We celebrate Ringo’s 81st birthday today by weighing in on my favorite Ringo Starr music as a Beatle, as a solo artist, and as a drummer. I hear a lot of bullshit disparaging remarks out there about Ringo’s drumming. Talk is cheap. His peers in the drumming world don’t share that attitude. In fact, Ringo is one of the most respected drummers on the planet, and The Beatles went to great lengths to lure him away from Rory Storm and the Hurricanes.

We’re Winding Down on The Fillmore Fiesta, But We’re Not Done Yet! And The Heartbreakers’ New “Angel Dream” Owns Our Album of The Week, Sunday, July 4, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Running a tad late today because I slept in just a bit. This old body gets tired after a week in retail hell. But never you mind. We’ve got a great grand finale for all Fillmorians today, and a brand new Tom Petty effort for our Album of The Week.

We wrap up our Fillmore Festival today with some great stuff!

Here’s your July 4th line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Angel Dream by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers NEW!

This is the new release from the Petty estate, celebrating the 25th anniversary of their soundtrack album, She’s The One. It’s a reimagined vision of great music, which also happens to include four previously-unreleased tunes. There’s always a bonus because The Heartbreakers have so much unreleased music yet to go. One is a long version of Supernatural Radio, one of my favorite tunes and the other is an unbelievable studio version of J.J. Cale’s Thirteen Days, another of my favorites which the Heartbreakers have done live in the past. Two others are brand new songs.

There is no doubting Petty’s musical genius at this point. But what is evident and what must always be said is how dedicated his bandmates were to his musical cause, and just how fucking brilliant they all were together.

3:00 p.m. Laura Nyro Live at The Fillmore East, New York, March 30, 1971 NEW!

Laura Nyro called this performance Spread Your Wings and Fly, but we here in The Mermaid Lounge believe she did that for her entire career. This is one of my favorite performances ever. The Fillmore East closed its doors a few days earlier than West, on June 27, 1971. Laura Nyro’s performance was one of the finals, just a few months before the end.

7:00 p.m. Fillmore, The Last Days: Various Artists NEW!

Here we have a multi-artist effort of live performances at the Fillmore West just before the doors closed. Most of the bands are from the Bay area, and include Quicksilver Messenger Service, Santana, the Elvin Bishop Group, Boz Scaggs, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Cold Blood, Taj Mahal, and The Grateful Dead (life would not be complete without them), and many more!

And with that, our Fillmore Festival is done for now. We have a lot more Fillmore performances in our vault, so we’ll be doing this again for sure. Just not sure when, but you’ll be the first to know. It’s the fourth of July, folks. I’m not a flag waver, and I hate the word “patriot” because I really believe the right-wing uses that term way too much. They are actually “hatriots.” So, I’m listening to music. That’s the best way to celebrate.

Fillmore Forward With The Allman Brothers Band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and LIVE DEAD Later, Saturday, July 3, 2021

Onward Fillmorians! We move forward with three great bands today from both Fillmore venues. Our only exception to the Fillmore rule will be the final airing of Kate Taylor’s Album of The Week.

It was tough accessing some of the actual posters for these dates, but we did our best to choose alternatives wisely!

We have all of these legendary recordings in our vast collection. These are the best culled over the 1971 Allman Brothers appearances.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Sister Kate by Kate Taylor FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of Kate Taylor’s great album from 1971. We eagerly await her brand new August 2021 release. Tomorrow, however, when you roll out of bed we have a masterful selection for you.

6:00 p.m. Creedence Clearwater Revival Live at The Fillmore West, July 4 1971

CCR delivers their special brand of swamp music in what is the final day of The Fillmore West’s existence under Bill Graham. It’s hard to believe these guys were born and raised in Berkeley, California. Their ‘born on the bayou’ sound was truly amazing. One of the best bands to ever exist.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Fillmore West, July 2, 1971

We resurrect this great show for our Fillmore extravaganza. What would this celebration be without the ultimate jam band’s inclusion?

This is a great warm-up for tomorrow’s grand finale! We hope you’ll tune our special July 4 celebration. Forget all the flag-waving and fireworks bullshit. This is where the party’s at.

The Fillmore Extravaganza Continues With Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Janis Joplin, and Hot Tuna, Friday, July 2, 2021

Good Morning, Fillmorians! We continue our celebration of Bill Graham’s magical musical vision today on our way to July 4th. We’ve got quite the line-up for you all today!

Here’s today’s fantastic line-up:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, January 10-February 7, 1997 NEW!

By all standards, the Heartbreakers’ 20-show residency at The Fillmore West in 1997 is the stuff musical legends are made of. You can read about it here in an article written after Petty’s untimely death in 2017. This is the first time we’ve aired the amazing three hours of music that came from that residency. It covers not only the Heartbreakers’ own hits, but also some great covers from the artists who inspired them.

We hear that the Petty estate and his bandmates are working on their own multi-album effort somewhere down the road that will include the special guests who came up on stage to sing with them. We loo forward to that as well.

4:00 p.m. Janis Joplin Live at The Fillmore, New York, February 12, 1969

Janis was no stranger to The Fillmore East and West. This particular performance was during Janis’ transitional period. She had left Big Brother & The Holding Company and moved on with the Komic Blues Band. The only hold-over from Big Brother was guitarist Sam Andrew. The goal of the band was to play more R & B and soul music than the hard rock she was known for. Admittedly, the band’s performance got mixed reviews, but there was absolutely no denying Janis Joplin’s on-stage charisma and performance.

9:00 p.m. Hot Tuna Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, March 4, 1988

Hot Tuna rose out of the ashes of Jefferson Airplane, a collaboration between Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, that played mostly blues-rock and Americana music. Although members have come and gone over the years, including Grace Slick herself, the band largely remained their baby.

We hope you’ll join us as much as you can today to celebrate the Fillmore. In between all this great stuff, we’ll have our usual open stream. We’re free 24/7 and remain committed to music as opposed to profit.

We Celebrate The Fillmore Through The Weekend, Starting Today With Lucinda Williams and The Byrds, Thursday, July 1, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Today we begin a Fillmore celebration that runs through July 4. Bill Graham closed the Fillmore East on June 27, 1971 and The Fillmore West on July 4, 1971. It was a legendary venue for so many great bands that it cannot be ignored.

“I’d rather play a few nights at The Fillmore than one night in an arena.” We kick off this celebration with Lucinda Williams live at the Fillmore West.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Sister Kate by Kate Taylor

We take a short break in the Fillmore celebration to air our Album of The Week. We’re winding down on this selection, folks. Our final airing will be Saturday.

7:00 p.m. The Byrds Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, Recorded Live February 7-8, 1969 NEW!

The notorious Byrd brothers remain one of our Mermaid Lounge favorites, and we have a never-before-heard concert by The Byrds live at the Fillmore West today.

It’s a (Mostly) Open Stream Wednesday Except for Some “Live” Stones and Simon & Garfunkel In the Spotlight, June 30, 2021

Yes, it’s the final day of June as we continue to melt here in the northeast. Hopefully, the end of the month will bring an end to this misery. It’s a (mostly) open stream day as we prepare for some fun on Thursday and Friday. You’ll just have to tune in to find out what it is. We’re not tipping our hat.

12:00 p.m. The Rolling Stones Live at The Saitama Super Arena, Japan, April 2, 2006

Today we’ve got some live Stones for you. I’ve only seen them a couple of times in my lifetime, both times during the seventies. They were great on stage, and Mick Jagger did not disappoint. During her heyday, Linda Ronstadt proclaimed the Stones her favorite rock n’ roll band. That has a certain symmetry to it if you’ve heard her live performance of Tumblin’ Dice.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Simon & Garfunkel

We haven’t aired this one for a while, and these guys certainly are due some time in the spotlight. They made their debut back when they were sixteen years old, singing Hey Little Schoolgirl. That was back in the fifties. Since then, they’ve sold upwards of 105 million records.

All around this light programming, we have a (mostly) Open Stream Wednesday, circulating our 27,000-song standard rotation. Definitely a good day to find out what we’re all about. Best of all: We’re totally free 24/7, uninterrupted by advertisers or chatty DJ’s who don’t know when to shut the fuck up.

The second airing of Sister Kate is upon us. We understand if you lost sight of Kate Taylor in the early 70s, with both James and Livingston making records. But Sister Kate is a fine album, and Kate Taylor is a great talent in her own right.

7:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at A & R Studios, New York, August 26, 1971

No matter what anyone tells you, The Allman Brothers Band are the granddaddys of Southern rock, and certainly the finest purveyors of blues-rock on the planet. Today we have them live at A & R Studios.

I don’t know what the weather is where you are, but outside The Mermaid Lounge it’s far too hot to venture out. Some of us have no choice, but if you do, then this is the place to be. Tune us in.

We not only play our favorites, but those who were rock n’ roll pioneers…those who inspired and delighted our favorites. Little Richard was a force, and he certainly is one of those early pioneers.
