Good morning, musicologists. Although not everyone celebrates Easter Sunday, it is a family and friends day today and we are enjoying both. But the Music Mermaid is on duty here in the lounge on a wide Open Stream day!
Enjoy your day! We’ll be here to welcome you back on Monday morning and play the absolute best music on the planet!
Good morning, music lovers! We’re here on another lighter-than-usual programming day with plenty of our great wide Open Stream. We kick things off with June Carter’s daughter and Johnny Cash’s stepdaughter, Carlene Carter.
Here’s your musical lineup:
11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Two Sides To Every Woman by Carlene Carter NEW!
Carlene Carter boasts the lineage of The Carter Family. She’s the daughter of June Carter and her first husband, the stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, and the stepsister of country great Rosanne Cash. She’s had a rough-and-tumble life with multiple failed relationships (including a marriage to Nick Lowe, and a long-standing relationship with late, great Heartbreaker Howie Epstein), and plenty of drug offenses, but she has made some supremely good music over the years. Much of her early stuff, like this album, has been overlooked and we hope to change that here.
3:00 p.m. A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists
We’re back with our big, bad soul and rhythm & blues EP with music from Motown to Muscle Shoals to Atlantic and beyond. You’ll hear Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Ronettes, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Jimmy Ruffin, The Drifters, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Carla Thomas, James Brown, The Shirelles, Etta James, Curtis Mayfield, Sam & Dave, The Staple Singers, Nina Simone, LaVern Baker, The Supremes, Sam Cooke, Edwin Starr, Fontella Bass, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Irma Thomas, The Box Tops, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Percy Sledge and more!
We’re preparing to go out with a bang here in 2023 and open up a brand new year with some new music and some new ideas. Stick around. We’ll remain free of charge and free of advertising. We’re all about the music.
Good morning, weekenders! Yes, it’s finally Saturday and The Music Mermaid has her selections all queued up for this fine day. Read on for the details!
Here are your musical details:
9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Elvis Presley by Elvis Presley FINAL AIRING!
We bid farewell to Elvis’ debut album today, a fine piece of music from what I personally consider his best time, right around 1956 and the Nashville/Sun sessions. Tomorrow, we’ll have a new album.
12:00 p.m. Under the Influence: Various Artists
Ah, yes. In my youth, some of my best times were spent under the influence. Today, you’ll hear Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glen Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, The Beatles, Talking Heads, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man and more!
8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: Walter Becker & Donald Fagan NEW!
There’s a thing out there on social media asking the best bands of the seventies. Had it not been for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Steely Dan would have been my number one. They’re a very close number two. We love them here in The Mermaid Lounge, and they are that good because of the singer-songwriter duo that put them on the map.
We are officially at the weekend. It’s rainy here. And I have one more day left in the hardware hellhole, but the foot traffic will be down. Regardless, the weekend has arrived here and you should take full advantage of that by hitting the button below.
Good morning, oversleepers! That’s me, and I’m on the run, so this blog entry will be quick today!
Here’s your musical menagerie:
9:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists
You know, like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Byrds, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Donovan, Jonathan Edwards, John Lee Hooker, Neil Young, Velvet Underground, The Beatles, The Traveling Wiburys, The Rolling Stones, John Prine and many more!
4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Roger McGuinn
Round two for our singer-songwriting hero.
8:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at The Orpheum Theater, Boston, MA, May 14, 1995
I had the pleasure of being at this particular show and what I remember most is that Valerie Carter opened the show and helped out Linda Ronstadt on stage. It was a great performance by Ronstadt made memorable by the vocals of Valerie Carter.
That’s it. I’m off to the work-a-day world. Later.
Good Morning, Musicologists! Our journey today is very eclectic. That’s not to say it isn’t every day, but today it’s a bit different. Read on for the details!
We’ve got five hours of Motown for you starting mid-afternoon!
Here’s your musical landscape:
11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Creole Moon by Dr. John NEW!
We love Dr. John here in The Mermaid Lounge, and part of the reason we love him is that he’s not constrained by tradition. But with Creole Moon, he went back to his strength: New Orleans R & B, his musical roots, and we’re glad he did. I spent several years back and forth to and from New Orleans both on business and for pleasure, and I got totally hooked on its unique musical sound. Dr. John is a huge part of that. Listen in at 11:00 a.m.
3:00 p.m. M is For Motown: Various Artists
What could be better to follow up Dr. John than some R & B from Motown? Nothing. That’s what. We bring you back to that music that inspired so many. The Beatles just loved those great girl bands. You’ll hear Barrett Strong, Eddie Kendricks, Eddie Holland, Edwin Starr, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Jackson Five, Kim Weston, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, The Temptations, The Contours, Mary Wells, Rare Earth, Tammi Terrell, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Marvelettes, The Spinners, Jimmy Ruffin, and many more. This is five hours of uninterrupted R & B and soul from Motown!
Hey, it’s Sunday Funday. Finally. A day of total rest. Remember, if there is a big guy (or girl) he or she took this day off. Everyone gets a break. Hell, I’m in favor of bring back the Blue Laws here in Massachusetts. Close all the retail establishments on Sunday and let’s get back to the stuff that’s important.
I know. Happy April Fool’s Day! Thought we forgot, didn’t you? Well, we are on wide open stream today because we can. Tomorrow we’ll be kicking off the weekend with some new material. We’ve been working on some new playlists, and those are coming up!
Hello Music Lovers, I just want you to know we are up and running on wide open stream with no shut down as I try to get past COVID-19. Perhaps in a couple of days we’ll return to some programming. I will keep you posted.
Good Morning, Music Lovers! We have a pretty eclectic line-up today here in The Mermaid Lounge.
Steve Winwood and Traffic.
Here’s today’s line-up:
1:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Pink Floyd
We haven’t heard this one in a while, so it’s a good day to break this puppy out. Today we feature a band founded by students Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright in 1967. Under Barrett’s leadership, they released their debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, with two charting singles.
5:00 p.m. The Shadow: 09 Murder On Approval
Not sure why anyone would approve of murder, but hey, that’s for The Shadow to figure out.
8:00 p.m. Traffic and Blind Faith Super Jam
We really love Steve Winwood here in The Mermaid Lounge. This is our way of paying tribute to a guy who has made so much good music in so many bands, starting with The Spencer Davis Group when he was just fifteeen years old.
Tune us in. We’re free 24/7 without interruption. No fees. No subscriptions. And no personal information required.
Good Day, Music Lovers! Here we are on another (mostly) Open Stream Wednesday until, of course, Dan Fogelberg and The Shadow drop by later.
Dan Fogelberg was a folk, soft rock superstar, a hell of a songwriter with a smooth, comforting voice. His album, Souvenirs, is one of the best albums ever made.
Here’s today’s line-up:
All Day (Mostly) Open Stream Wednesday
We’re circulating 27,000 songs daily. Pretty sure you won’t hear the same song twice over a several day period from The Mermaid Lounge. We add new songs monthly.
6:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Dan Fogelberg UPDATED!
Dan Fogelberg is a soft rock superstar, from our perspective. He’s written so many good songs over his career, and has made so many albums, but has never gotten the commercial airplay he deserves. We are in the process of uploading his entire catalogue.
9:00 p.m. The Shadow: 09 Murder on Approval
The second airing of this week’s episode of The Shadow. It’s all about murder, folks.
Tune us in. We’re running 24/7 at no charge. And we’ve got some great music.
