Stevie Ray Vaughan, with and without Double Trouble, is in our Spotlight to close out the Tuesday Bluesday programming.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Elvis Presley by Elvis Presley

Elvis is back with his debut album. (By the way, we did give you the expanded edition of this album.) This is undoubtedly our favorite time for Elvis music, when he was immersed in the Nashville and Sun sessions.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Jimmy Reed

This is a full Chicago blues day, as the great Mr. Reed was also in our Chicago blues EP today. Jimmy Reed was born in Mississippi in 1925 to a sharecropper family. He was a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who was active from the 1940’s up until 1976, when he passed at the age of 50. His guitar style attraced both blues audiences and non-blues audiences.

The historic Maxwell Street Market was the birthplace of an electrified, industrialized blues that they called The Chicago Blues, helped along by Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Bo Diddley who frequented the area. 4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Duets by Emmylou Harris

We switch to country for this great compilation album, the only non-blues programming for the day. But there’s a synergy here because the blues and country were parents to the child they named rock n’ roll.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing The Blues

Dr. Tom Petty had a vision for the band’s future that had them sitting around in chairs playing the blues in the elder years, just like the photo on this blog. Unfortunately for us all, Tom never got there, but The Heartbreakers had a great appreciation for the blues and its musicians and they played plenty of blues while he was on the planet. We’ve got it for you tonight as we continue to celebrate Tom Petty Month.

The critics didn’t like it much, but the fans put it at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart and My Love at number one on the Hot 100. This only bolsters my belief that music critics are an acquired taste.

I’ve seen James Cotton a couple of times, once here in Boston and once on a business trip to Chicago, but there is surprisingly few ‘live’ James Cotton performances captured on tape. We do have this one, however, recorded at the famous Antoine’s in New Orleans sometime in July of 1987.

Buddy Guy’s career started back in 1953. Since then, this great blues guitarist and singer has infuenced several generations of blues players. At 86, Guy is still performing live and is in the midst of his 2023 tour. Tonight he’s In the Spotlight.
