We’ve Got a Great Sunday On Tap With Queen, Our House EP and Birthday Boy George Harrison, February 25, 2024

It’s another Sunday here in The Mermaid Lounge and it’s also George Harrison’s birthday. We will celebrate that with our closing program. Before that it’s Queen’s new AOW and our multi-artist House EP.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

The band’s third studio album was released in November 1974, and was a departure from the progressive sound of their first two album. It focused instead on more pop-centric songs and traditional rock, eventually leading to the Queen ‘sound.’ The album propelled the band to mainstream popularity in the UK and the rest of the world. Happy 50th!

1:00 p.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House EP: Various Artists

Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, The Plastic Ono Band, Paul McCartney & Wings, Joni Mitchell, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Marvin Gaye, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, The Band, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt and more!

Today we celebrate what would be George Harrison’s 81st birthday by putting him In the Spotlight featuring his muisc with The Beatles, The Traveling Wilbury’s and as a solo artist.

Welcome Weekenders! We’ve Got Jackson Browne, Our House EP and ‘Live’ Dan Fogelberg, Saturday, January 27, 2024

Good morning and welcome to the weekend here! Today we say farewell to our Album of The Week, hear the music that inspired the station and ‘live’ Dan Fogelberg later.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m.  Album of The Week: Late For The Sky by Jackson Browne FINAL AIRING!

Today we say farewell to the first album in our ’50th Birthday’ series. Tomorrow we will celebrate another album’s 50th!

11:30 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House EP: Various Artists

The music that has long been emblazoned in my psyche and was the impetus to start this whole thing. You’ll hear Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, T. Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, The Plastic Ono Band, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, The Band, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin and more!

8:00 p.m.  Dan Fogelberg Live at The Universal Amphitheater, Los Angeles, CA, August 15, 1985

The very first Spotlight list we built was for this guy, a most underappreciated singer-songwriter; one of the best of his generation. He belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but that honor seems to have eluded him, in spite of the fact that they’ve managed to induct The BeeGees, Funkadelic, AC/DC, The Clash, Aerosmith, Tupac, Jay-Z and the other “stars” of music. Fogelberg has been ‘eligible’ since 1998; it’s 2024, folks. Figure it the fuck out.

Sorry. Had to get that out. It pissed me off how long it took for them to induct Linda Ronstadt. They waited until she lost her magnificent voice. Give me a break. Anyway, I digress. We are here. It’s our third day of rain. Gloomy. But not here in The Lounge where The Music Mermaid resides. She’ll be in charge today as I work my last shift of the week.

It’s Simply Sunday With Emmylou Harris’ “Evangeline” as the New AOW and the #BU House EP, December 24, 2023

Good morning, musicologists. It’s officially Christmas eve day and we are laying back here in The Mermaid Lounge as we always do on Sundays. We’ve got a great AOW to kick off the day’s programming.

Here’s today’s musical menagerie:

Released in January of 1981, this was Emmylou’s eighth studio album and was created from previously-recorded songs not used on her earlier albums. Most notable was a remake of Mr. Sandman with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt, originally recorded during the Trio sessions. The two are also featured on the title song. All-in-all, it’s an album of great tunes by one of the greatest country artists of her generation.

3:00 p.m.  The #BecomeUngovernable House EP: Various Artists

It’s wide Open Stream before and after this great extended playlist featuring Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, Genesis, T-Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, The Plastic Ono Band, George Harrison, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, The Band, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin and more!

It’s Simply Sunday With Sam Cooke’s AOW and the ‘#BecomeUngovernable House Music’ EP, November 26, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! We are on another simple Sunday rotation today with plenty of Open Stream and minimal, but excellent, programming.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

This was Sam Cooke’s eleventh and final studio album, released in 1964. It contained his final hit, A Change Is Gonna’ Come, which became an anthem for the civil rights movement of the sixties. The song has increased in popularity over the decades since its release and, although a modest hit compared to his earlier songs, has become one of his best-known songs. Sam Cooke was a musical genius, and his considerable influence on the development of the soul and R&B genre cannot be denied.

3:00 p.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House EP: Various Artists

Primarily songs from the sixties and seventies, this is essentially the music that inspired the radio station. You’ll hear Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, Genesis, T-Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, The Plastic Ono Band, Billy Joel, George Harrison, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seger, The Band, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin and more!

Our #BecomeUngovernable House EP, Steve Winwood’s AOW and Roy Orbison is Our New Singer-Songwriter, Saturday, October 28, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! Here I am writing to you from my favorite spot on the planet, Provincetown, Massachusetts. And the show goes on with a great musical lineup!

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

The music that started this whole idea of mine with Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, Genesis, T-Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, The Plastic Ono Band, Billy Joel, George Harrison, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, The Band and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Roll With It by Steve Winwood FINAL AIRING!

Steve Winwood’s great AOW is in its final airing phase today. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new selection here.

A lot of people younger than me remember Roy Orbison as a Wilbury. But before he was a Wilbury (no small feat, I might add), he had a brilliant solo career. Known as ‘The Caruso of Rock,’ Roy Orbison’s voice is so distinctive you’d never mistake him for anyone else. A key influencer for generations of musicians who followed, including Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and Jeff Lynne, his Wilbury bandmates.

I’m on vacation, so I’m not waxing poetic this morning about why you should make us part of your daily routine. You’ll figure it out eventually.

Here’s today’s weekenders’ lineup:

You’ll hear Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, Genesis, T-Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, Plastic Ono Band, George Harrison, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, The Band and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: North South by Paul Butterfield Blues Band FINAL AIRING!

This is the farewell airing for this album. Tomorrow when you roll yourselves out of bed, we’ll have a brand new album for you.

Brian Wilson is considered a genius in songwriting circles for many reasons, one of which is his novel approaches to pop music composition. There is absolutely no doubt that he is one of the most innovative and influential songwriters of his generation. He also happens to be the co-founder of The Beach Boys, and that is certainly what he is best known for. Today we pay him respects as both because you wouldn’t have one without the other.

8:00 p.m. The Band Live at Kosei Nenkin Hall, Tokyo, Japan, September 2, 1983

8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Townes Van Zandt NEW!

Although not a commercial success like Dylan, Townes Van Zandt is often put on the same pedestal. He was a prolific songwriter whose compositions are considered masterpieces of American songwriting, such as Pancho & Lefty, For The Sake of The Song, Tecumseh Valley and If I Needed You. His songs have been recorded by hundreds of artists, including Emmylou Harris (the absolute best version of Pancho & Lefty ever, IMO), Norah Jones, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan himself.

You’ve made it to the weekend, so why not celebrate with the little radio station that could. We’re not in it for the money. We’re in it for the music. I’m sharing my own personal juke box with the world. And best of all, we’re on 24/7 with no commercial advertising! Try us.
