Probably the most iconic album released during the Summer of Love phase was this brilliant effort by The Beatles. They would follow this up later with Magical Mystery Tour, but this one was a tough act to follow.

3:00 p.m.     Elvis Presley: The Sun Sessions   NEW!

Elvis Aaron Presley, known simply as Elvis, passed away at Graceland 43 years ago yesterday. Elvis was the inspiration for many of the musicians we are celebrating on this radio station. And that’s why we celebrate him today.

There were many players during the Summer of Love, and many may not make it to the spotlight. Nevertheless, they gave us some great music. Both The Beatles and The Doors had two album releases in 1967. This was the second for The Doors and it is most definitely Album of the Week-worthy even though we did feature it once last week. So, here it is again!

This is always my favorite Sunday of the month. The only question ever is do I choose Volume 1 or Volume 2. Today, the decision was easy because it’s everything the latter part of the sixties were about musically. Features The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, The Yardbirds, The Beach Boys, Janis Joplin, The Mamas & The Papas, Donovan, The Zombies, and so much more. Before Woodstock in 1969, there was the Monterey International Pop Festival held at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in California from June 16-18, 1967. The Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who, Johnny Rivers, Simon & Garfunkel, The Grateful Dead, The Mamas & The Papas and many others all graced the stage. It also marked the introduction of Otis Redding to the world.

The Doors influenced  music in immense ways in a very short period of time. Who knows what could have come our way down the road. Morrison was, without a doubt, a poet. And the band was really good. The whole package, gone before we knew it. The Doors actually had two album releases in 1967, their debut album (The Doors) and Strange Days (featured yesterday).

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Are You Experienced? by The Jimi Hendrix Experience

With one album, Hendrix went from struggle to stardom. This album is heralded as one of the most amazing debuts in rock history.

7:00 p.m.     The Best of The Summer of Love! Their Satanic Majesties Request by The Rolling Stones  NEW!

The Stones’ only foray into psychedelic music before returning to their roots was not one of my favorite efforts. However, it was the natural progression at the time, and to leave the album out would be egregious. (And any album that has She’s A Rainbow on it can’t be all bad.) I just thought the Stones felt uncomfortable with the genre more than anything. Contributing to this was the fact that the entire recording process was a literal shitshow. The link provides the details.

The music released during 1967 was, literally, a cultural smorgasbord. It was musical nirvana from Haight-Ashbury all the way to my little street in Medford, where my friends and I lay in the driveway that summer with a transistor listening to WMEX. Back in the day, AM was king.

6:00 p.m.  The Jefferson Airplane Live in Copenhagen, Denmark, August 28, 1968   NEW!

The Jefferson Airplane was formed in 1965, and pioneered psychedelic rock. They helped to define the San Francisco Sound, and were the first band to achieve commercial success. Their album, Surrealistic Pillow, is considered one of the most significant recordings of the Summer of Love.
