BU Radio Graphic 19-4-2019

Here’s the line-up:

10:00 a.m.    The Ungovernables Report: All News You Need to Know

Sarah Freels and Adam Rice give you the what-and-why for.

1:00 p.m.      Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Live at the Fillmore (1999)

The band’s High Grass Dogs Tour hits the Fillmore with some songs you don’t hear very often, like Country Farm, Free Girl Now, and Swingin’.

5:00 p.m.      In the Spotlight: The Music of Badfinger

Badfinger is the one bona-fide star band the Beatles managed to sign to Apple Records. They made some of the greatest rock n’roll on the planet. Enjoy this set.

7:30 p.m.      Abby Martin & Peter Joseph: Abolishing Capitalism

11:00 p.m.    Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Mojo

A trip through the bluesy Mojo album, the band’s 12th studio album, released June 15, 2010.

The Petty Party Continues and It’s Happy Birthday to Stevie Ray Vaughan!

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Thought we’d do something a bit different today, so we’re taking a close-up look at three Tom Petty albums, two with the Heartbreakers and one solo effort, Highway Companion, one of my all-time favorite Petty albums.

Blog photo 10-3

Here’s the line up:

10:00 a.m.   Stevie Ray Vaughan Live at Montreaux (1982 & 1985)

Today would have been SRV’s 65th birthday, born in the great year of 1954 (along with yours truly). This guy’s life was cut far too short. One of the greatest blues singers and guitarists ever.

1:00 p.m.     Tom Petty’s Highway Companion (released July 25, 2006)

Don’t bother to listen to the critics. All they ever wanted this guy to do is rock out. He’s a whole lot more than that. In fact, his bandmates never understood why he didn’t make an all-acoustic album. He apparently didn’t think he was a good enough guitar player to go there. (He may be no Mike Campbell, but he’s no slouch on that thing.) This is, in my humble opinion, one of the finest albums I’ve heard.

4:00 p.m.     Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ Hypnotic Eye (released July 29, 2014)

The Heartbreakers’ thirteenth and final studio album was one of the best ever. Up until this release, I truly believed that Damn The Torpedoes, would go down in history as the band’s crowning achievement. Not so. (We will get to DTT also.)

7:00 p.m.     Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers’ Mojo (released July 15, 2010)

The Heartbreakers’ twelfth album was recorded live in the studio with no overdubs, and was created as a blues album. If you are a music aficionado and care to explore, there’s a cool little story behind this one.

Two Years Ago Today We Lost Tom Petty, October 2, 2019

Tom Petty left this world two years ago today at the age of 66. For his fans, his friends, his bandmates, and his family it was all too soon. This month we celebrate all the great music he gave us, and remember how much he loved his fans.

Tom-Petty-Heartbreakers

11:00 a.m.   Abby Martin with Richard Wolff: Understanding Marxism and Socialism

2:00 p.m.     Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live: Pack Up the Plantation!

This was the Heartbreakers’ first official “live” album, released in November of 1985. It was primarily recorded at The Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles, but several tracks were recorded earlier.

5:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of The Shelters

Let’s not forget that Tom Petty was also a producer and mentor to a band called The Shelters. He produced their first album, and was at work on their second with them when he passed. It has since been released, and we have updated the playlist accordingly.

7:00 p.m.     Tom Petty’s Final Interview

This is a wide-ranging interview about the future. It’s clear that Tom Petty was intending to be around for a while yet.

11:00 a.m.   Tom Petty: Deep Cuts and B-Sides

Here’s a chance to dig deep into the Tom Petty library and pull out songs you probably do not hear much on your local station. Most bands would kill for The Hearbreakers B-sides.

3:00 p.m.     Across the Borderline: Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers

A musical chronicle of Bob Dylan’s 1986 tour with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers live from Sydney, Australia.

7:00 p.m.     Music From The Harder They Come

Join Jimmy Cliff, the Maytalls and others for music from the iconic movie.

If you’re on Facebook, please remember to join us tonight at 8:00 p.m. on the Become Ungovernable Watch Party page for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers “Live” From Fenway Park, Boston (2014)!

The Doors are Featured for the First Time on Monday, September 30, 2019

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We have The Doors featured for the first time ever today. We have also expanded our #BecomeUngovernable House Play List.

The Doors

10:00 a.m. #BecomeUngovernable House Play List (Updated and Expanded!)

A couple of hours worth of music that refuses to play in the system. Get on it.

3:00 p.m.   The Ungovernable Report

This is our third airing since Friday at a different time slot for maximum coverage.

4:00 p.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of The Doors

They made music together for just four years, but their impact on rock music cannot be denied. Jim Morrison was rock’s original bad boy.

We’re back to open streaming after The Doors as the station will be taken off line early Monday evening in preparation for Tom Petty month.

Linda Ronstadt & Friends in the Programming for Sunday, September 29, 2019

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Here is your scheduled programming for Sunday, September 29!

Bob Dylan and George Harrison

10:00 a.m.    The Ungovernables Report

Get all the news from Sarah Freels and Adam Rice

1:00 p.m.      Linda Ronstadt & Friends

We dug deep for this one. Expanding on Ronstadt’s Duets release of a few years ago, we dug back through her catalogue and found a treasure trove of duets for your auditory pleasure.

5:00 p.m.      Bob Dylan & George Harrison Almost Went to See Elvis

This is one of those urban legends promoted by Dylan himself, who tells the story that he and George Harrison were supposed to have a recording session with The King. Rumor had it that Elvis didn’t show up. Dylan said that was not true. It was he and Harrison who didn’t show up. Either way, the result is this great bootleg session between the two friends.

9:00 p.m.      In the Spotlight: Van “The Man” Morrison

A great play list from one of the best singer-songwriters on the damned planet.

We Intend to Pay Respect to the Women Pioneers of Rock

I’ve been wanting to write more on this blog, but simply haven’t had the time. However, as we begin to roll out the station ever-so-slowly, I’ve decided to make that time.

Music, specifically rock n’roll, has been a big part of my life ever since I can remember. I remember listening to Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry when I was very young because my oldest sister listened to them. My middle sister was listening to some of the same, but was more into Lesley Gore and the Shirelles. Of course, my mother and father were listening to things like Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. To this day, I like them all, and you will eventually be able to hear them all on #BecomeUngovernable Radio. However, the Beatles actually landed in America on the day I turned ten, and they changed my musical perspective forever. I got my own musical identity that day. However, before I wax poetic any further, let me get back to the subject at hand.

linda-bonnie--735x413

Fresh off seeing the new Linda Ronstadt documentary, The Sound of My Voice, my grasp of just how little attention is paid to the women who blazed a trail in rock music has been galvanized. (By the way, if you haven’t seen this documentary yet, you absolutely must. It puts into perspective just how important she was. The link in this paragraph above is the official trailer.)

I listen to music constantly, mostly now when I stream #BecomeUngovernable Radio music because it is, essentially, a reflection of my musical tastes. I’m not going to lie about that. What I notice when I am not on my own radio station, but listening to the commercial stations, is that the only two females classic rock stations play are Joan Jett and (less frequently) Blondie (Debbie Harry). You’d think they were the only female singers on the planet. If you’re lucky, they’ll toss in a couple of Pat Benatar songs during the week. Not even SiriusXM offers up a woman’s station in the myriad of specialty stations they offer. It’s a male-dominated world even today.

Linda ronstadt billboard

I saw Linda Ronstadt 39 times in my lifetime, even flying out to LA for this Christmas Eve concert.

One has to wonder what women have to do to achieve the level of respect men in the industry have. Linda Ronstadt is the only female in rock history to have five consecutive platinum albums — all of them multi-platinum, by the way. Her popularity in the seventies equaled that of Mick Jagger, all while blazing a trail for others like Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, and Maria Muldaur. Ronstadt was a road warrior, selling out giant concert venues night after night throughout the entire decade. Decidedly disliking the large concert venue, she also played the Universal Ampitheater, a more intimate setting. To satisfy demand there, she played 20 consecutive nights on one tour. She has won 10 Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, two Academy of Country Music awards, an Emmy Award, and an ALMA Award.

And Ronstadt isn’t the only female singer afforded this insult. We at #BecomeUngovernable Radio would like to change that paradigm.

We’re Back! Programming for Saturday, September 28, 2019

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We are back with a bit of a new format, starting with lighter programming and more music on the weekends. We start out today with one new and one updated playlist.

5:00 p.m.    In the Spotlight: The Music of The Shelters (Updated)

When we put together this play list originally (a few months ago), the Shelters were riding the success of their first album under the guidance and production of Tom Petty. Since then, their second album has been released and we have updated the play list to reflect that.
