Here we are with one of the more underrated bands of the sixties. I think The Association is one of the most intriguing bands of sixties, hard to pin down, and with a really nice sound. I wasn’t intending on a Haiku. Sorry.

3:00 p.m. The Shadow: 06 House of Horror NEW!

Okay, here’s the deal: A mad scientist steals a gorilla from the zoo. (How is that possible?) There’s also a brain transplant involved, but I’m not giving you the details. By now, you are so on the edge of your seat that you just have to tune this one in. While I won’t reveal the details, I will say that I think The Three Stooges also did this episode.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Lovin’ Spoonful

“In a coffee house Sebastian sat, and after every number they’d pass the hat…” Those are the lyrics from The Mamas & The Papas song, Creeque Alley, the story of the Laurel Canyon days. They also talk about McGuinn (The Byrds) and McGuire (Eve of Destruction), but Sebastian is John of The Lovin’ Spoonful, a great little sixties jug band. Those were the days.

Led Zeppelin IV was released by Atlantic Records on November 8, 1971, and was a massive critical and commercial success, shipping 37 million copies worldwide. All of the songs were written by the band, with the exception of the Memphis Minnie blues song, When The Levee Breaks.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume 1: Various Artists UPDATED!

Bonnie Raitt live in-studio in August of 1977, one month after the release of her Sweet Forgiveness album — her sixth album and the one that put her on the map (although, it should have happened much earlier). It also provided her first commercial hit, Runaway, the excellent bluesy remake of Del Shannon’s classic.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Onondega County War Memorial, New York, September 28, 1976 (aka, Dick’s Picks, Vol. 20) NEW!

Yet another live classic from the world’s preeminent jam band. Even if we repeated a concert or a hundred, you’d never know. They never sound the same and you always hear something new. (BTW, there is no Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia.)

Good morning, music lovers everywhere! We have listeners all over Europe and Asia, and we’re adding new locations every week. Where the hell are all you U.S. listeners? Still paying for you music to avoid advertising?

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Lost Tapes of Valerie Carter NEW!

Known primarily as a “session singer” and background vocalist to most (not all), Valerie Carter was so much more than that. Her debut album, Just a Stone’s Throw, was produced by Little Feat’s Lowell George in 1977. She went on to release several more widely acclaimed albums. She was not only a singer, but a songwriter. She wrote Cook With Honey, which was a hit for someone named Judy Collins.

Back in 1995, I saw Linda Ronstadt in concert at Boston’s Orpheum Theater. Valerie Carter was the opening act, and she was a perfect fit. Ronstadt was dead on that night as well. But the best part of the night was when they were on the stage together.

A recent discovery of recordings that were never released has been transformed into this week’s Album of The Week, The Lost Tapes. Musicians and vocalists like Lowell George, Fred Tackett, Bill Payne, Linda Ronstadt, Nicolette Larson appear in testament to her immense talent. Valerie Carter: The little girl with the big voice.

The playlist that began our monthly focus on The Sixties. We now have two such playlists and are working on a third. Starts at 3:00 p.m. today and runs for a little over five hours. No advertising. No interruptions except for a couple of station I.D.s. No shit.

Get it together, people. You can either settle for “free” radio which is nothing more than an advertising venue and a lot of boring DJ chatter, pay for access to keep these slugs off. Or get it all for free like it used to be. Your choice.

The Beatles Own the New Album of The Week, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live in Chicago, and The Psychedelic Express Passes Through, Sunday, August 30, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We move out of the Summer of Love celebration, but it never really goes away because it’s the very DNA for this station.

We’re putting a caption here because you probably won’t recognize these guys. But The Electric Prunes made one of the greatest psychedelic songs of the sixties. You’ll have to tune in tonight to find out what it is.

11:00 a.m.   Album of The Week: Revolver by The Beatles   NEW!

Revolver was the seventh studio album by The Beatles, the greatest band in rock n’ roll history. It resulted in the double A-side single of Eleanor Rigby and Yellow Submarine. It was also the Beatles’ last recording project before their retirement as a touring band. This album was amazing on so many levels, and it signaled a metamorphosis in the Beatles’ music going forward. Many articles have been written about the album, all worth reading. In short, it is considered one of the most influential releases in modern music history because of the vast range of musical styles covered and the technology employed. The songwriting also took a leap forward. Although much is made of Harrison’s later contributions to The Beatles’ repertoire, Taxman was actually George Harrison’s breakthrough song.

So, today, we cover something we did not get to over the past two weeks or so. It’s a doozie, as my mother would say. The Electric Prunes, Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Doors, The Jefferson Airplane, The Beatles and many more!

Tune in. Turn on. Drop out. That sounds pretty good to me on a lazy, sunny Sunday. We’re free. We’re totally outside the system. And we’re commercial- and talking head-free.

The Doors had two releases in 1967. This was their debut album, recorded in 1966 and released in January of 1967. It is considered a seminal event in the development of psychedelic and acid rock. An amazing album.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Younger Than Yesterday by The Byrds  FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of this week’s Album of the Week. Tomorrow, there’ll be a new one in its place!

7:00 p.m.     Linda Ronstadt Live at The Capitol Theater, Passaic, New Jersey, December 6, 1975

Heart Like a Wheel was released in 1974, and Prisoner in Disguise in 1975. It was lift-off time on the launch pad of Linda Ronstadt’s career.

10:00 p.m.   Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Matrix Club, San Francisco, December 4, 1966   NEW!

Tonight we take it back to 1966 and the infamous Matrix Club on Fillmore Street, San Francisco, a key location to what is called ‘the San Francisco sound.’ Enjoy.

We’re Easing Our Way Into Fall With The Hollies in The Spotlight, and Winding Down The Summer of Love with The Mamas & The Papas, Friday, August 28, 2020

Here’s your programming for Friday!

11:00 a.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of The Hollies   NEW!

The Hollies were originally formed in 1962 in Manchester, England, by childhood friends Allan Clarke (lead vocals, harmonica) and Graham Nash (rhythm guitar and vocals). They have been through many personnel changes over the years. Graham Nash left the band in 1968 and relocated to Los Angeles where he formed Crosby, Stills, and Nash with David Crosby (formerly of The Byrds) and Stephen Stills (formerly of Buffalo Springfield). The Hollies, however remained an influential pop/rock band througout the sixties and into the seventies, making some excellent music.

7:00 p.m.     The Best of The Summer of Love! Deliver by The Mamas & The Papas  NEW!

Released in February of 1967 the title, Deliver, was an inside joke among the group since recording began soon after Cass Elliott told them that she was pregnant with her first child, Owen. There was still a stigma associated with unwed mothers at the time, so the band kept it secret. The album charted at No. 2 on Billboard and resulted in three singles, Look Through My Window, Creeque Alley, and Dedicated To The One I Love.

Interestingly enough, Creeque Alley, is kind of an autobiographical history of the band which talks about other members of the folk community at the time, such as John Sebastian of The Lovin’ Spoonful, Roger McGuinn of The Byrds, and Barry McGuire of The New Christy Minstrels (and who later released the sixties anthem, Eve of Destruction. as a solo act).
