11:00 a.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of The Hollies   NEW!

The Hollies were originally formed in 1962 in Manchester, England, by childhood friends Allan Clarke (lead vocals, harmonica) and Graham Nash (rhythm guitar and vocals). They have been through many personnel changes over the years. Graham Nash left the band in 1968 and relocated to Los Angeles where he formed Crosby, Stills, and Nash with David Crosby (formerly of The Byrds) and Stephen Stills (formerly of Buffalo Springfield). The Hollies, however remained an influential pop/rock band througout the sixties and into the seventies, making some excellent music.

7:00 p.m.     The Best of The Summer of Love! Deliver by The Mamas & The Papas  NEW!

Released in February of 1967 the title, Deliver, was an inside joke among the group since recording began soon after Cass Elliott told them that she was pregnant with her first child, Owen. There was still a stigma associated with unwed mothers at the time, so the band kept it secret. The album charted at No. 2 on Billboard and resulted in three singles, Look Through My Window, Creeque Alley, and Dedicated To The One I Love.

Interestingly enough, Creeque Alley, is kind of an autobiographical history of the band which talks about other members of the folk community at the time, such as John Sebastian of The Lovin’ Spoonful, Roger McGuinn of The Byrds, and Barry McGuire of The New Christy Minstrels (and who later released the sixties anthem, Eve of Destruction. as a solo act).

The Summer of Love Rages On: Dusty’s Lost British Recordings, The Lost Cream Tapes, and John Wesley Harding Pays A Visit, Monday, August 24, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’re in our final week of The Summer of Love and we’re rolling along nicely on a Monday morning, as you will see.

11:00 a.m.   The Best of The Summer of Love! John Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan  NEW!

Dylan’s eighth studio album, released on December 27, 1967, marked a return to his folk roots after a few blues-influenced rock albums. It was very well received, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard charts and No. 1 in the UK. It was recorded around the same time as the home recordings made with The Band, which were eventually released as The Basement Tapes.

2:00 p.m.    Dusty in London: The Lost British Recordings

There are fucking days when I cannot believe that people do not have a grasp on what Dusty Springfield has meant to music in general, let alone as a woman pioneer in this hell-bent male profession. But we here in The Mermaid Lounge “get it” for sure.

7:00 p.m.     Acid: The Lost Cream Tapes (1967-1968)

This bootleg was actually released in 2005 and are alternate recordings of several songs as well as some jamming. Very cool. And really good quality, so enjoy. By the way, there are a couple of Falstaff Beer Commercial recordings tossed in, proving once again that advertising has been king for a long time.

This is always my favorite Sunday of the month. The only question ever is do I choose Volume 1 or Volume 2. Today, the decision was easy because it’s everything the latter part of the sixties were about musically. Before Woodstock in 1969, there was the Monterey International Pop Festival held at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in California from June 16-18, 1967. The Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who, Johnny Rivers, Simon & Garfunkel, The Grateful Dead, The Mamas & The Papas and many others all graced the stage. It also marked the introduction of Otis Redding to the world.

The Doors influenced  music in immense ways in a very short period of time. Who knows what could have come our way down the road. Morrison was, without a doubt, a poet. And the band was really good. The whole package, gone before we knew it. The Doors actually had two album releases in 1967, their debut album (The Doors) and Strange Days (featured yesterday).

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Are You Experienced? by The Jimi Hendrix Experience

With one album, Hendrix went from struggle to stardom. This album is heralded as one of the most amazing debuts in rock history.

7:00 p.m.     The Best of The Summer of Love! Their Satanic Majesties Request by The Rolling Stones  NEW!

The Stones’ only foray into psychedelic music before returning to their roots was not one of my favorite efforts. However, it was the natural progression at the time, and to leave the album out would be egregious. (And any album that has She’s A Rainbow on it can’t be all bad.) I just thought the Stones felt uncomfortable with the genre more than anything. Contributing to this was the fact that the entire recording process was a literal shitshow. The link provides the details.

This would be an excellent day to tune in, turn on and drop out. Spend the day here in The Mermaid Lounge. You deserve a break from all this bullshit.

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Here we are back from Limbo! Therefore, it is only fitting that we celebrate the occasion (which we hope to never have happen again) with our two house bands!

12:00 p.m.   Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at the Fillmore 1999

Back in ’99, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers performed at The Fillmore in San Francisco for seven consecutive sold-out nights on The High Grass Dogs Tour. By then, the band was already enmeshed in a full-on love affair with fans, and this continued to grow over the coming decades. We love Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers here in The Mermaid Lounge.

4:00 p.m.     The Inner Sanctum: The Tell-Tale Heart    FINAL AIRING!

We not only say goodbye today to The Tell-Tale Heart but to the Inner Sanctum. We’ll take a very short break in the spooky proceedings, but will be back with another featured series soon.

It’s not a new album, but July 20 was the 55th anniversary of the film’s official release in the UK. It was released in August of 1965 in the U.S. Today, we celebrate the release of Help! by featuring the soundtrack album. The song in the scene above (photo) is Ticket To Ride, which John Lennon called the first psychedelic song ever made. Enjoy!

Here we are again celebrating the band that birthed Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. I say birthed rather than morphed into because Mudcrutch is a badass band all on its own. Petty brought them back into the light in 2008, and the rest is musical history, including a brilliant tour in 2016 where the definitive version of Hungry No More was recorded live at The House of Blues in Boston. We love Mr. Petty here. 

Mudcrutch is Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench (all from the Heartbreakers), along with Randall Marsh and Tom Leadon.
