The Week’s End Brings the ‘Down In New Orleans’ EP and a New Eagles Spotlight Feature, June 9, 2023

Good morning, lovers of New Orleans music. It’s certainly one of the most eclectic musical areas of the nation and today we celebrate it with our ‘Down in New Orleans’ EP!

Here’s your end-of-the-week musical lineup:

11:00 a.m. Down in New Orleans: Various Artists

Today we celebrate the music of New Orleans and we give you authentic Cajun/Zydeco sounds as well as some mainstream musicians who were born and raised there. You’ll hear Allen Toussaint, BeauSoleil, Clifton Chenier, Dr. John, Buckwheat Zydeco, Irma Thomas, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Allen Fontenot, Aaron Neville, Lucinda Williams, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Kermit Ruffins, Louis Armstrong, The Daywalkers, The Neville Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chance Bushman, The Boogaloo Swamis, Queen Ida & The Bontemps Zydeco Band, Marcia Ball, The Magnolia Sisters and more!

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Eagles NEW!

This one has been a long time coming, but it’s finally here. There’s no question that I’m a bigger fan of their early stuff (pre-Joe Walsh), but I’m also a fan of their later stuff as they shifted from country-rock to a more mainstream rock sound.

Before, in between and after our programming you are treated to our big, wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid. We’re on 24/7 at no charge to the listening public. And there’s no commercial advertising ever. What’s not to love here?

Tomorrow is Officially Fat Tuesday and The Grand Finale of Mardi Gras Season, So The Mermaid Lounge Celebrates With Our ‘Down in New Orleans’ EP and The Neville Brothers In The Spotlight Later, Monday, February 20, 2023

Yes, folks, we’ve been in the midst of Mardi Gras and that is party time in party town! Since tomorrow is Tuesday Bluesday, we are celebrating today. Some of the greatest music on the planet comes from New Orleans and we’re giving it to you today!

Here’s your Mardi Gras lineup:

10:00 a.m. Down in New Orleans: Various Artists

We start off the day with just over four hours of great music from New Orleans. We feature original cajun/zydeco bands as well as artists who were born in New Orleans. Some of the band in this EP were ‘locals’ I discovered on a 2014 trip to The Big Easy. You’ll hear Fats Domino, Lucinda Williams, Professor Longhair, Boozoo Chavis, Tony Joe White, Kermit Ruffins, Louis Armstrong, The Daywalkers, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Neville Brothers, Chance Bushman, The Boogaloo Swamis, La Touche, Irma Thomas (the Soul Queen of New Orleans), Kermit Venable, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Allen Fontenot and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Neville Brothers

The Neville Brothers are an R & B, soul and funk band formed in New Orleans in 1976. The members consisted of brothers Aaron, Art, Cyril and Charles, and have also intermittently included Aaron’s son, Ivan (keyboards) and Art’s son, Ian (electric guitar). They have officially disbanded, but they have left behind a legacy of great music.

Before, in between, and after we have our wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid. We are on 24/7 uninterrupted by commercial advertising and overly-talkative DJ’s. Tune us in, folks. Join your friends from around the world.

We Start Off a New Week With Our New Sixties ‘One Hit Wonders’ Playlist and The ‘Down In New Orleans’ EP Later, Monday, September 5, 2022

It’s officially Labor Day today and we’d like to take the time to thank the labor movement, the people who brought you the weekend. We begin a brand new week with a new sixties-focused playlist called ‘One-Hit Wonders’ and take a trip to New Orleans later.

We have our ‘Down in New Orleans’ EP starting at 5:00 p.m. this afternoon!

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

12:00 p.m. One-Hit Wonders: The Sixties NEW!

One-hit wonders are wonderful things. Those who made them are never forgotten even though they may not have lasted decades like other musicians. In our sixties edition, you’ll hear The Amboy Dukes, Bobby Hebb, Desmond Dekker & The Aces, Bobbie Gentry, The Easybeats, Count Five, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Jose Feliciano, Mason Williams, Merilee Rush, Richard Harris, Thunderclap Newman, The Capitols, The Contours, The Edwin Hawkins Singers, The Standells, Tony Joe White, The Knickerbockers, The McCoys, Zager & Evans, The Youngbloods, Scott McKenzie and more!

Please visit the Playlist tab and scroll to the bottom. You’ll find a complete list of the tunes included in this playlist there.

5:00 p.m. Down in New Orleans: Various Artists

This is one great EP. It not only covers traditional New Orleans musical styles, but it highlights the rock n’ rollers who were born and raised in New Orleans. You’ll hear BeauSoleil, Clifton Chenier, Lucinda Williams, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Tony Joe White, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Irma Thomas, Allen Fontenot, Aaron Neville, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Chance Bushman, The Daywalkers, The Boogaloo Swamis, Kermit Ruffins, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Magnolia Sisters, The Meters, Queen Ida & The BonTemps, Boozoo Chavis and more!

I don’t know what it’s like where you are, but we here in the Boston area are finally getting some much-needed rain and the temp is down in the sixties, which is perfect in my mind. Great day to hunker down and hang out with some great musical artists before heading back to work tomorrow. Give it a shot.

Heading Toward The Weekend With Our ‘Down in New Orleans’ EP, ‘Live’ Dr. John Later, and Our AOW in Between, Thursday, July 28, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers. We’ve got a veritable New Orleans extravaganza going on today with our New Orleans EP and some ‘live’ music from the Nitetripper later on.

Here’s your musical line-up:

9:00 a.m. Down in New Orleans: Various Artists

We haven’t heard this one for a bit. Not only do we have authentic New Orleans music featured here, but music featured by those born and raised in Louisiana. You’ll hear music from Beau Soleil, Clifton Chenier, Lucinda Williams, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Tony Joe White, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Irma Thomas, Allen Fontenot, Aaron Neville, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Chance Bushman, The Daywalkers, The Boogaloo Swamis, Kermit Ruffins, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Magnolia Sisters, The Meters, Queen Ida & The BonTemps, Boozoo Chavis and more!

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Steady On by Shawn Colvin

This will be our next-to-last airing of this fine album before we move on. Don’t miss it. Your last chance to hear it will be sometime Saturday. On Sunday, we’ll have something brand new for you!

7:00 p.m. Dr. John Live at Ultrasonic Studios, Hempstead, New York, November 6, 1973

Some great ‘live’ music here from the Nitetripper, otherwise known as Dr. John, otherwise known as Malcom John Rebbenack, Jr. No matter what you call him, Dr. John is a Mermaid Lounge favorite here as he delivers his New Orleans brand of R & B, funk, blues and jazz.

Great day to tune us in as we focus on one of our favorite musical venues today. Some of the folks you hear today, like Chance Bushman and The Daywalkers, I learned about on a trip to New Orleans where there’s practically street music on every corner. Don’t miss it!

On Monday, We Take a Trip to New Orleans, and We’ve Got Valerie Carter’s ‘The Lost Tapes 1 & 2’ Back-to-Back Later, May 16, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’re back in retail hell for the day, but we’ve got great music on tap, including music from New Orleans and a special airing of Valerie Carter’s The Lost Tapes later.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is just one of the NOLA bands you’ll hear today!

Here’s your Moan-Day lineup:

10:00 a.m. Down in New Orleans: Various Artists

Not only will you hear authentic Cajun/Zydeco as part of this great EP today, but you’ll be treated to musical artists who were born in Louisiana. This includes BeauSoleil, Clifton Chenier, Lucinda Williams, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Tony Joe White, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Irma Thomas, Allen Fontenot, Aaron Neville, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Chance Bushman, The Daywalkers, The Boogaloo Swamis, Kermit Ruffins, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Magnolia Sisters, The Meters, Queen Ida & The BonTemps, Boozoo Chavis, and more!

7:00 p.m. Valerie Carter: The Lost Tapes, Volumes One & Two

This is a special back-to-back airing of some great “found” music from the late, great Valerie Carter. Not only was she a solo artist in her own right, but she was a highly sought-after addition to projects from artists like Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and others. I will never forget her appearance as the opening act for Ronstadt’s concert at the Orpheum in Boston, and the two of them singing on stage together. One of my fondest musical memories.

Tune us in, people. You don’t hear this shit anywhere else, and you certainly don’t hear it for free 24/7. Before, after and in between our modest programming hours, we bring you great Open Stream around the clock.

At Midweek, We Put the Music of New Orleans Front and Center with Our ‘Down In New Orleans’ EP and Dr. John In the Spotlight, January 12, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve taken our NOLA fetish out of the closet and have put it in the mainstream. It’s no longer just for airing during Mardi Gras week. (And we start a bit early today.)

Not only does New Orleans have great food, but it also has great music!

Here’s your midweek line-up:

10:00 a.m. Down in New Orleans: Various Artists NEW!

We usually dust this playlist off once a year, but that is a thing of the past. Today, we move it into the mainstream after a bit of an updating. It not only features authentic New Orleans music, but highlights the musicians who were born in Louisiana, like Lucinda Williams, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Dr. John, and Allen Toussaint. In addition to those artists, you’ll hear BeauSoleil, Clifton Chenier, The Neville Brothers, Tony Joe White, Professor Longhair, Irma Thomas (The Soul Queen of New Orleans), Allen Fontenot, Aaron Neville, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Chance Bushman, The Daywalkers, The Boogaloo Swamis, Kermit Ruffins, The Magnolia Sisters, The Meters, Queen Ida & The Bon Temps, Boozoo Chavis, and many more. Chance Bushman and The Daywalkers are local NOLA artists whose music I had the pleasure of hearing during a 2014 trip. The Boogaloo Swamis, oddly enough, were a band we fell in love with here in Boston at a local place called Johnny D’s in Somerville, Massachusetts. We hope you enjoy this extended playlist.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Dr. John

We thought we’d make all of the programming a celebration of New Orleans today, and we could think of nobody more deserving of the Spotlight than Dr. John, also known as The Nitetripper. Dr. John was a New Orleans legend whose career spanned decades. He was musically active from the 1950’s up until his death in 2019. His musical style combined New Orleans blues, jazz, funk and R & B.

Before, in between and after our programming, you’ll be treated to our wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid. We stream 24/7 at no charge to you whatsoever. We run no commercial advertising, and we do not ask for either a credit card or your personal information. We’re all about the music.
