! We’re kicking off a new week here from The Mermaid Lounge with some good stuff, as they say, including a new live performance by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

We have our ‘By the Numbers’ Playlist up at 11:00 a.m. today!

Here’s our Monday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Deb’s Stream: By The Numbers, Various Artists

Here’s a fun one we haven’t heard in a while. Great songs with numbers either in the title or the lyrics from The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, The Searchers, The Doors, Mudcrutch, J.J. Cale, Steely Dan, Asleep at The Wheel, Emmylou Harris, The Grass Roots, Stevie Nicks, and more!

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Led Zeppelin

It has been a while between playings for this particular playlist as well, but here it is, and updated from the last airing as well.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Live at TD Garden, Boston, MA, June 13, 2008 NEW!

This one is new to us, the live show by The Heartbreakers from Boston’s TD Garden. This band never disappoints on stage and this performance is no exception.

It’s dismal here today from a weather perspective, a rainy and cool spring day. It’s a perfect day for music that will chase away the doldrums. That’s what we’re all about.

Lucinda Williams Live, Laura Nyro In the Spotlight, Our Album of The Week, and LIVE DEAD, Saturday, May 8, 2021

Happy Saturday, Musicologists! It’s our usual rockin’ Saturday here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’re loaded with great stuff today, starting with Lucinda Williams.

Lucinda Williams, who had a stroke last year, is ready to return to action and we are celebrating!

Here’s Saturday’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Lucinda Williams Live at Austin City Limits, The Moody Theatre, December 5, 1998

It recently came to light that Lucinda Williams suffered a stroke late last year. She is now ready to sing again, and we here in The Mermaid Lounge are happy about that. Today, we have her live at Austin City Limits.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Nothing But A Breeze by Jesse Winchester

Jesse Winchester remains one of the most underrated singer-songwriters of his generation, and today we have the final airing of his album, Nothing But A Breeze. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a new Album of The Week.

6:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Laura Nyro

Laura Nyro is another of those singer-songwriters who sometimes flies under the radar. She has written songs that have put many people on the charts. But there’s nothing like hearing Laura Nyro sing her own compositions. You can do that here today.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Albuquerque Civic Auditorium, Albuquerque, New Mexico, November 17, 1971 NEW!

We’re back to new live performances from The Grateful Dead this week. This time we have them live from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Saturday is a great day to listen in, people. It’s the start of the weekend after a long work week. We’re not-for-profit; we don’t ask for your credit card number or your personal information. We do not run advertising. All we do is play great music. Just pull up a tab and click the link below.

Bonnie Raitt Live at The Troubadour, Van Morrison In the Spotlight, and Our Album of The Week, Thursday, May 6, 2021

Good Morning, Kids! Well, after two solid days of nothing but rain the sun shines brightly outside The Mermaid Lounge! We’ve got some great music on tap for today also!

We’ve got Bonnie Raitt live at the famed Troubadour to kick off our programming!

Here’s Thursday’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Bonnie Raitt Live at The Troubadour, West Hollywood, California, February 15, 1972

One of the world’s greatest performers at one of the world’s most vaunted venues right here. I’ve seen Bonnie Raitt in several small venues in Boston in my lifetime. There’s nothing like that experience.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Nothing But A Breeze by Jesse Winchester

Our second to last airing of this fine album. Our final will be on Saturday. Catch it while you can, folks! Jesse Winchester is one of the most underappreciated singer-songwriters of his generation.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Van Morrison

We haven’t heard this particular playlist in a while, so it’s a great time to break it out. I’ll say it again, Van Morrison is an insufferable cad. Don’t believe a word that comes from his mouth when he tells you he’s fighting for your freedom when he wants to pack in the tour venues during COVID-19. What he wants to do is line his pocket. I’ve also seen Van several times and he’s not exactly the nicest guy on stage either. But his music? One of the very best here.

Tune us in, folks. We are most definitely not-for-profit, and that is tough to find on the regular airwaves these days. Earlier this week, I drove in a U-Haul truck to move my daughter back to Boston. All they had was regular radio. I opted for silence instead.

Friday Brings Joni Mitchell’s Shadows & Light Tour, and Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure, April 30, 2021

Good Friday Morning! We have a lot of Open Stream today, but the programming we offer is outstanding on this fine end to the month of April.

This evening, we bring you Tom Petty, DJ.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Joni Mitchell, The Shadows & Light Tour, Live at The Santa Barbara County Bowl, September 9, 1979 NEW!

This concert brings what many people feel is the greatest of all Joni Mitchell’s stage bands, composed of Pat Metheny (guitar), Jaco Pastorius (bass), Lyle Mays (keyboards), Michael Brecker (sax), and Don Alias (drums)…although I saw the Court & Spark tour as well with Tom Scott & The L.A. Express and thought that was pretty fabulous as well. But we quibble here, because no matter how you feel, this one’s a winner.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Peculiar Picks, Highlights From The Buried Treasure Show

Long before there was a Tom Petty Radio on Sirius XM, there was Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure Show where he morphed into our favorite DJ. I don’t know why they call this his “peculiar” picks. Frankly, Petty could give a less on the history of rock and roll, and that’s basically what he did with his radio show. He shared his personal record collection and educated us all. Here we offer you Mr. Petty, disc jockey. Enjoy. It’s a great multi-artist playlist.

Good day to tune us in for sure. I know. We say that every day, but it’s true. We’re not-for-profit and we take no advertising. We never ask you for a subscription, a credit card, or personal data.

We Move Into Mid-Week With Some ‘Live’ Hot Tuna at The Fillmore and Dusty Springfield In The Spotlight, Wednesday, April 28, 2021

Good Morning, Kids! We’re reached mid-week in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got light programming and lots of Open Stream today, highlighted by a brand new live performance by Hot Tuna!

Today we give you a taste of amazing Hot Tuna!

Here’s your mid-week line-up:

11:00 a.m. Hot Tuna Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA, March 4, 1988 NEW!

This great band was originally intended as an acoustic spinoff from the Jefferson Airplane, but it soon became the full-time project of its founders, Jack Cassady and Jorma Kaukonen. They became a popular road band in the seventies, and eventually mixed in some electric. One of the best in our book.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Dusty Springfield

Rolling Stone has called Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien, also known as Dusty Springfield, Britain’s “best ever pop singer,” and we totally agree. She embodies the descripton ‘blue-eyed soul’ building a career on a deep voice that emulated the Motown sound that she loved. Those who overlook Dusty are quite remiss. Her career was in full throttle for forty years, from the 50’s to the 90’s.

Great day to tuna (I meant this; not a typo) us in. I know, it was a bad attempt, but it’s early and it worked for me. We’re not-for-profit. We’re in it for the music every single day. Give us a shot, and help us spread the word.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday in The Lounge With The Blues Project, Eric Clapton & Friends, and “Damn The Torpedoes,” April 27, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! It’s another Tuesday Bluesday here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got a pretty great programming gig coming up today!

We’ve got The Blues Project on tap for today!

Here’s today’s Blues line-up!

This live recorded album was the debut of The Blues Project, and was recorded between November 24-27, 1965 at the fabled Cafe Au Go Go in Greenwich Village, New York.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Damn The Torpedoes! by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

The second airing of this most magificent album; the one that catapulted The Heartbreakers into the limelight and launched a 40-year love affair with their fans.

8:00 p.m. Eric Clapton & Friends: The Crossroads Guitar Festival Revisited

Tune us in on a Tuesday Bluesday. It’s a great day to give us a shot, people. A splendid time is guaranteed for all!

It’s a Mudcrutch Monday, We Have ‘Live’ Jesse Winchester, and The Doors In The Spotlight, April 26, 2021

Ah, yes, another week begins in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got some great programming, including new ‘live’ Jesse Winchester, a great singer-songwriter who is sometimes forgotten.

Singer-songwriter Jesse Winchester, a man who lives through the voices of others will live through his own today.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Mudcrutch Live at The Fonda Theatre, West Hollywood, June 26, 2016

This was the same tour that brought Tom Petty’s “other band” through Boston’s House of Blues. I will forever kick myself in the ass for missing this opportunity, but I thought I had many more in the future. Sadly, I was wrong. Mudcrutch may not be The Heartbreakers, but they are a great band nonetheless.

3:00 p.m. Jesse Winchester Live at The Bijou Cafe, Philadelphia, May 26, 1977 NEW!

I’ve seen Jesse Winchester twice in my lifetime, both times as an opening act for Emmylou Harris. When Emmylou breaks into Defying Gravity, few know that the song was written by Winchester. He has made a lot of music over the yeears, and he is appreciated here in The Mermaid Lounge, where we have just added his catalogue to our general rotation and will feature some of his live performances.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Doors

I’ve been missing these crazy guys lately. In just four years before Morrison’s untimely death, the left us a hell of a musical catalogue. Tonight we put them In the Spotlight.

Tune us in. You won’t regret it. Join your friends from Germany, Poland, Norway, the Faroe Islands, Canada, and points beyond!

It’s a Big Day for The Brits With The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and The Moody Blues, Friday, April 23, 2021

Good Morning, British Music Lovers! It’s a bit of a departure from the norm here today in The Mermaid Lounge, beginning with some new Beatles material (new to us, that is).

Pop Go The Beatles!

Here’s today’s line-up!

11:00 a.m. The Beatles Live at The BBC, Volume One: Pop Go The Beatles NEW!

Back in the day, the Beatles ruled, and with good reason. I’m not sure anyone could appreciate how tight a musical band they really were for their time. Even to this day, people who think the computerized shit produced in this generation is actually music and the Beatles didn’t have a clue. That’s a load of bullshit. And by the way, real musicians do not share the fickle public’s opinions. Neither do we. All of these songs were recorded live at BBC Studios between during June, July and August of 1963…before Beatlemania took hold.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd was formed in London in 1965, and became one of the premier psychedelic rock bands. The band’s hallmarks were extended compositions, sound experimentation, cosmic lyrics, and rather elaborate live shows. They were true pioneers of the progressive rock sound.

7:00 p.m. The Moody Blues Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, Colorado, with The Colorado Symphony Orchestra, November 9, 1972

The Moody Blues were formed in Birmingham, England in 1964, and initially came to prominence playing R & B music. Early on, they fused rock with classical, and became pioneers of what is known as art rock. Their album Days of Future Passed is considered one of the earliest successful concept albums.

This would be a jolly good day to tune us in for the first time, I might add. Join your fellow listeners from Germany, the UK, Norway, the Russian Federation, France, and points beyond who tune in as the U.S. goes to sleep!

The Queen of Soul Takes The Spotlight, Dylan Live ’62-66, and the Foos With Our Album of The Week, Thursday, April 22, 2021

Good Morning, Kids! It’s Thursday in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got some great programming for you today as we prepare to launch a new program tomorrow!

Aretha Franklin circa 1970s. Today she’s In the Spotlight.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin is the undisputed Queen of Soul in these here parts. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Today, we proudly put her In the Spotlight with a retrospective of her great songs.

3:00 p.m. Bob Dylan: Rare Performances From The Copyright Collection ’62-66

We’re pulling this one out of the vault. It has been a long time since we’ve aired this. We’ve been very remiss, so we’re making amends today.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Medicine At Midnight by Foo Fighters

We’re winding down on our Album of The Week. We’ve got one more airing on Saturday before it goes away, so you might want to put this on your calendar for this evening. It’s a little different for the Foos, but it’s a great album.

Here we go again: We’re not-for-profit and we don’t compromise. We don’t buy music from either Amazon or Apple. We don’t take advertising. We dont’ continually interrupt the musical flow. What more could you possibly want?

It’s Wilbury Wednesday Here in The Mermaid Lounge, and We’ve Got ‘Live’ Bob Marley Later, April 21, 2021

Good Morning and welcome to Wilbury Wednesday. We’ve got an excellent couple of hours of Wilbury music you will not hear anywhere else. We tell you why below!

Join us for Bob Marley & The Wailers Live from Santa Barbara later today!

Here’s your mid-week line-up:

12:00 p.m. The Traveling Wilburys Complete: The Bootleg Series

This material was offered to us by a listener. We have no idea where it came from, but we went on an extensive search for Wilbury “bootlegs” before this and could find nothing. We employ a musical don’t ask, don’t tell here. There are demos, rough cuts, outtakes, and session music. Chris Hillman even pays a visit. Enjoy!

6:00 p.m. Bob Marley & The Wailers Live From The Santa Barbara County Bowl, November 25, 1979

The legend live. There’s nothing like it. We’re on a mission here to create long-playing playlists, if you will. Reggae and Ska is next on the list. You can bet that Bob Marley & The Wailers will be a big part of that effort. This is a great live performance, so we hope you’ll tune it in.

In between this programming, we’ve got nothing but wide Open Stream as chosen by our Music Mermaid. She’s got great taste, and she’s not adverse to picking up a couple of playlists here and there. You’ll have to listen carefully.
