We close with an iconic country band that has graced the music scene for more than half a century.

We’re on the way to the weekend and music can make the journey so much more pleasant. We’re free. We’re on 24/7 without commercial interruption. And the button is below.

Today It’s an Al Green ‘Spotlight’, Live Rolling Stones and Our ‘A Little Bit O’ Soul’ EP on Saturday, December 28, 2024

Good morning, soulful revelers! We’ve got a great lineup today that includes our ‘A Little Bit O’ Soul’ EP that combines the best of Motown, Stax, Atlantic and others to deliver the best of soul and R & B during the sixties and seventies.

Here’s your Saturday musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Al Green

One of the absolute best here, the Reverend Al. Here’s a little treat to whet your whistle, as they say. Al Green joins with Chicago on a TV special from back in 1978 for Tired of Being Alone. A gem.

This performance is new to our station. We’ve never aired it before. I saw the Stones live in Boston around this time back in the day. One of the best I’ve seen.

4:00 p.m. A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists

We’ve got our big, bad soul and R & B EP to take us into the evening tonight with Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Jackson Five, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas, Sam & Dave, The Four Tops. The Ronettes, The Temptations, Carla Thomas, James Brown, The Shirelles, Etta James, Curtis Mayfield, Sam Cooke, Edwin Starr, Fontella Bass, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Ray Charles, Irma Thomas, The Box Tops, Ann Peebles, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Otis Redding, The Drifters and more!

10:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Patty Griffin

I’ve been on the planet a long time. I’ve not heard Patty Griffin on the radio anywhere, but you’ll hear her here. Who is she? She’s a (primarily) folk singer, songwriter, guitar and piano player who is known for her stripped-down songwriting style. Her songs have been covered by many singers, including Emmylou Harris, Rory Block and Bette Midler. She has won numerous Grammy awards, but women still do not get representative play time on the airwaves. Unless, of course, you listen to us! You can learn more about Patty here.

1:00 p.m. A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists

We’ve got our big soul and R & B playlist today with Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Ronettes, Marvin Gaye. We’ve got some vintage J. J. Cale on a 1994 tour from Hammersmith Apollo in London coming up this afternoon.

8:00 p.m. Stephen Stills in Session at A & R Studios, New York, NY, April 26, 1968

Legend has it that Stills was accompanying Judy Collins to her recording session at A & R, but she finished with time left on the clock. Stephen Stills is rumored to have paid the engineer privately to help him cut this album full of demos, later called Just Roll Tape.

Songs About Water, A Zombies Spotlight Feature and Dylan & Cash ‘in Session’ Dominate Sunday, September 15, 2024

Good morning, musicologists, and welcome to Sunday in The Lounge. Today we’ve got songs about water, a new Spotlight featuring The Zombies and Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash ‘in session’ in Nashville, vintage 1969.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

And it is everywhere, comprising 71% of the elements on earth. You’ll hear from Paul McCartney, Deep Purple, Joe Cocker, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Otis Redding, The Doobie Brothers, Valerie Carter, Bob Dylan, Al Green, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Loggins & Messina, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Linda Ronstadt, Spirit, The Grass Roots, The Beach Boys, Lindisfarne, Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Tom Rush, Donovan, America, Johnny Rivers and more!

The Zombies are certainly one of the best of the British Invasion bands, and this Spotlight feature is long overdue. We’ve also got some live shows coming up in the future.

8:00 p.m. Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash “In Session” at Columbia Studios, Nashville, TN, February 17 & 18, 1969

This is a great ‘in session’ performance by two masters during the recording of Dylan’s Nashville Skyline album, one of my personal Dylan favorites. Although The Girl From The North Country was the only cut to make the album, it was a great collaboration.

Yeah, it’s Sunday Funday and we’ve got our usual great daily lineup sprinkled among all the big, wide Open Stream we offer every single day. And best of all, we’re free of charge and totally free of commercial interruption.
