Good Morning, Music Lovers! Simplicity is the word of the day today. Lots of Open Stream, but…some really great programming to carry you through your afteroon.

Hell, it’s only the greatest supergroup on the planet: (R-L) George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Bob Dylan.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: The Traveling Wilburys, Volume One NEW!

There are supergroups, then there are SUPERGROUPS. This one is in the latter category. Every poll I’ve seen taken in every music magazine and on every music website puts The Traveling Wilburys at the top of the supergroup heap, and we here in The Mermaid Lounge wholeheartedly agree. It started with George Harrison needing to record a “B side” for a release. The rest is history. You can read about it here.

3:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-to-Z: Various Artists

Folk music is an amazing genre. I remember when folk music purists were upset the day Bob Dylan picked up an electric guitar. Dylan changed the face of folk and made it much more accessible to many people who may have ignored it. You’ll hear Bob Dylan in this EP. You’ll also hear Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, The Beatles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Stone Poneys (featuring Linda Ronstadt), Bruce Springsteen, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, John Prine, Tom Rush, The Wallflowers, John Prine, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Jesse Winchester, Odetta, Peter, Paul & Mary, and many more!

Here we have some of the music that inspired us to start this station back in 2017. It features The Beatles, Barry McGuire, The Chambers Brothers, Arlo Guthrie, Edwin Starr, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, The Who, Ten Years After, and many more!

In between all of this, we’ve got wide Open Stream delivered by The Music Mermaid. We’re uninterrupted by commercials, don’t employ mouthy DJ’s, and we’re totally free. What more could you ask for?

Taj Mahal, who was born Henry St. Clair Fredericks in Harlem, New York, is an American blues musician and multi-instrumentalist, who plays guitar, piano, banjo, harmonica, and many other instruments. He is an innovator who refuses to be “defined” by any one form and often incorporates elements of world music into his works. You get to hear him here today from The Mermaid Lounge.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Willy & The Poor Boys by Creedence Clearwater Revival

We are winding down on this week’s album selection. Our last airing will be on Saturday, so this might be a good day to tune this one in! On Sunday, when you roll out of bed, there’ll be a new selection.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Damn The Torpedoes by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers NEW!

We chose Hypnotic Eye as our first Heartbreakers’ album to be the Album of the Week back a couple of years ago. However, Damn The Torpedoes is second to none. There is no question that this put the band on the map, and there is absolutely no question that this album is an absolute classic in popular music. It kicked off a long and wonderfully amazing 40-year run from one of our house bands (The Beatles being the other).

We are back with another of our long-players today, an uninterrupted homage to our folk music roots with Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Woody Guthrie, Peter, Paul & Mary, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, John Prine, Tom Rush, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, John Hartford, Eric Andersen, Cat Stevens, Harry Chapin, Linda Ronstadt, The Carter Family and many, many more.

Springsteen dropped the “Seeger” from the sessions band for this album performance; something we think is a shame. Ultimately this is Springsteens ‘take’ on Pete Seeger;s music, recorded November 17-19, 2006 in Dublin, Ireland.

Good Morning, Music Lovers, and Happy Thanksgiving from your friends in The Mermaid Lounge! We have our Thanksgiving tradition coming up at 10:00 a.m., so be watching for the back story to Alice’s Restaurant in this blog entry.

Here’s today’s entry from the College:

November 26, 1955: Bill Haley’s Rock Around The Clock reaches #1 in the UK, and is considered to be the first rock n’ roll song to accomplish that feat.

November 26, 1962: The Beatles record their second single, Please Please Me, in 18 takes at London’s EMI Studios. They also record the B-side, Ask Me Why.

November 26, 1964: The Zombies record Tell Her No.

November 26, 1965: After having Thanksgiving dinner in a church in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, a young Arlo Guthrie and a friend returned to clean up. When they can’t find an open dump, the two dump their trash down a hill. They are arrested, fined $25 each, and are forced to clean up the trash again. When they return to the church, Arlo writes the Alice’s Restaurant Massacree, in which he embellishes some of the events. Nevertheless, it is a moment in musical history that we musicologists will not forget.

November 26, 1966: You Keep Me Hangin’ On by the Supremes took over the #1 slot on the R & B charts.

Also on November 26 of 1966, I’m Losing You by The Temptations enters the R & B charts and will become the band’s fourth straight #1 hit.

November 26, 1967: The promo clip of The Beatles’ Hello Goodbye was aired on The Ed Sullivan Show.

November 26, 1969: John Lennon works on a Beatles song for the final time when he mixes You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) at Abbey Road Studios. It is the B-side of their Let It Be single.

Also on November 26, 1969, The Band receives a Gold Record for their second album, The Band, one of the greatest albums ever recorded from one of the greatest bands on the planet.

November 26, 1977: Linda Ronstadt becomes one of only a handful of singers who manages to have two singles in the Top Ten simultaneously with Blue Bayou and It’s So Easy.

Also on this day in 1977, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors album held the #1 slot for a then-record 29 weeks.

November 26, 2010: Willie Nelson was arrested for possession of six ounces of weed found on his tour bus travelling from LA to Texas. The prosecutor recommended no jail time because of the small amount, and instead suggested a $100 fine and that Willie sing Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain for the court.

Born On This Day

November 26, 1944: Alan Henderson, bassist with the Northern Irish band, Them, was born in Belfast. For those who do not know the band, Them had the 1965 UK hits Baby, Please Don’t Go and Here Comes The Night with Van Morrison on lead vocals.

November 26, 1945: Another bassist, John McVie, with Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, is born in London.

Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant” Becomes a Tradition Here on Thanksgiving Day 2019

Alice’s Restaurant. It’s legendary. It’s a song (also known as The Alice’s Resaurant Masacree). It’s a movie. It’s an album. Arlo Guthrie has a friend named Alice Brock, but there’s no real Alice’s Restaurant. Furthermore, the true story that inspired the song had nothing to do with a restaurant at all.

50th Anniversary Arlo

The real story is that on Thanksgiving 1965, Guthrie (and a friend) visited his friend Alice Brock and her husband in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. They lived in an old deconsecrated church. On his way out, they thought they’d do them a favor by taking their trash to the dump. Unfortunately, the dump was closed that day, so Guthrie and a friend dumped the trash over a cliff where others had dumped their trash.

Guthrie was arrested, and the black mark on his record is what kept him out of Viet Nam by making him ineligible for the draft. Although the actual event happened in 1965, Guthrie’s debut album, Alice’s Restaurant, including the 18-minute anti-war anthem, was released in 1969.

Alice’s Restaurant is 50 years old this year, celebrating the same anniversary with Wodstock. Arlo Guthrie has been on the road with it, playing a sold-out performance in the Berkshires on November 23. Somehow it’s fitting that it become a tradition here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio this year.
