The Beach Boys’ Smile album never really came to fruition. It was actually abandoned back in 1967. In 2011, The Smile Sessions was released…and in several forms. You can read about it in detail here. What we give you this week is one version and it’s the 19 songs that theoretically present what the final version of Smile would have been. It’s a great trip.

1:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: Tom Petty’s 65 Greatest Songs UPDATED!

A few days ago, the University of Florida posthumously awarded Tom Petty a Doctorate in Music, adding to his musical legend. I imagine that most people know this was an honor long deserved. (If you don’t, this is probably not the radio station you want to listen to.) Today we present our very subjective list of Petty’s best songs, not just with the Heartbreakers, but also with Mudcrutch, the Traveling Wilburys, and as a solo artist. It has been updated and, guess what, if I were to do this over, it could be different.

If you are only familiar with Tom Petty’s “hits,” this is a good chance for you to step out and hear some of his lesser known songs. That’s why there are 65 of them.

This will be a fun day for Petty fans everywhere (and that will include me). The rest of the day is dedicated to wide Open Stream of continually rotating 27,000+ songs. And all of this is free because we’re not a business. We’re a music emporium.

It’s a testament to their longevity, but I will say it again: Any band without Jerry Garcia is not The Grateful Dead. Period. Without the rest of the band, they’re really not The Grateful Dead. That still stands.

11:00 a.m. Our Thanksgiving Tradition: The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree by Arlo Guthrie

We’ve been playing this as our Thanksgiving tradition since we started back in 2017, and we continue on today with all 18 minutes and 34 seconds. The song, recorded in 1967, occupies one entire side of Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant album. As Guthrie himself explains it, the restaurant is not really called Alice’s Restaurant, even though the song is about Alice and the restaurant. That factoid is in keeping with the song’s continuing mystery. You can find the lyrics here should you want to sing along.

2:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

Etta James’ career began the year I was born, in 1954. Right up through 2012, her big, earthy voice has interpreted many genres, including R & B/soul, the blues, gospel, jazz, and rock n’ roll. She won six Grammy awards, and 17 blues music awards, and she is a resident of the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame (1993), The Blues Hall of Fame (2001), and Grammy Hall of Fame (1999).
