Good Morning, Bluesologists! We’re heading down to Louisiana today for some blues, and we bring the second airing of our Album of The Week by Valerie Carter.

Louisiana Blues gives us both the jazzy New Orleans-style blues and the swampy blues encompassing the Cajun/Zydeco influence

We think this week’s Album of The Week fits in just fine on this Tuesday Bluesday because Valerie Carter’s first solo album is just a little bit of everything, including just a bit bluesy. She’s got the perfect voice for it.

7:00 p.m. The Best of Louisiana Blues, Volume Two: Various Artists

You’ll hear more of Clarence Frogman Henry, Slim Harpo, and Muddy Waters in our second set, but you’ll also hear Smiley Lewis, The Big Bopper, Earl King, Cookie & The Cupcakes, Rod Bernard, Frankie Ford, Joe Jones, and Big Boy Myles.

If It’s Monday, It Must be Mudcrutch, And We Have Our Great EP ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ To Start Things Off, October 4, 2021

Good Morning, Petty Fans! We’re back on the train today with Mudcrutch Monday Madness! But that comes up later on. We kick it all off with our great new EP about water.

This was one of those EP’s that was so much fun to do it just kept going. It wound up being just over four hours of great songs with references to water in either the title, the lyrics, or both. You’ll hear Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, Al Green, Gordon Lightfoot, Bonnie Raitt, The Stone Poneys, Valerie Carter, Elton John, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Loggins & Messina, Mudcrutch, Emmylou Harris, Tedeschi Trucks Band, The Beach Boys, The Grass Roots, and more!

7:00 p.m. Mudcrutch Monday Madness! The Full Catalogue

This playlist includes all of Mudcrutch, including the definitive live version of Hungry No More (a kickass song) recorded live at Boston’s House of Blues in 2016. It also includes the original version of Don’t Do Me Like That, which was originally a Mudcrutch song. This was the band that Tom Petty left Gainesville with when he made his move to L.A. to make music. It was the band that morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. And the rest, as they say, is history. EXCEPT, Tom Petty decided to bring Mudcrutch back to life in 2008 with its original members, including Tom Leadon on guitar (whose brother, Bernie, played with the Eagles) and Randall Marsh, his friend from Gainesville, on drums. As a member of Mudcrutch, Tom Petty was the bass player. Mudcrutch finally became a success in their own right. Their sound is awesome, and it’s different than The Hearbreakers even though the original Mudcrutch also had Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell. If you’re a true Petty fan, then you already know Mudcrutch. If you’re just a lover of The Heartbreakers’ hits and you’re not a deep digger, this is your opportunity.

It’s Petty month here in The Mermaid Lounge. We won’t be obnoxious about it, but we will be playing more Tom Petty than usual, and that is always a good thing. We remain all about the music. For those who do not know Valerie Carter, this album is a great way to start that process. It is so hard to categorize this album (her debut album). It’s a little bit folk, it’s a little bit country, it’s got some jazz moments and it’s a lot of R & B and funk. Carter has an amazing voice that can handle it all. Just A Stone’s Throw was produced by Lowell George (Little Feat), George Massenburg, and Maurice White (Earth, Wind & Fire). It featured musicians like Jackson Browne, Bob Glaub, Herb Pederson, John Sebastion and literally all of Little Feat. Her back-up singers included Linda Ronstadt, Deniece Williams, Herb Pederson, Lowell George, and Maurice White. Yeah, you’ve got all week to tune it in, but why wait?

3:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

We have two massive sixties rotation EP’s, and this is the first from the early sixties to the mid-sixties. There’s some overlap in artists from one to the other, but none of the songs overlap. This is just over three hours of music recorded during The Heartbreakers’ legendary residency at The Fillmore West back in 1997. It is testament to the fact that this band is undoubtedly one of the greatest bands ever to step onto a stage and engage with an audience. I can honestly say that I’ve never seen better, and I’ve seen a hell of a lot of live performances in my lifetime.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Traveling Wilburys, Volume One FINAL AIRING

We bid a fond farewell to Volume One of the Traveling Wilburys two great albums. We’ll have the other sometime during Tom Petty Month for sure.

We kick off Tom Petty month with Hypnotic Eye, the final studio album by The Heartbreakers released in 2014. It is not our album of the week because it has already been our album of the week. The reason we kick off with this album is it’s hard for a band to be this good nearly forty years on. In my mind, this album competes with Damn The Torpedos as The Heartbreakers’ best album. And The Heartbreakers were still packing them in. On the Hypnotic Eye tour, they played to 40,000 people in Boston’s historic Fenway Park.

Today’s the day, folks. We kick off Tom Petty month. Our photo today is not meant to be morbid. We celebrate Tom Petty’s life and contribution to music, both of which were huge. We merely wanted to show the outpouring of fan love that Tom Petty earned over his gigantic career. He is still missed, but his music lives on.

It’s A Beatles Kind of Day As We Close Out The Month; We’ve Also Got The Wilburys With the AOW, and Our ‘On The Map’ Playlist Later, Thursday, September 30, 2021

In spite of the rumors, The Beatles were still loose and enjoying each other at the end.

11:00 a.m. The Beatles: The Let It Be Sessions

October is a big month. The 50th Anniversary 5-CD set of Let It Be will be released on October 15 replete with remixes (McCartney was unhappy with Phil Spector’s versions of some of the songs; and I agree), outtakes, alternate versions, and other goodies. Peter Jackson’s six-hour Let It Be documentary will be released on October 15 as well, with the companion book, The Beatles: Get Back, coming on October 12.

We’ve had this little gem for a while now and have played it before. We thought this would be an appropriate way to kick out the September jams as we get ready for October.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Traveling Wilburys, Volume One

Back with our next-to-last airing of this great album. October will also be Tom Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge. And you’ll hear plenty of the Wilburys as well during this time.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday with Eric Clapton & Friends, Stevie Ray Vaughn “Live” and Our Album of The Week, September 28, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! We have a great blues line-up today sandwiched around our latest Album of The Week.

11:00 a.m. Eric Clapton & Friends: Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, & Joe Cocker, Live at Royal Albert Hall, UK, September 20, 1983

Back in 1983, a bunch of musicians got together to play a benefit concert at Royal Albert Hall to raise money for multiple sclerosis. The event was organized by Ronnie Lane of the band Faces, who was a victim of the disease himself. The result was a great set of 18 songs of straight-up blues and blues-rock numbers. Even better, Clapton, Page and Beck were all once lead guitarists for The Yardbirds, but this was the first time they’d ever been on stage together. Many other great musicians were also involved in this benefit. You can read more about it here.

7:00 p.m. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble Live at The Bluebird Lounge, Ft. Worth, TX, September 30, 1979

There’s not much more you can say about Stevie Ray Vaughan that hasn’t already been said. He was on the road continually during 1978 and 1979, and one stop was The Bluebird Lounge. It is believed that the owner of the place, Robert “Bluebird” Ealey was sitting in on guitar and vocals.

Hell, it’s Tuesday Bluesday here in the lounge. Before you know it, we’ll be coming up on Blues Week here (sometime during the winter when we need it most). We’re out there sourcing some new stuff now. This is a great time to acclimate yourself to our station.

There are supergroups, then there are SUPERGROUPS. This one is in the latter category. Every poll I’ve seen taken in every music magazine and on every music website puts The Traveling Wilburys at the top of the supergroup heap, and we here in The Mermaid Lounge wholeheartedly agree. It started with George Harrison needing to record a “B side” for a release. The rest is history. You can read about it here.

3:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-to-Z: Various Artists

Folk music is an amazing genre. I remember when folk music purists were upset the day Bob Dylan picked up an electric guitar. Dylan changed the face of folk and made it much more accessible to many people who may have ignored it. You’ll hear Bob Dylan in this EP. You’ll also hear Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, The Beatles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Stone Poneys (featuring Linda Ronstadt), Bruce Springsteen, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, John Prine, Tom Rush, The Wallflowers, John Prine, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Jesse Winchester, Odetta, Peter, Paul & Mary, and many more!
